Using negative reinforcement, you can re-establish a predictable and consistent pressure-and-release cycle related to leg cues. This teaches your horse that responding to light leg cues has a clear outcome and that leg cues are worth paying attention to.

Use the following steps to retrain the forward response from the halt: [6]

  1. Start at the halt and apply leg pressure slowly and consistently. Gradually increase pressure until your horse moves even slightly forward. A single step or a forward weight shift is enough at this stage.
  2. As soon as your horse moves forward, take your leg off immediately to release the pressure and reward them.
  3. Repeat this process, releasing pressure when the horse performs the same behavior you rewarded in Step 2. If you reinforced a weight shift or a single step, continue doing this several times until the response is consistent.
  4. Once your horse consistently responds to the lightest pressure possible, ask for a little more before removing the leg pressure. For example, if you were asking for one step, ask for two steps before releasing.
