Mid-metacarpal deep digital flexor tenotomy in the management of refractory laminitis in horses.
Veterinary surgery : VS    January 1, 1991   Volume 20, Issue 1 15-20 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1991.tb00300.x
Hunt RJ, Allen D, Baxter GM, Jackman BR, Parks AH.Deep digital flexor tendon transection at the mid-metacarpus was performed in 20 horses with severe acute or chronic laminitis that was not responsive to conventional treatment. Sixteen horses improved within 72 hours, one horse worsened, and two horses were unaffected by the surgery. Eleven horses survived less than 1 month after surgery and six horses survived longer than 6 months. Three horses surviving longer than 6 months have remained lame and no horse has returned to athletic performance. Transection of the deep digital flexor tendon at the mid-metacarpus may decrease the pain associate...
Experimental cutaneous free flap transfers in the horse.
Microsurgery    January 1, 1991   Volume 12, Issue 2 130-135 doi: 10.1002/micr.1920120214
Lees MJ, Fretz PB, Bowen CV, Leach DH.Equine limb wounds often heal slowly by epithelialization, and large scars are a frequent end result. In some ways, they resemble the wound associated with human tibial injuries. The literature indicates that previous investigators have failed to transfer free skin flaps successfully in the horse. In this paper, we review our experimental work with the deep circumflex iliac flap in the horse. Dissections of 20 cadavers confirmed the anatomical consistency of the flap. Four flaps survived well when elevated as island flaps, but five orthotopic and nine heterotopic free flap transfers all failed...
The morphology of abdominal and inguinal cryptorchid testes in stallions: a light and electron microscopic study.
International journal of fertility    January 1, 1991   Volume 36, Issue 1 57-64
al-Bagdadi F, Hoyt P, Karns P, Martin G, Memon M, McClure R, McCoy D, Shoemaker S.Eleven unilateral cryptorchid stallions, two to three years old, were castrated at Louisiana State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Five of these cryptorchid cases were abdominal and the rest were inguinal. This study was initiated to document the differences between the abdominal and inguinal equine cryptorchid testes. Specimens were obtained from the abepididymal side of each cryptorchid testes and processed for light and electron microscopic study. The cryptorchid testes were smaller than the scrotal testes, with the abdominal testes being one-fourth the size of the scrotal testes. ...
Phylogeny of immune recognition: processing and presentation of structurally defined proteins in channel catfish immune responses.
Developmental immunology    January 1, 1991   Volume 1, Issue 3 137-148 doi: 10.1155/1991/32534
Vallejo AN, Miller NW, Clem LW.This work was undertaken to investigate whether or not antigen processing and presentation are important in channel catfish in vitro secondary immune responses elicited with structurally defined proteins, namely, pigeon heart cytochrome C (pCytC), hen egg lysozyme, and horse myoglobin. The use of in vitro antigen-pulsed and fixed B cells or monocytes as antigen presenting cells (APC) resulted in autologous peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) responding with vigorous proliferation and antibody production in vitro. In addition, several long-term catfish monocyte lines have been found to function a...
Establishment of equine oviduct cell monolayers for co-culture with early equine embryos.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 393-403
Battut I, Bézard J, Palmer E.A culture for equine oviduct epithelial cells is described. Primary cultures reached confluence in 5-8 days, forming a monolayer of polygonal cells and remaining morphologically intact for about 20 days. Subcultures were obtained by collecting cells detached spontaneously from the monolayers, and confluence was reached again after 5-7 days. Cells frozen before primary culture were confluent 10-15 days after thawing. Dishes containing confluent cells also were frozen, and some cohesive monolayers formed after thawing. Equine embryos, collected 2 days after ovulation, were cultured alone or with...
Effect of oral melatonin treatment on the seasonal physiology of pony stallions.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 115-125
Argo CM, Cox JE, Gray JL.This study tested the role of melatonin in the regulation of seasonal physiological change in the pony stallion. Four 3-year-old, Welsh Mountain pony stallions were housed initially under the prevailing short-day photoperiod in December (8 of light [L]:16 h of darkness [D]) before being transferred to long days (16L:8D) on 13 January for the remaining 22 weeks of the study. On Day 76 (11 weeks later) the stallions began an 11-week period of daily melatonin treatment (20 mg orally, 8 h after lights on). Marked changes in mean plasma testosterone, beta-endorphin and cortisol concentrations occur...
