Topic:Ultrasonography

Ultrasonography is a diagnostic imaging technique utilized in equine medicine to visualize internal structures of the horse's body. This non-invasive method employs high-frequency sound waves to produce images of organs, tissues, and other anatomical features. It is commonly used to assess musculoskeletal conditions, abdominal organs, reproductive health, and cardiovascular structures in horses. Ultrasonography provides real-time imaging, allowing for detailed examination and evaluation of various physiological and pathological conditions. This page gathers peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the application, methodology, and advancements in ultrasonography for equine health assessment.
Survival of equine embryos transferred to normal and subfertile mares.
Theriogenology    August 1, 1987   Volume 28, Issue 2 167-174 doi: 10.1016/0093-691x(87)90264-0
Ball BA, Hillman RB, Woods GL.To test the hypothesis that an abnormal uterine environment was a cause of early embryonic loss in subfertile mares, morphologically normal embryos were transferred to normal mares (n = 20) and subfertile mares (n = 20), and embryo survival rates were compared. Embryos were recovered nonsurgically at Days 7 to 8 postovulation and transferred surgically to normal and subfertile mares that had ovulated on the same day or within 2 d after a donor. Survival of transferred embryos was monitored by ultrasonography of the recipient mare's uterus from Day 9 through Day 28 postovulation. There were no ...
Ultrasonography as an adjunct to pregnancy assessments in the mare.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    February 1, 1984   Volume 184, Issue 3 328-334
Pipers FS, Zent W, Holder R, Asbury A.Ultrasonographic detection of pregnancy was performed in 952 Thoroughbred mares. Characteristic images were obtained between 12 and 55 days after breeding. Twins in the same uterine horn as well as twins in opposite horns were imaged, and for the first few months of gestation appeared similar to single pregnancies. Growth curves as a function of time were developed, utilizing horizontal diameters of the blastocysts versus breeding dates. Comparisons between horizontal and vertical diameters demonstrated no appreciable differences when observed as a group. Growth curves derived from twins did n...
Cholelithiasis in four horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    July 1, 1982   Volume 181, Issue 1 59-62
Traub JL, Rantanen N, Reed S, Schecter L.Four cases of cholelithiasis in horses were reviewed. Two horses were examined because of recurrent abdominal pain. Clinical laboratory data, results of physical examination, and history indicated biliary obstruction. In 1 case, B-mode ultrasonography aided in the diagnosis, which was confirmed at necropsy. In 2 horses, the biliary calculi were incidental necropsy findings.
Ultrasonic echography in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1982   Volume 32 423-430
Chevalier F, Palmer E.Ultrasonic echography in the mare allows pregnancy diagnosis as early as Day 14 after ovulation. In the 1980 and 1981 breeding seasons, a total of 7438 examinations of 4688 mares were performed on several farms with the same apparatus. The accuracy of positive pregnancy diagnosis was estimated to be greater than 95% and of non-pregnancy diagnosis greater than 84%. When abnormal pictures of vesicles are found, it has to be decided whether it is a conceptus or a cystic structure. Most small vesicles do not develop, whereas large ones, deformed shapes, presence of some echoes, or a division insid...
