Primary structure of horse erythrocyte glycophorin HA. Its amino acid sequence has a unique homology with those of human and porcine erythrocyte glycophorins. The complete amino acid sequence of the major sialoglycoproteins of horse erythrocyte membranes, glycophorin HA, was determined by manual sequencing methods, using tryptic, chymotryptic, and cyanogen bromide fragments. Glycophorin HA is a polypeptide chain of 120 amino acid residues and contains 10 oligosaccharide units attached to the amino-terminal side of the molecule. Its amino terminus is pyroglutamic acid. Transmission electron microscopy of horse embryos 3-16 days after ovulation. The 23 embryos were obtained by flushing the reproductive tract. Though the general cytology was observed, most attention was given to the formation of the embryonic capsule. It first appeared as a thin uniform layer on the inner surface of the zona pellucida of embryos recovered from the uterus on Day 6. By Day 8 the capsule was about 1 micron thick and the zona pellucida had been shed. In fixed embryos of 11 days and over the capsule was 3 microns thick and had a finely stippled but otherwise homogeneous appearance.

Patterns of stallion sexual behaviour in the absence of mares. In the first experiment the response of 93 adult stallions to stimulated and natural sexual stimuli was observed just before and 2 weeks after the breeding season (December and July respectively). About 72% of the stallions reacted the same before and after the breeding season (P less than 0.01) while 9% behaved similarly and 19% differently. Interactions of different albumins and animal sera with insolubilized Cibacron Blue, Evaluation of apparent affinity constants. 1. A high concentration Cibacron Blue-Sepharose derivative has been used to study the affinity chromatography of albumin from eight animal species. 2. The apparent affinity constants for albumin varies between 3.9 x 10(4) M-1 and 0.9 x 10(4) M-1, in the order: Human greater than rabbit greater than horse greater than pig = dog greater than bovine greater than rat greater than chicken. 3. Is Rhodococcus equi a soil organism? A total of 189 isolates of Rhodococcus equi and related organisms and 16 marker strains representing the genera Rhodococcus and Corynebacterium were screened for 160 unit characters in a numerical taxonomic study. Analysis of the data indicated that R. equi forms a relatively homogeneous cluster distinctly separated from the recognized species of Rhodococcus and Corynebacterium (sensu stricto). Comparison of the interaction of equine LH and human chorionic gonadotrophin to equine testicular receptors. Human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) can be used to study horse luteinizing hormone (LH) receptors in stallion testicular tissue. hCG was more stable than horse LH during radioiodination when compared by their abilities to bind to testicular receptor sites. During incubation, neither hormone lost binding activity at 4 degrees C. Horse LH lost binding activity during incubation at 25 degrees C and both hormones lost binding activity at 37 degrees C. Sweating in the intact horse and isolated perfused horse skin. 1. In intact horses, heat-induced sweating occurred initially as pulses, then as a continuous, synchronously fluctuating discharge. 2. Cibacron Blue-induced modification of neutral proteinase from horse blood leukocytes. The proteolytic activity of the elastase-like proteinase from granules of horse blood leukocytes is retained on a column of Cibacron Blue-Sepharose and can be eluted with 0.5 M KSCN. Renal cadmium and zinc concentrations in horses in Norway. Much of the recent interest in cadmium has been inspired by concern about the increasing levels of this element in the environment. Exposure to low levels of cadmium may cause chronic effects. The intake of cadmium takes place mostly via foods. Coagulation studies f plasmas from healthy domesticated animals and persons. Optimal reaction conditions for the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), 1-stage prothrombin time (PT), and Russell's viper venom time were studied for pooled plasmas of horses, cattle, sheep, goats, swine, dogs, cats, and persons. Changes in CaCl2 and NaCl concentrations had significant effects on the APTT and PT reactions. The APTT was more sensitive than the PT to changes in CaCl2 concentration. Plasma oxytocin concentrations in cyclic mares and sexually aroused stallions. An experiment was conducted to measure plasma oxytocin concentrations at 4 different stages of the estrous cycle in 11 pony mares. Effects of early experience on the learning ability of yearling horses. Twenty-four yearling Quarter Horse fillies were divided into three groups (I) very limited handling, (II) intermediate handling and (III) extensive handling. At about 14 months of age, each horse was preconditioned for 2 weeks and then run in a simple place-learning T-maze test in which it had to locate its feed.
