Topic:Stallion

Stallions are adult male horses that have not been gelded and are often used for breeding purposes. They exhibit distinct behavioral and physiological characteristics compared to mares and geldings. Stallions are known for their strong musculature, prominent neck, and often more pronounced mane and tail. Their behavior can be more aggressive and territorial, especially during the breeding season, as they naturally compete for mating opportunities. This topic explores the anatomy, behavior, and management practices specific to stallions, as well as their role in equine reproduction. The page provides access to peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that investigate various aspects of stallion health, fertility, and behavior, contributing to the understanding and management of these horses in equine science.
[Experiences with spermatic cord ligation as a method of castration in the stallion. The surgical castration of the testicle in situ appears to be of value].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    August 13, 1998   Volume 123, Issue 14-15 432-434
Wiemer P.In 22 stallions the surgically prepared spermatic cord was crushed and ligated. Preoperative and postoperative plasma-testosterone concentrations were measured and 60 days after surgery a HCG-stimulation test was carried out in 12 horses. In these 12 horses the testosterone production had ceased. In all 22 horses the wounds healed by primary intention. Ligation of the spermatic cord is a castration technique without surgical complications, at least in this study.
A comparative study of mast cells and eosinophil leukocytes in the mammalian testis.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    August 11, 1998   Volume 45, Issue 4 209-218 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1998.tb00819.x
Anton F, Morales C, Aguilar R, Bellido C, Aguilar E, Gaytán F.The existence of a physiological integration between the immune and endocrine systems has long been recognized. In spite of the abundant literature data on the presence of cells of the immune system in the testis, mast cells and eosinophil leukocytes have received little attention. We have studied the presence, distribution and numbers of mast cells and eosinophils in the testes of 12 mammalian species. Mast cells were frequently found in equine (stallion, ass and mule) and human testis, whereas eosinophils were nearly absent. On the contrary, eosinophils were abundant in the hare testis, whil...
Prostasome-like particles in stallion semen.
Biology of reproduction    August 1, 1998   Volume 59, Issue 2 309-313 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod59.2.309
Arienti G, Carlini E, De Cosmo AM, Di Profio P, Palmerini CA.Human semen contains membranous vesicles called prostasomes. They are secreted by the prostate gland and contain large amounts of cholesterol, sphingomyelin, and Ca2+. Prostasomes enhance the motility of ejaculated spermatozoa and are involved in a number of additional biological functions. No prostasome-like vesicles have been described in horse semen up to now. We have demonstrated the presence of prostasome-like vesicles in the equine semen and characterized them as to size, morphology, and lipid composition; we have found that they are similar to human prostasomes in many respects. We prop...
Fertility of Shetland pony stallions used in different breeding systems: a retrospective study.
The veterinary quarterly    July 31, 1998   Volume 20, Issue 3 100-103 doi: 10.1080/01652176.1998.9694849
van Buiten A, Remmen JL, Colenbrander B.In horses reproductive performance is usually expressed as the foaling rate. This rate ranges from 40% to 80%. Three major factors contribute to this variation namely, the stallion, the mare and management. In this study, the performance of Shetland ponies kept in three different breeding systems was investigated retrospectively. In one breeding system, the stud farmer travelled with his stallion (n = 9) to the mare (system 1) while in another system, the stallion (n = 3) stayed at the stud farm and the mares came to the stallion (system 2). The last system was pasture breeding (system 3; n = ...
Progesterone in mare follicular fluid induces the acrosome reaction in stallion spermatozoa and enhances in vitro binding to the zona pellucida.
International journal of andrology    July 24, 1998   Volume 21, Issue 2 57-66 doi: 10.1046/j.1365-2605.1998.00096.x
Cheng FP, Fazeli AR, Voorhout WF, Tremoleda JL, Bevers MM, Colenbrander B.The aim of this study was to investigate whether mare follicular fluid (FF) induces the acrosome reaction (AR) in stallion spermatozoa and, if so, to identify the component in FF responsible for it. Furthermore, the effect of this component on sperm-zona binding and the subsequent AR was studied. Pooled FF, aspirated from the preovulatory follicles of mares in oestrous, was used and aliquots of the fluid were treated with charcoal to remove steroids (CFF). Charcoal treatment reduced the progesterone concentration in FF from 153 to < 2 ng/mL. Spermatozoa from fertile stallions collected by a...
Testicular inhibin in the stallion: cellular source and seasonal changes in its secretion.
Biology of reproduction    July 23, 1998   Volume 59, Issue 1 62-68 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod59.1.62
Nagata S, Tsunoda N, Nagamine N, Tanaka Y, Taniyama H, Nambo Y, Watanabe G, Taya K.The cellular localization of inhibin alpha, betaA, and betaB subunits, 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3beta-HSD), and cytochrome P450 aromatase (aromatase) in stallion testes was investigated. In addition, detailed seasonal changes in circulating immunoreactive (ir)-inhibin were investigated in correlation with testosterone, estradiol, LH, and FSH. Inhibin alpha subunit-positive staining was observed in Sertoli cells, and more clearly positive staining was noted in Leydig cells. Inhibin betaA and betaB subunits were also stained in both types of cells. Immunoreactivity of 3beta-HSD and ar...