Lack of expression of alpha or omega interferons by the horse conceptus.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 439-443
Baker CB, Adams MH, McDowell KJ.Horse conceptuses were collected on Days 13, 15, 20 and 25 after ovulation. Whole conceptuses (Days 13 and 15) or extra-embryonic membranes (Days 20 and 25) were homogenized and poly-adenylated RNA (poly A RNA) was isolated by binding to oligo (dT)-cellulose. Poly A RNA (1 microgram/well) was separated by size on a denaturing 1% agarose gel and blotted onto nitrocellulose filters (northern blotting). DNA probes were prepared from plasmids containing equine alpha 1, omega 1 and omega 2 interferons and human beta actin. The presence of messenger RNA (mRNA) was detected by specific hybridization ...
Changes in luteinizing hormone bioactivity associated with gonadotrophin pulses in the cycling mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 13-18
Pantke P, Hyland J, Galloway DB, MacLean AA, Hoppen HO.Equine plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) possesses both biological (in vitro bioassay, B) and immunological (radioimmunoassay, I) activities and the ratio of B:I varies with stage of the oestrous cycle. To estimate the contribution made by pituitary secretion and peripheral metabolism to changes in the B:I ratio, pituitary venous effluent and circulating plasma from 5 dioestrous and 2 oestrous mares were analyzed using both an in vitro bioassay and a radioimmunoassay. During dioestrus, LH was released in a pulsatile fashion with a frequency of 1.4 pulses/24 h and a pulse duration of 20-40 min (c...
[The estimation of platelet factor 3 activity in horses, cattle, sheep and pigs by the use of synthetic chromogenic tripeptide substrates].
Polskie archiwum weterynaryjne    January 1, 1991   Volume 31, Issue 1-2 71-82
Ledwozyw A, Kadziołka A, Jabłonka S, Tusińska E, Herbut M.The aim of this study was to investigate the platelet factor 3 activity in platelet-rich plasma of horse, cattle, sheep and pig, by the use of chromogenic tripeptide substrate H-D-Phenylalanyl-Pipecolyl-Arginyl-p-nitroanilide. Among species examined the highest activity of this factor was stated in pig, the lowest one in sheep. Chromogenic substrate test was 10 times more sensitive that Stypven clotting time test. Thus, the use of chromogenic tripeptide substrate is fully valuable in platelet factor 3 activity estimation in domestic animals.

Characterization of BPV-like DNA in equine sarcoids.
Archives of virology    January 1, 1991   Volume 119, Issue 1-2 95-109 doi: 10.1007/BF01314326
Angelos JA, Marti E, Lazary S, Carmichael LE.The DNA from equine sarcoid samples from New York State and Switzerland was isolated and probed with bovine papillomavirus type 1 (BPV-1) to determine if BPV genomes were present. Twelve of 13 sarcoids from New York State and 17/20 sarcoids from Switzerland contained DNA that hybridized to the BPV-1 probe. Restriction enzyme analysis of the positive samples demonstrated restriction fragment profiles characteristic of BPV-1 in 22 sarcoids and restriction fragment profiles characteristic of bovine papillomavirus type 2 (BPV-2) in 7 sarcoids. In addition, three tissues histologically diagnosed as...
Bleeding disorder (von Willebrand disease) in a quarter horse.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    January 1, 1991   Volume 198, Issue 1 114-116
Brooks M, Leith GS, Allen AK, Woods PR, Benson RE, Dodds WJ.Bleeding diathesis in a Quarter Horse filly was caused by von Willebrand disease. Hemorrhage occurred mainly from mucosal surfaces and after trauma. Quantitative and qualitative measurements of plasma von Willebrand factor (vWF) documented a specific deficiency of vWF high molecular weight multimers, and concurrently greater than expected deficiency of vWF activity relative to vWF concentration. These findings are characteristic of type-II von Willebrand disease in human beings. Application of vWF assays used in human and small animal medicine now permits evaluation of vWF and diagnosis of von...
Pathological changes of the mare endometrium and genotypes for transferrin and ELA.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 275-282
Weitkamp LR, Kenney RM, Bailey E, MacCluer JW, Brown JS, Blanchard TL, Sertich PL, Love CC, Hunt PR.Histological features of the endometrium, as assessed in biopsy samples, were related to Standardbred mare genotypes for transferrin, esterase (as a control) and equine leucocyte antigens (ELA). Pathological changes were found more frequently in each successively older age group of mares. Among mares aged 6-19 years, there were significant pathologic changes on first examination following an infertile breeding season for 46 of 90 (51%) of transferrin homozygotes and 50 of 146 (34%) of transferrin heterozygotes. The difference between the two groups was significant for the total data (chi 1(2) ...
