Renal cadmium and zinc concentrations in horses in Norway. Much of the recent interest in cadmium has been inspired by concern about the increasing levels of this element in the environment. Exposure to low levels of cadmium may cause chronic effects. The intake of cadmium takes place mostly via foods. Therefore it is of interest to determine the cadmium levels in domestic animals in order to evaluate possible hazards both to animals and man.
Salmonella infection in horses in England and Wales, 1973 to 1979. During the period 1973 to 1979 the number of recorded incidents of equine salmonellosis increased from 23 in 1973 to a peak of 111 incidents in 1976, but has since decreased to 32 in 1979. Of the 416 incidents recorded during the period of the survey 292 were caused by Salmonella typhimurium and 121 by 33 different serotypes; in three instances rough strains of salmonella were involved. Isolation and identification of African horsesickness virus from naturally infected dogs in Upper Egypt. African horsesickness virus was isolated from blood samples of street dogs in Aswan Province in Arab Republic of Egypt. Of six isolated "dog strain" African horsesickness viruses, three viruses designated D2, D6 and D10 have been identified as type 9 African horsesickness virus. Methods of isolation, tissue culture adaptation, serological indentification and typing are described. [Study of combined foci of mosquito-transmitted arbovirus infections]. A total of 5227 serum specimens from humans, horses and swine collected in the seasons of 1968--1976 in 15 administrative areas of the Primorskiy Kray were examined with antigens of a number of mosquito-borne arboviruses: Japanese encephalitis (JE), West Nile (WN), Getah, and Sindbis. A wire reclamation incinerator as a source of environmental contamination with tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins and tetrachlorodibenzofurans. The authors investigated an outbreaks of unusual illnesses in humans and horses residing within 1.3 km of a wire reclamation incinerator. The study included site visits; medical and veterinary examinations; analyses of furnace ash, fly ash, soil, and biologic samples for air residues. Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (TCDDs) and tetrachlorodibenzofurans (TCDFs) were discovered in furnace ash, fly ash, soil, horse fat, and horse liver samples.

Intestinal threshold of an enzootic strain of Venezuelan encephalitis virus in Culex (Melanoconion) taeniopus mosquitoes and its implications to vector competency and vertebrate amplifying hosts. The minimal intestinal dose of an enzootic strain of Venezuelan encephalitis (VE) virus for Culex (Melanoconion) taeniopus mosquitoes caught at a marsh habitat of VE virus in Guatemala was less than five plaque forming units (pfu) of virus. Ingestion of this dose of virus in blood of viremic hamsters resulted in transmission of virus to other hamsters. Between 1944 and 1977, the distribution of confirmed cases of rabies in farm livestock in Nigeria were 15 in cattle, 8 in goats, 4 each in sheep, pigs and horses and two in donkeys respectively. The less-cared-for pastoralist sheep - dogs as well as stray dogs have so far been the sole propagating animal species of rabies to farm livestock although wild fauna have been suspected. Isolation of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella krefeld from clinical veterinary materials. Six isolations of Salmonella krefeld were made from clinical veterinary specimens. These isolates were multiply resistant to several antimicrobial agents commonly used to treat salmonellosis.
