Relationships between lymphoid nodules and lymph sinuses in lymph nodes: a study in horses. Secondary lymphoid nodules in lymph nodes of the horse are surrounded by a network of lymph sinuses, including the subcapsular sinus and its extensions around tabeculae, tubular and tubule-like sinuses deeper in the cortex, and sinuses between cord-like projections of cortical tissue. The precise role of this close association between sinuses and nodules in the transport of immune complexes, cells and cytokines is not known.
Metabolic responses to ammonium acetate infusion in exercising horses. The relationship between elevated plasma ammonia (NH3) levels, fatigue development and muscle metabolism were examined in horses during a submaximal fatigue test. Eight Quarter Horse mares were intravenously infused prior to exercise with either sodium acetate (control) or ammonium acetate (AMINF), and exercised to fatigue on an 11% grade treadmill, carrying 27 kg of lead. Horse and marmoset monkey sperm bind to the zona pellucida of salt-stored human oocytes. The present study demonstrates that horse and marmoset monkey sperm can bind to the human zona of salt-stored oocytes that failed to fertilize in vitro. Marmoset monkey sperm are also able to penetrate the salt-stored human zona. In contrast, human sperm do not bind to the zona of either horse or marmoset monkey oocytes. These results suggest that human sperm binding to the zona pellucida is more strictly species-specific than it is for horse and marmoset monkey sperm. In contrast, horse and marmoset monkey sperm contain receptors recognized by the human zona.

Chronic cervical compressive myelopathy in horses: patterns of astrocytosis in the spinal cord. The distribution and morphology of fibrous astrocytes in the cervical spinal cord of normal horses and horses with chronic compressive myelopathy were demonstrated using immunohistochemical staining for glial fibrillary acidic protein. Genomic distribution of heterochromatic sequences in equids: implications to rapid chromosomal evolution. We describe a molecular model for rapid chromosomal evolution that proposes tandemly repeated DNA sequences as a driving force. A prediction of this model is that when extensive rearrangements of euchromatin have been facilitated by heterochromatin, genomes will be characterized by tandemly repeated sequences that have actively changed chromosomal fields by intragenomic movement. Contribution of renal medullary mitochondrial density to urinary concentrating ability in mammals. In mammals, the length of the loops of Henle increases with increasing body size without a concomitant rise in urinary concentrating ability. Genetic predictions of racing performance in quarter horses. Research on the racing performance of quarter horses has been used to develop genetic prediction summaries on all horses with at least one start on record at the American Quarter Horse Association. [Clinical case report: unilateral malformation of the eye of a thoroughbred foal]. A unilateral malformation of the eye of a thoroughbred foal is described. The specific form of the tiny lens we named, "lenticulus". It is correlated with a maximal unchangeable mydriasis. The bulb shows physiological size. A brown-black pigmented mass inhibited (internal) inspection and examination of the middle and rear part of the eye. Special emphasis is laid on the insecure behaviour of the foal. A connection with an iridocyclochoroiditis, which was treated in the mare about a year ago, and the pathological changes in the eye of the foal is not evident.
Atypical cilia in the tracheal epithelium of healthy horses. Specimens of the tracheal epithelium were obtained from two sites in nine healthy horses by a fibre optic endoscope. Electron microscopic examination of 53,550 cilia revealed that 5.2 per cent of cilia were atypical. Nine hundred and seventeen (1.7 per cent) were compound, 78 (0.15 per cent) were swollen, 27 (0.05 per cent) were intracytoplasmic and 171 (3.35 per cent) had microtubular defects. These microtubular defects (159 peripheral and 12 central) were found in 5103 cross-sectioned cilia.
Racing performance of Thoroughbred horses after arthroscopic surgery of the carpus. The case record, and subsequent racing performance, of 110 horses that had undergone arthroscopic surgery of the carpus, were reviewed. Of these, 87% resumed racing, with 43% able to win at least one race, after surgery. Horses with chip fractures from the distal radius had the best prognosis, while horses with sagittal fractures of the third carpal bone had the poorest. The performance of horses with bilateral lesions was similar to those with unilateral lesions. The complete amino acid sequence of equine miniplasminogen (Mr 37,132, 338 residues) was determined with the aid of fragments obtained by cleavage with 2-(2-nitrophenylsulfenyl)-3-methyl-3'-bromoindolenine, cyanogen bromide or clostripain. Biological and immunoactive substances resembling chorionic gonadotropin are present in full-term horse and zebra placentas. This study describes the presence of immunoactive and bioactive eCG-like material in full-term placentas of both domestic horses and zebras. A mechanical trigger for the trot-gallop transition in horses. It is widely thought that animals switch gaits at speeds that minimize energetic cost. Horses naturally switched from a trot to a gallop at a speed where galloping required more energy than trotting, and thus, the gait transition actually increased the energetic cost of running. The production of propionate has been measured in the large colon of two ponies fitted with cannulas and fed on a standard diet of hay or hay and wheat bran. Effect of age on the concentrations of amino acids in the plasma of healthy foals. The concentrations of 23 amino acids in the plasma of 13 healthy foals were determined before suckling, when foals were 1 to 2 days old, 5 to 7 days old, 12 to 14 days old, and 26 to 28 days old. The ratio of the branched chain amino acids to the aromatic amino acids was also calculated at the 5 time points. Responses of cortisol and prolactin to sexual excitement and stress in stallions and geldings. Sexual stimulation induces rapid secretion of cortisol and prolactin (PRL) in stallions.