Effects of intra-articular administration of methylprednisolone acetate on normal equine articular cartilage.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1991   Volume 52, Issue 1 83-87
Trotter GW, McIlwraith CW, Yovich JV, Norrdin RW, Wrigley RH, Lamar CH.The effects of the corticosteroid 6-alpha-methylprednisolone acetate on normal equine articular cartilage were evaluated, using the middle carpal joint in 4 clinically normal young horses. One middle carpal joint of each horse was injected 3 times with 100 mg of 6-alpha-methylprednisolone acetate, at 14-day intervals. The opposite middle carpal joint (control) was injected with 2.5 ml of lactated Ringer solution at the same intervals. Effects were studied until 8 weeks after the first injection. Evaluation included clinical and radiographic examination, and gross, microscopic, and biochemical ...
Variations in structural and functional changes of stallion spermatozoa in response to calcium ionophore A23187.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 199-205
Zhang JJ, Muzs LZ, Boyle MS.Three experiments were conducted to assess the structural and functional changes of stallion spermatozoa in response to the calcium ionophore A23187, and to determine individual variation between stallions. In Experiment 1, changes in the acrosome of spermatozoa exposed to 7.14 microM A23187 for fixed times between 0 and 120 min were examined. There was a steady increase with time in the number of spermatozoa undergoing the acrosome reaction although the rate of increase differed between stallions. Sperm motility decreased sharply when incubation was extended beyond 30 min. In Experiment 2, th...
Use of concanavalin A for coating the membranes of stallion spermatozoa.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 191-198
Blanc G, Magistrini M, Palmer E.Semen from three ejaculates from each of 4 stallions was frozen in liquid nitrogen. Morphology was evaluated by coating the spermatozoa with fluorescein-labelled Concanavalin A (FITC-ConA2) and motility was measured by computer-assisted image analysis. Coating was performed at each step of the freezing procedure (dilution, cooling, addition of glycerol and freeze-thawing) and observations were made after each step, to evaluate changes, or after subsequent steps, to determine protection provided by the coating method. All the parameters showed progressive changes during the freezing procedure. ...
Isolation of equine peripheral blood mononuclear cells using Percoll.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1991   Volume 50, Issue 1 116-117 doi: 10.1016/0034-5288(91)90064-u
May SA, Hooke RE, Lees P.The concentration of Percoll required for isolating equine peripheral blood mononuclear cells has been reinvestigated. A poor cell yield was obtained at the 60 per cent concentration already reported. It is recommended that workers specifically interested in high yields of mononuclear cells, for investigation of lymphocyte and monocyte functions, use a concentration of 65 per cent Percoll. However, workers wishing to isolate pure populations of equine neutrophils might consider a concentration of 70 per cent in the upper layer of Percoll used to retain the mononuclear cells.
Soft tissue- and bone-phase scintigraphy for diagnosis of navicular disease in horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    January 1, 1991   Volume 198, Issue 1 73-77
Trout DR, Hornof WJ, O'Brien TR.Radiography and soft tissue- and bone-phase scintigraphy were performed on 14 clinically normal horses and 35 horses in which definite, probable, or possible navicular disease had been diagnosed. The specificity of radiography and scintigraphy in revealing signs of navicular disease were nearly equal; however, the sensitivity of scintigraphy appeared to be greater than that of radiography. The greatest sensitivity and specificity were achieved when the results of radiography and scintigraphy were evaluated together. Differences in sensitivity were greatest when scintigraphy revealed lesions no...
Antigen recognition in feral mares previously immunized with porcine zonae pellucidae.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 321-325
Kirkpatrick JF, Liu IM, Turner JW, Bernoco M.Twenty-six free-roaming feral mares were immunized against porcine zonae pellucidae (PZP) between February and May, 1988. Eight sexually mature mares received 2 inoculations 2 weeks apart, and 18 mares received 3 inoculations at intervals of 2 and 4 weeks. Analysis of urinary oestrone conjugates (E1C) and non-specific progesterone metabolites (iPdG) in samples collected in October, 1988, revealed that none of the 18 mares that received 3 and only 1 of the 6 mares that received two inoculations were pregnant, whereas 3 of 6 sham-injected control mares and 5 of 11 untreated mares were pregnant. ...

Plasma progestagen concentrations in the normal and dysmature newborn foal.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 609-617
Houghton E, Holtan D, Grainger L, Voller BE, Rossdale PD, Ousey JC.Radioimmunoassay (RIA) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were used to determine plasma progestagen concentrations in the normal and premature foal. Radioimmunoassay provides a profile of plasma progestagens with respect to time but, due to the non-specific nature of the technique and without prior chromatographic purification, quantitative data based on RIA analysis must be interpreted with caution. In contrast, the greater specificity of GC-MS allows identification of specific plasma progestagens and measuring of multiple analytes in a single analysis. Both techniques demonstra...