The concordance between the assays was 95.7%. Application of a cutoff based on a calculated percent inhibition of 20% inhibition was used. Approximately one-third of all the horses tested were found serologically positive to B. equi, with more horses testing positive from northern Israel. Among horses raised with access to pasture there was a significant difference in the percentage of seropositive reactors (76.6% in the north ...
Relationship between plasma testosterone concentrations and age, breeding season and harem size in Misaki feral horses.
The Journal of veterinary medical science    June 24, 1998   Volume 60, Issue 5 643-645 doi: 10.1292/jvms.60.643
Khalil AM, Murakami N, Kaseda Y.Jugular vein blood samples were collected from 23 young and sexual mature feral stallions to examine the relationship between plasma testosterone concentration and age, breeding season or harem size. Testosterone concentration increased with the age of the stallions until they formed their own harems, at about 4 to 6 years old. Seasonal variations in testosterone concentrations were observed, and found to be significantly higher (P<0.001) throughout the breeding season than non-breeding season, from 3 years of age. Testosterone levels were correlated with harem size for individual stallions...

Cytoplasmic extrusion and the switch from creatine kinase B to M isoform are completed by the commencement of epididymal transport in human and stallion spermatozoa.
Journal of andrology    April 16, 1998   Volume 19, Issue 1 11-20
Huszar G, Patrizio P, Vigue L, Willets M, Wilker C, Adhoot D, Johnson L.Although in several species there is a relationship between epididymal sperm transport and fertility, in human in vitro fertilization (IVF), spermatozoa recovered from the caput epididymidis or even the rete testis are fertile. We studied two objective markers of sperm maturity in the sperm of men and stallions: creatine kinase (CK) concentrations, which are a measure of cytoplasmic retention in immature spermatozoa, and the ratio of CK-M and CK-B isoforms (% CK-M/[CK-M + CK-B]), which is proportional to the incidence of mature sperm. The CK markers and the fertilizing function are closely rel...
Gonadal and pituitary responsiveness of stallions is not down-regulated by prolonged pulsatile administration of GnRH.
Journal of andrology    April 16, 1998   Volume 19, Issue 1 100-109
Brinsko SP, Squires EL, Pickett BW, Nett TM.The objective of this study was to determine if prolonged pulsatile administration of homologous gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) at therapeutic or 5x therapeutic doses would cause down-regulation of the stallion's hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis. Fifteen stallions were randomly assigned to three treatment groups (n=5/group) and received a 0.5 ml subcutaneous dose of saline (group 1), 50 microg GnRH (group 2), or 250 microg GnRH (group 3) every 2 hours for 75 days. Weekly evaluations of follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and testosterone and monthly evaluations of d...

Equine veterinary journal    April 16, 1998   Volume 30, Issue 2 98-103 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1998.tb04467.x
Nagata S, Miyake YI, Nambo Y, Nagamine N, Watanabe G, Tsunoda N, Taniyama H, Hondo E, Yamada J, Taya K.To examine the physiological role of inhibin in the stallion, a heterologous radioimmunoassay (RIA) based on a bovine RIA was validated and used to measure immunoreactive (ir)-inhibin concentrations in plasma and testicular homogenates. The bioactivity of equine testicular inhibin was also examined using an assay for suppression of FSH secretion from rat anterior pituitary cells. In addition, to identify the cell responsible for secreting testicular inhibin, the localisation of inhibin in the testis was investigated by an immunohistochemical method using a polyclonal antibody against (Tyr30)-p...
[Clinical aspects of fertility in stallions].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    April 16, 1998   Volume 123, Issue 6 184-186
Parlevliet JM.The studies described in this thesis investigated the factors that can affect the fertility of stallions. The introduction describes the male gamete and the processes that occur during maturation of sperm and fertilization. Methods to evaluate the quality of sperm and ova are then discussed. Fertility can be expressed in various ways and is also affected by many factors such as the stallion, the mare and management factors. The fertility of stallions is usually assessed a good year after they have served mares, because then the number of foals is known. However, it would be preferable to be ab...
Behavioural changes in stabled horses given nontherapeutic levels of virginiamycin.
Equine veterinary journal    April 16, 1998   Volume 30, Issue 2 139-143 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1998.tb04473.x
Johnson KG, Tyrrell J, Rowe JB, Pethick DW.Abnormal behaviour commonly develops in intensively managed horses. A possible cause is the change in diet occurring when the horse is stabled. An experiment was performed to examine this possibility by manipulating the diet with the feed supplement virginiamycin, as Founderguard. During 4 weeks, 18 horses were fed diets ranging from hay alone to concentrate plus hay in the ratio of 3:1. The rations of half the horses given concentrate were supplemented with Founderguard. Horses eating high concentrate rations displayed abnormal oral behaviours at a higher frequency than those eating only hay....

[Separation techniques ro achieve vital and reproduction competent equine spermatozoa populations–a survey].
DTW. Deutsche tierarztliche Wochenschrift    August 1, 1997   Volume 104, Issue 8 298-302
Sieme H, Klug E, Bader H.Equine ejaculates are significantly characterized by widely varying parameters especially in those of practical relevance for equine Al. Therefore it is of interest for practical purposes to get subpopulations of concentrated, vital, and competent spermatozoa from the origin ejaculates. Special preparation of the donor stallions will stabilize sperm output. Fractionated semen collection from stallions supplies sperm enriched seminal fractions very useful to work with further in semen preservation. Most important to achieve a concentrated sperm subpopulation are semen manipulations post ejacula...
