Clostridium botulinum type-C intoxication associated with consumption of processed alfalfa hay cubes in horses. An episode of nervous system dysfunction was observed in horses on 17 premises in 4 counties of southern California. Thirty-eight horses were affected, and 31 of those died. Persistent thrombocytopenia in a case of equine infectious anemia. Persistent thrombocytopenia was detected in a horse with equine infectious anemia (EIA). The thrombocytopenia was considered to be immune-mediated, developing secondary to infection with EIA virus. Epistaxis, petechial hemorrhages, subcutaneous hematomas, and edema resolved after treatment with corticosteroids; however, the owners requested that the mare by euthanatized because of infection with EIA virus. Serum levels of type III procollagen peptide in Equidae before and after intestinal ischemia. Serum levels of type III procollagen peptide (P-III-P) were measured by radioimmunoassay in clinically normal adult ponies (n = 15) and horses (n = 10). Chondrocytes subjected to adverse culture conditions in vitro are stimulated to produce the eicosanoid prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and the neutral metalloproteinase stromelysin (proteoglycanase). Use of orthopedic markers for quantitative determination of proximal radial and ulnar growth in foals. Cortical bone screws were implanted into the proximal portion of the right and left radius and ulna of 6 newborn Quarter Horse foals as radiographic markers for measurement of growth. Distance between markers on a lateral radiographic view was measured. Leiomyoma of the small colon in a horse. A leiomyoma of the small colon was discovered incidentally in a 4-year-old Thoroughbred gelding during colic surgery to correct large colon displacement. The mass and 20 cm of small colon were resected, and an end-to-end anastomosis was performed. A postoperative fecal impaction proximal to the anastomosis responded after 5 days to administration of intravenous fluids, analgesics, and stool softeners.
Renal tubular function in horses during submaximal exercise. Exercise-induced changes in renal function were examined during steady-state submaximal treadmill exercise in six unfit mares. Horses were randomly assigned to either an exercise or parallel control (no exercise) trial on day 1 and the alternate trial 1 wk later. [The postnatal iron status of trotter foals]. The postnatal iron status of 20 trotter foals (7 female, 13 male) was studied by analyzing different parameters in blood drawn on the day of birth, and 14 +/- 2 and 28 +/- 2 days later. Hemoglobin hematocrit, plasma iron and transferrin saturation averaged 14.9 g/dl, 41.8%, 300 micrograms/dl and 59.4%, respectively, on the day of birth. To evaluate the effect of age and season on Sertoli cell number per paired testes, ratio of germ cells per Sertoli cell, and daily sperm production, testes were obtained from 184 adult (4-20 yr) stallions at slaughter throughout one year. Congenital and acquired melanocytomas (benign melanomas) in eighteen young horses. In a retrospective study, cutaneous melanocytic tumors from 18 horses, less than 2 years old, were examined histopathologically and clinical follow-up requested. Surgical repair of an intrathoracic esophageal pulsion diverticulum in a horse. An intrathoracic esophageal pulsion diverticulum causing repeated episodes of esophageal obstruction in a Morgan weanling colt was diagnosed by endoscopy, positive contrast radiography, and pleuroscopy. Surgical excision of the diverticulum alleviated clinical signs, and the horse was able to resume a normal diet by day 6. After 9 months the colt remains asymptomatic.

Streptokinases produced by pathogenic group C streptococci demonstrate species-specific plasminogen activation. The species specificities of plasminogen activation and binding of plasmin by pathogenic group C streptococci isolated from humans, horses, and pigs were examined. Of 56 streptococcal isolates, 52 elaborated plasminogen activator activity and 49 of these had specificity for plasminogen of the homologous host. Analysis of supernatants from 13 isolates indicated that the plasminogen activator activity resulted from secreted streptokinases. Analysis of post-partum fertility in mares on a thoroughbred stud in southern Victoria. This project surveys the reproductive performance of 154 foaling Thoroughbred mares on a commercial stud in southern Victoria. Of these, 96 were served on foal heat (FHS) and 58 were served at a subsequent prostaglandin-induced oestrus (PGS). The PGS group of mares performed more favourably in all aspects except the foaling-to-conception interval where there was a 9.4 day advantage to the FHS group. A preliminary study of the tolerance of healthy foals to a low residue enteral feeding solution. After a three day acclimatization period, six healthy, young (aged 4 to 20 days) orphan foals of mixed breeding were fed 100 per cent of their caloric needs (estimated at 523 kjoules/kg bodyweight [bwt] or 125 kcal/kg bwt/day) as a low residue isotonic feeding solution (LRF) for seven days. Detection of reserpine in horses by high-performance liquid chromatography. A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) assay was developed for the detection of reserpine. The assay was used to monitor the plasma concentrations of the drug given intramuscularly on one or two occasions to five horses. The blood concentrations of reserpine varied quite considerably between horses given the same dose of the drug. A novel group A rotavirus G serotype: serological and genomic characterization of equine isolate FI23. Equine rotavirus FI23 was shown to be prototypic of a novel G serotype, provisionally G14, by cross-neutralization and VP7 sequence determination. Studies of meclofenamic acid and two metabolites in horses–pharmacokinetics and effects on exercise tolerance. The pharmacokinetics and the effects on treadmill exercise of the anti-inflammatory drug meclofenamic acid were studied in seven Standardbred horses after single intravenous and/or oral doses.