Proximal suspensory desmitis: clinical, ultrasonographic and radiographic features.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1991   Volume 23, Issue 1 25-31 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1991.tb02708.x
Dyson S.Clinical, ultrasonographic and radiographic features of proximal suspensory desmitis in the forelimb and the hindlimb are described. Acute cases may present with slight, localised, oedematous swelling, heat, distension of the medial palmar (plantar) vein and/or pain, whereas chronic cases or those rested immediately after onset of lameness usually have no detectable clinical signs suggestive of the source of pain. In these cases local analgesia is required to identify pain in the proximal metacarpal (metatarsal) region. Transverse ultrasonographic images of the suspensory ligament usually yiel...
Triglyceride, insulin, and cortisol responses of ponies to fasting and dexamethasone administration.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    January 1, 1991   Volume 5, Issue 1 15-22 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.1991.tb00925.x
Freestone JF, Wolfsheimer KJ, Ford RB, Church G, Bessin R.Ponies were evaluated for their response to feed withholding and exogenous administration of corticosteroids (dexamethasone 0.04 mg/kg intramuscular [IM]) in an attempt to reproduce the hyperlipemia syndrome. Because insulin resistance has been associated with hyperlipemia, all ponies were initially evaluated for insulin response to an oral glucose load and normal dexamethasone suppression of serum cortisol. Four ponies were identified as hyperinsulinemic reflecting insulin resistance. All ponies had suppressed cortisol concentrations following dexamethasone administration. Feed withdrawal res...

Immunization of horses with Crotalus durissus terrificus (South American rattlesnake) venom. A comparison of four different procedures. Freitas TV, Fortes-Dias CL, Diniz CR, Velarde DT, Freitas CF.1. A comparative study was carried out on horses immunized with Crotalus durissus terrificus venom using four different inoculation procedures, which included the use of Freund's adjuvant, A1(OH)3 and liposomes as adjuvants. The antibody titer was assessed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the neutralizing potency by the neutralizing median effective dose (ED50). 2. The inoculation schedule used in horses to obtain antivenom serum consisted of sc injections of a 7.5 mg venom starting dose in 5.0 ml sterile saline emulsified with an equal volume of Freund's complete adjuvant. One...
Lodgement of the equine blastocyst in the uterus from fixation through endometrial cup formation.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 427-438
Enders AC, Liu IK.The equine blastocyst becomes fixed in position in the uterus on approximately Day 16 of gestation, but allantochorionic villi are not formed until about Day 50. The purpose of this study was to examine evidence that the blastocyst is orientated during this time period, and to determine what morphological features might assist retention of the position of the blastocyst within the uterus. Implantation sites were collected on Days 10-42 of gestation, and the reproductive tracts perfused with fixative for light and electron microscopic examination. The conceptus is found at the bend of a uterine...
Measurement of renin and prorenin in cattle, hog and horse.
Comparative biochemistry and physiology. A, Comparative physiology    January 1, 1991   Volume 100, Issue 1 127-131 doi: 10.1016/0300-9629(91)90193-g
Nielsen AH, Gotfredsen P, Nielsen PB, Hyttel P, Poulsen K.1. Species specific problems complicating the measurement of prorenin and renin concentrations were studied in bovine, hog and horse plasma. 2. In contrast to horse renin, bovine and hog renin reacted with rat angiotensinogen, allowing measurement of the plasma renin concentration in cattle and hog with rat angiotensinogen as exogenous substrate. 3. Trypsin treatment of plasma in order to activate prorenin generated an interfering angiotensin I immunoreactive material in all three species, most extensively in horse plasma. 4. This material could be removed in bovine and hog plasma by a cation-...
The action of low dose endotoxin on equine bowel motility.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1991   Volume 23, Issue 1 11-17 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1991.tb02705.x
King JN, Gerring EL.Post operative ileus (POI) is a common and serious complication of colic surgery in the horse. There is a high correlation between the incidence of POI and the presence of ischaemic bowel, suggesting a role for endotoxin. 0.1 micrograms/kg endotoxin was administered intravenously to six ponies with chronically implanted gastrointestinal electromechanical recording devices. It produced profound disruption of normal fasting bowel motility patterns, with an inhibition of gastric contraction amplitude and rate, left dorsal colon contraction product and small colon spike rate. In the small intestin...
Soluble oestrogen and progesterone receptors in the endometrium of the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1991   Volume 44 267-273
Tomanelli RN, Sertich PL, Watson ED.Receptors for progesterone and oestrogen were measured in cytosol extracted from the endometrium of mares. Samples of endometrium were obtained from mares during the oestrous cycle and during other physiological and pathological states, and from mares with persistent endometritis. The concentration of binding sites was high around oestrus and early in dioestrus and was low by mid- to late dioestrus. Numbers of receptors were low in mares sampled on Day 15 of pregnancy and in mares in prolonged dioestrus, whereas receptor concentrations in ovariectomized mares were high. In 2 mares with endomet...
