Major progress on the endocrinology of the pregnant mare has been possible thanks to the catheterised equine fetal preparation developed by Marian Silver. Prevalence of the virulence-associated gene of Rhodococcus equi in isolates from infected foals. The prevalence of the plasmid-encoded virulence-associated gene (vapA) of Rhodococcus equi, as determined by PCR, was found to be 98% in isolates from 154 foals with pneumonia, confirming the strong association of vapA with virulence. The vapA genes from 60 representative isolates were compared by digestion with the restriction endonuclease HinfI, and no evidence of sequence variation was detected.

Controlled dose confirmation study of a 2% moxidectin equine gel against equine internal parasites in The Netherlands. The efficacy of a 2% moxidectin equine gel at a dosage rate of 0.4 mg kg-1 was evaluated in a controlled trial at Utrecht University. Twelve yearling castrated male Shetland ponies grazed a pasture of 2 ha from May 1994 until housing in November. Pharmacokinetic study of dipyrone metabolite 4-MAA in the horse and possible implications for doping control. The pharmacokinetic behaviour of dipyrone metabolite 4-MAA in serum was determined in seven horses of different breeds after a single intravenous dose administration. A biexponential formula was fitted to the serum concentration vs. time data. Plasma alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, and lipid levels in semi-free-ranging Przewalski horses (Equus przewalskii). Circulating concentrations of alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, and lipids were quantified in 19 Przewalski horses (Equus przewalskii) inhabiting the steppes of Ukraine during June 1991. Characterization and mutational studies of equine infectious anemia virus dUTPase. The macrophage tropic lentivirus, equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV), encodes a dUTPase in the pol gene that is required for efficient replication in macrophages. Two naturally occurring variants of the enzyme were expressed as recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli; metal chelate affinity chromatography was used to purify histidine-tagged recombinant enzymes to greater than 80% homogeneity in a single chromatographic step. [The incidence of multiple ovulations in Dutch warmblood mares]. In the period 1994-1996 1030 oestruses of Dutch Warmblood mares were evaluated on the incidence of multiple ovulations diagnosed by rectal palpation. Ultrasonography was not used. All follicles > 25 mm were noted. The examination was repeated every 48 hours. The incidence of multiple follicle development was 7.3%. In a group of 50 ultrasonographically diagnosed twin-pregnant mares only 14 (28%) had been detected by rectal palpation as a multiple ovulation.
