[Incarcerated scrotal hernia in a gelding (author’s transl)].
The clinical examination, anaesthesia and surgery in a gelding with an incarcerated scrotal hernia are described. The results of examination of the blood at regular intervals are shown in a table. Surgery was performed without enterectomy. The postoperation course was uneventful. It is concluded that the possibility of scrotal hernia should be borne in mind, even in geldings with colic. The incarcerated portion of the small intestine is usually found to be the jejuno-ileal junction. The anaesthesiological and surgical features of equine scrotal hernia are discussed.
Purification by affinity chromatography and characterization of a neutral alpha-glucosidase from horse kidney.
A horse kidney neutral alpha-D-glucosidase (alpha-D-glucoside glucohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.20) was purified about 580-fold with a yield of 33% by an affinity chromatography technique using the p-aminophenyl-beta-D-maltoside, a substrate derivative, as ligand. The purified enzyme, homogeneous in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, was a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 280 000 as calculated by gel filtration and its isoelectric focusing points was found to be pH 4.1. An assessment of filamentous carbon fibre for the treatment of tendon injury in the horse.
The results of an assessment of carbon fibre for biological use are given, with particular reference to the clinical use of the material in the treatment of equine tendon injury. Biocompatability of the fibres is assessed using fibroblast cell cultures and replacement of normal tendon with carbon fibre prostheses in experimental animals. The rationale and technique for using this material in clinical cases of tendon injury in the racehorse are described. Results are given from 62 implant operations in a limited series of 40 horses.
Non-surgical embryo collection in the mare and subsequent fertility of donor animals.
Observations were made on 14 mares which were non-surgically flushed on one or more occasions for recovery of embryos on Days 7-9 after ovulation. Flushing alone shortened the oestrous cycle by about 2.7 days but increased the number of mares failing to ovulate. Flushing followed by an injection of a prostaglandin analogue shortened the cycle by about 4.5 days and hence increased the frequency of ovulations. Four experiments were performed to elucidate the pathogenesis of toxicoinfectious botulism in horses and foals. Groups of horses and foals were inoculated with one of the following: (1) crude toxin of Clostridium botulinum, type B, given IV, (2) C botulinum spores, given IM, (3) C botulinum spores, given IM, in necrotic lesions, and (4) C botulinum spores, given orally with and without dexamethasone. Water hardness in relation to cadium accumulation and microscopic signs of cardiovascular disease in horses.
The hardness of drinking water (i.e., the sum of calcium and magnesium concentrations) has been related to cadmium concentration in kidney cortex and to microscopic signs of arteriosclerosis and focal myocardial fibrosis in 50 Swedish horses slaughtered for meat production. A significant negative correlation was found between water hardness and cadmium concentrations in kidney cortex. The anthelmintic activity and toxicity of 2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate (dichlorvos) in equines.
Dichlorvos in a special slow release formulation at 31 mg/kg body mass in equines was highly effective against all adult strongyles and Oxyuris equi, Parascaris equorum, Probstmayria vivipara and bots of Gasterophilus spp. It has no effect on 4th stage larvae of Trichonema ssp. nor the stomach worms Draschia megastoma and Habronema spp. Doses of dichlorovos 10 and 20 times the therapeutic dose (310 and 620 mg/kg body mass) caused transient clinical signs but these disappeared 96 hours after dosing.

Mycoplasmas were isolated from 11 (=#6,8%) of 161 cervix swabs from infertile mares. A total of 17 strains was isolated and characterized by indirect immunofluorescent test and metabolic inhibition test as Mycoplasma equigenitalium (11 strains), Mycoplasma subdolum (2 strains), Acholeplasma laidlawii (3 strains) and Acholeplasma equifetale (1 strain). Effect of dehydrocholic, chenodeoxycholic, and taurocholic acids on the excretion of bilirubin.
The effects of IV bile acid infusion (at approx 20% of normal excretion rate) on the biliary excretion of 3-alpha-hydroxy bile acids and bilirubin were investigated in ponies prepared surgically with chronic external biliary fistulas. Endogenous bile acid excretion (approx 45 mumol/min) decreased to the hepatic synthesis rate (approx 1.5 mumol/min) during the initial 4 to 5 hours of bile drainage. Urinary excretion of arsenic from horses injected with an organic arsenical compound.
Five doses of sodium cacodylate (194 mg) were administered intravenously to two horses at two-day intervals. The arsenic content of daily urine samples was determined for five days after the final dose, by which time urinary arsenic concentrations were close to those of control samples. It was considered that these results reflected a common property of organic arsenicals viz. more rapid excretion by mammals than is the case with inorganic arsenic compounds.

The pharmacokinetics of gentamicin were studied in six healthy mature horses of mixed breeding and of both sexes. A parenteral preparation of gentamicin sulfate (5% aqueous solution) was administered rapidly (IV) at the dosage level of 5 mg/kg of body weight. Electrocardiography in the horse. (A report of findings in 138 horses).
Over a period of approx. 3 years, electrocardiograms (ECG) were recorded from 138 horses referred as patients to the Medical Clinic. Of these, 22 horses (approx. 16 per cent) has ECG alterations. The 22 ECG's revealed a total of 29 ECG abnormalities. The most frequent ECG alteration was incomplete AV block, that was seen in 9 horses (31 per cent of the ECG abnormalities). Histiolymphocytic lymphosarcoma in the subcutis of two horses.
Two aged mares with histiolymphocytic lymphosarcoma had multiple rapidly proliferating tumours in the subcutis. Consistent haematological changes were absent. One mare had lymph node involvement but no neoplastic lesions in the viscera. Microbiological examination of tumour tissue showed coryneform bacteria; there was no evidence of C-type or lytic viruses or of reverse transcriptase.
