A review of research on equine locomotion and biomechanics. A review of the literature about equine locomotion and biomechanics is presented to summarise available knowledge and provide perspective to current and proposed research programmes. It is evident that much past research has failed to provide sufficient information on basic principles of these two disciplines and that information is now required before progress can be made on more applied research topics. However, useful contributions have been made in gait typology, analysis of racetrack surface and design and limb kinetics, kinematics and coordination.
Echocardiographic features of aortic valve endocarditis in a dog, a cow, and a horse. A horse, a cow, and a dog with aortic valve vegetative endocarditis were studied by M-mode echocardiography. Echocardiographic abnormalities of the aortic valve, mitral valve, and left ventricle were observed. These features were identical to those reported in human beings with aortic valve endocarditis. Mortality rates and associated factors in equine colic operations – a retrospective study of 341 operations. A retrospective survey of 300 surgical treatments for colic involving 341 interventions was carried out to determine mortality rates and associated factors. These horses had been referred to the Ontario Veterinary College over the period September 1974 to February 1980. Data from the case records was collected and stored on a computer and statistical analysis was carried out using X(2) tests.Fifty percent (150/300) of the horses survived to be discharged from the hospital. Microangiographic studies of metaphyseal vessels in young foals. Selective perfusion and microangiographic examination of the radius and metacarpus of 30 foals were performed. Vessels of extraosseous origin supplying the peripheral part of the metaphysis were not demonstrated in young foals, but became more obvious in older animals. The development of this vessel system coincided with the reduction of transphyseal vessels from the epiphysis crossing the growth plate.

A reagin-like antibody in horse serum. II. Anti-human IgE induced reversed cutaneous anaphylaxis-like responses in horse skin. Fc specific anti-human IgE serum induced prolonged reversed cutaneous anaphylaxis (RCA)-like reactions in horse skin. Morphologically and histologically, these reactions resembled passively induced late cutaneous anaphylaxis responses in human skin, but differed from reversed passive Arthus responses induced in horse skin using anti-horse IgG serum. The induction of RCA-like responses in horse skin by anti-human IgE indicates shared Fc antigenic determinants on human IgE and a horse homocytotropic or reagin-like antibody.
Plasma cortisol variations induced in the stallion by mating. Plasma cortisol variations have been determined by radioimmunoassay in 5 stallions during mating and in 2 teasers during oestrous female exposure. In all the animals, cortisol plasma levels consistently increase (71.1 ng/ml vs 44.0 and 63.0 ng/ml vs 35.1, in the stallions and in the teasers, respectively) 7-30 min after female exposure; 120 min after exposure, cortisol concentrations are again low.
Reliability of single-sample phosphorus fractional excretion determination as a measure of daily phosphorus renal clearance in equids. In 4 healthy horses and 1 Welsh pony, fractional renal excretions of phosphorus (FEp) determined from 9 hourly time collections taken over a 24-hour period were compared to assess whether a single-sample collection would be an accurate indicator of the daily FEp. The mean FEp for each animal varied from 0.115% to 0.302%; the 2 animals with the highest values were significantly different (P less than 0.05) from the 3 with the lowest values. The effect of nutritional stress on the plasma progestagen levels and embryonic mortality in twin pregnancies of mares. Two thoroughbred mares bearing twins as diagnosed by rectal palpation, were subjected to nutritional stress by drastically reducing the daily ration. This resulted in a marked reduction in plasma progestagen levels and the death of either one or both of the twin embryos.
A morphological study of the lesions of African horsesickness. Gross, histological and ultrastructural findings are described in 6 natural cases and in 2 experimental cases of African horsesickness. From the gross lesions the cases were divisible into 2 groups which represented the previously described pulmonary and mixed forms of the disease. Twelve mares fed altrenogest for 14 d were used to study the effects of a single injection of testosterone propionate on concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) during diestrus, and to relate the normal and perturbed patterns of FSH secretion to subsequent estrous characteristics and fertility. Dansylarginine N-(3-ethyl-1.5-pentanediyl)amide. A potent and selective fluorescent inhibitor of butyrylcholinesterase. Interactions between dansylarginine N-(3-ethyl-1,5-pentanediyl)amide (DAPA) and the cholinesterases were examined by the techniques of enzyme kinetics and fluorescence spectroscopy. When tested with partially purified enzyme preparations, DAPA was a potent inhibitor of butyrylcholinesterase (IC50 = 2 x 10(-7) M) but not of acetylcholinesterase (IC50 = 4 x 10(-4) M). Diagnosis of cardiac lesions by contrast echocardiography. Contrast M-mode echocardiography was utilized to study animals with congenital and acquired cardiac defects. Contrast was produced through the rapid injection of isotonic NaCl solution, the patient's blood, or indocyanine green dye into the circulation. Peripheral vein and intracardiac injections of contrast material were used to document ventricular septal defect, tetralogy of Fallot, atrial septal defect, and mitral valve regurgitation. Equine esophageal pressure profile. Esophageal motility was studied in 5 healthy adult horses, using a 4 side-hole catheter assembly continuously perfused with distilled water. Resting pressure and maximal pressures generated during swallowing were measured over the whole length of the esophagus (mean +/- S means = 132.7 +/- 2.31 cm). Decreased tear production associated with general anesthesia in the horse. Schirmer I tear tests were conducted on 14 horses. The test was performed before and after IV administration of xylazine hydrochloride, during maintenance anesthesia with halothane in oxygen, and 3 hours after discontinuation of anesthesia. Xylazine hydrochloride did not decrease tear production from the mean base-line value of 23.94 +/- 5.23 mm/min after its IV administration. Tear production was decreased to mean values of 15.57 +/- 4.29 mm/min at 30 minutes and 13.84 +/- 4.25 mm/min at 60 minutes during the maintenance of halothane anesthesia. The effects of dipyridamole on TXA2 formation by horse platelet microsomes. The effects of dipyridamole on thromboxane A2 formation by horse platelet microsomes were studied in comparison with those of imidazole, a prototype inhibitor of TXA2 synthetase and nifedipine, a calcium antagonistic vasodilator. Thromboxane A2 was synthesized by incubating PGH2 with horse platelet microsomes and was assayed on the superfused rabbit aorta. Dipyridamole induced as strong an inhibition of TXA2 synthesis as imidazole, while nifedipine was without effects. The possible beneficial clinical outcomes of this effect of dipyridamole are discussed.
Efficacy of ivermectin in controlling Strongyloides westeri infections in foals. Twenty-eight foals whose dams were treated IM with ivermectin (200 micrograms/kg of body weight) on the day of parturition were compared with 35 foals whose dams were administered only the vehicle. The effect of ivermectin on the vertical transmission of Strongyloides westeri and foal heat diarrhea was determined by a comparison of results obtained in the 2 groups.
