Multivariable prediction model for the need for surgery in horses with colic. A survey of 1,965 equine colic cases was conducted from August 1985 to July 1986 at 10 equine referral centers located throughout the United States. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a multivariable model for the need for surgery. Structure of equine corticotropin releasing factor. A 41 amino acid peptide, probably identical in structure to human corticotropin releasing factor, was isolated from 70 equine hypothalami by methanol extraction, immunoaffinity chromatography and single step of reverse phase HPLC. The amino acid sequence was determined by gas phase sequence analysis. Expression of procoagulant activity by equine lung macrophages: stimulation by blood lymphocytes. Increases in procoagulant activities (PCA) in equine lung macrophages were induced by non-adherent blood lymphocytes which were prestimulated with phytohaemagglutinin for 48 to 72 hours or by supernatants harvested from prestimulated blood lymphocyte cultures. Ultrasonic determination of fetal gender in horses and cattle under farm conditions. Accuracy of transrectal ultrasonic diagnosis of fetal gender by identifying and locating the genital tubercle was assessed in 85 horses and 102 dairy heifers and cows. Examinations were made once (horses and cattle) under farm conditions (cattle) on approximately Days 50 to 100. The analgesic and spasmolytic effects of dipyrone (Novalgin) (2500 mg/100 kg bodyweight) hyoscine-N-butylbromide (Buscopan) (20 mg/100 kg bodyweight) and a combination of both drugs were evaluated in a balloon-induced model of colic, using five ponies with caecal fistulae. Tarsocrural joint luxation in a horse. A 14-year-old Quarter Horse x Thoroughbred gelding was admitted to the teaching hospital because of inability to bear weight on its right hind limb, associated with a severe deviation of the tarsus. The prevalence of anthelmintic resistance of horse strongyles in The Netherlands. A survey to determine the prevalence of anthelmintic resistance of horse strongyles was carried out with 616 horses on 22 farms. The tested drugs were cambendazole, pyrantel pamaote and ivermectin. Based on egg count reduction tests the efficacy of cambendazole varied from 0% to 93% and of pyrantel from 93% to 100%. Ivermectin treatments were 100% effective on all farms. Horse and marmoset monkey sperm bind to the zona pellucida of salt-stored human oocytes. The present study demonstrates that horse and marmoset monkey sperm can bind to the human zona of salt-stored oocytes that failed to fertilize in vitro. Marmoset monkey sperm are also able to penetrate the salt-stored human zona. In contrast, human sperm do not bind to the zona of either horse or marmoset monkey oocytes. These results suggest that human sperm binding to the zona pellucida is more strictly species-specific than it is for horse and marmoset monkey sperm. Positive end-expiratory pressure during colic surgery in horses: 74 cases (1986-1988). Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) was applied in 74 anesthetized, ventilated horses during colic surgery, to attempt to increase arterial oxygen tensions. In 28 horses with an initial PaO2 less than 70 mm of Hg, PEEP increased PaO2 values to a mean of 173 +/- 24 mm of Hg. Participation of H1-receptors in histamine-induced contraction and relaxation of horse coronary artery in vitro. The mechanisms of histamine-induced contraction and relaxation were investigated in rings isolated from a middle part of the left descending coronary arteries of horses. Intact and endothelium-denuded preparations were compared. Rings of horse coronary arteries contracted in response to histamine in a concentration dependent manner, but some of them relaxed with lower concentrations and contracted with higher concentrations. Relationships between lymphoid nodules and lymph sinuses in lymph nodes: a study in horses. Secondary lymphoid nodules in lymph nodes of the horse are surrounded by a network of lymph sinuses, including the subcapsular sinus and its extensions around tabeculae, tubular and tubule-like sinuses deeper in the cortex, and sinuses between cord-like projections of cortical tissue. The precise role of this close association between sinuses and nodules in the transport of immune complexes, cells and cytokines is not known.
Chronic cervical compressive myelopathy in horses: clinical correlations with spinal cord alterations. Histological examination was performed on the cervical spinal cord from 13 horses with chronic cervical compressive myelopathy of 4 to 29 months duration.
