Arthrodesis of the scapulohumeral joint in a miniature horse. Scapulohumeral arthrodesis was performed successfully as treatment for severe degenerative arthritis in a 62-kg miniature horse. Using an approach similar to that used for a dog, this horse's scapulohumeral joint was opened, the cartilage was removed, and the site was stabilized, using an 11-hole narrow dynamic compression plate. Fusion was uncomplicated. The stallion became a successful pasture-breeding animal.
Preputial hematoma in a stallion. An 8-year-old Quarter Horse stallion was admitted with a swelling involving the prepuce, dorsal part of the scrotum, and root of the penis. The swelling was first noticed 10 days after breeding, with no evidence that it had resulted from a kick by the mare. Ecology of Rhodococcus equi in horses and their environment on horse-breeding farms. Clinical cases of equine arteritis virus infection have not been diagnosed in Kentucky since 1984, and there has been no indication that any of the horses involved in the 1984 epizootic have since been responsible for spread of the disease to horses in other states or other countries. Isolation and characterization of two protamines St1 and St2 from stallion spermatozoa, and amino-acid sequence of the major protamine St1. Two protamines, St1 and St2, were isolated from stallion sperm nuclei, where they represent about 75 and 25%, respectively, of the total basic protein complement. The primary structure of protamine St1 (49 residues; Mr approximately equal to 6600) has been determined. Surgical treatment of priapism in a stallion. Priapism occurred in a stallion after the administration of acetylpromazine. When conservative measures failed, the corpus cavernosum penis (CCP) was drained and irrigated, and a vascular shunt between the erectile bodies was created. Subsidence of erection resulted, but subsequently, the stallion was unable to retract or erect the penis. The stallion was castrated and the penis was surgically retracted into the sheath.
Plasma antithrombin-III values in healthy horses: effect of sex and/or breed. Plasma antithrombin-III (AT-III) values were determined in 74 healthy horses by an automated spectrophotometric assay. The mean plasma AT-III value was 218% +/- 18% of normal human plasma. Equine testicular interstitial cell tumors. Interstitial cell tumors from nine stallions were described. In all but one horse the tumors were found in undescended testes. Five animals had bilateral tumors. Two animals showed increased aggression. Tumors contained two cell types. The first type were large distinctly bordered eosinophilic cells interpreted to be hyperplastic and hypertrophic interstitial cells. Aromatization of 19-norandrogens by equine testicular microsomes. In the stallion testis, aromatase activity was localized in the microsomal fraction. Androgen aromatization occurred through the loss of 1 beta,2 beta hydrogen atoms and appeared to involve free sulfhydryl groups. A single enzyme system seemed to aromatize androgen and norandrogen at the same rate while having a much lower affinity for norandrogens.

Acquired incarcerated inguinal hernia: a review of 13 horses. The case records of 13 horses with acquired incarcerated inguinal hernia in January-August 1983, were reviewed. Midline scrotal ablation technique for unilateral cryptorchid castration in horses. Thirty-nine unilateral cryptorchid horses were castrated, using a midline scrotal ablation technique. This approach was satisfactory to access both inguinal rings, to eliminate the need for 2 incisions, and to allow for completion of the surgery by primary closure. Effects of stallion seminal plasma on hydrogen peroxide release by leukocytes exposed to spermatozoa and bacteria. The ability of stallion seminal plasma to modify phagocytosis of spermatozoa and Streptococcus zooepidemicus was examined. Phagocytosis was monitored indirectly as the H2O2 produced by peripheral blood leukocytes after addition of spermatozoa or bacteria. Hydrogen peroxide production after addition of ejaculated spermatozoa was greater (P less than 0.01) than after addition of epididymal sperm. In-vitro biosynthesis of C18 neutral steroids in horse testes. Deuterium, 14C- and 3H-labelled steroid substrates were incubated with minced testicular tissue from stallions of different ages. After extraction and separation of the neutral and phenolic fractions the metabolites were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The presence of the expected C19 neutral and C18 phenolic steroids was confirmed. An isomer of 5(10)-oestrene-3,17-diol was also identified.
Practicalities of insemination of mares with deep-frozen semen. From 341 stallions examined for sperm quality, 61% of warm-blooded stallions and 47% of cold-blooded stallions fulfilled the pre-existing criteria for their occasional use in insemination. From these stallions 51-71% of acceptable ejaculates were obtained. Altogether 959 mares were inseminated in an average of 1.36 oestrous cycles. Pharmacological manipulation of sexual behaviour in stallions. Series of experiments and clinical trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of psychoneurotropic agents on sexual behaviour of stallions. The benzodiazepine derivative, diazepam (Valium), effectively reversed experimentally suppressed precopulatory arousal and response. Diazepam treatment also blocked the negative effect of novel environment on sexual response. The dibenzazepines imipramine and clomipramine induced erection, masturbation, and ejaculation in the absence of a sexual stimulus.
The carrier state in equine arteritis virus infection in the stallion with specific emphasis on the venereal mode of virus transmission. The carrier state has been confirmed virologically in Thoroughbred and non-Thoroughbred stallions naturally infected with equine arteritis virus (EAV). Short-term or convalescent and long-term carriers occur. The frequency rate of the long-term carrier state in Thoroughbreds was high, averaging 33.9% among the three groups of stallions under study.
