Some sounds are unmistakable, such as a whinny that carries across a pasture. Others are easy to miss unless you know what to listen for, such as the soft nicker a mare gives her foal or the low roar that can signal a breathing problem in a horse under saddle.

Understanding these sounds starts with recognizing that horses use both vocal and non-vocal signals. Some calls are directed toward other horses over long distances, while quieter sounds are only meaningful when interpreted with the horse’s posture, facial expression, and immediate surroundings.

Horses rely heavily on visual signals to communicate, from ear position to the angle of the head and neck. However, visual signals only work at close range or with a clear line of sight.

Neigh (Whinny)

The neigh, or whinny, is the loudest and longest horse vocalization. It can carry across a pasture and is often the first sound people associate with horses. A whinny typically starts on a lower note and rises into a higher, drawn-out sound, producing two overlapping frequencies at once. [1]

Horses use whinnies mainly to maintain contact over long distances, especially after separation from a herd mate.

Research into whinny patterns shows that these calls carry reliable clues about the caller’s sex, body size, and identity. Horses also respond differently to familiar herd mates than they do to unfamiliar horses. [2]

This ability to recognize individuals extends beyond sound. One study found that horses can match a familiar person’s voice with that person’s face, suggesting that they form a broader representation of familiar individuals that combines vocal identity with visual appearance. [4]

Researchers have identified that equine acoustic cues can involve dualling frequencies associated with emotional valence (whether an experience is positive or negative) and emotional arousal (the level of intensity of an emotion). This suggests horses can communicate highly complex mental experiences through their whinnies. [3]

Nicker

Much quieter than a neigh, a nicker is produced with the horse’s mouth closed and carries only a short distance. It is often accompanied by a soft breath through the nose.

Nickers occur in several specific settings. A stallion may nicker while courting a mare, and a mare often nickers softly to her foal. Many horses also nicker at feeding time or when greeting a familiar handler. [1]

Because the sound travels such a short distance, the listener generally needs to be nearby. Given this, the nicker is usually seen as a close-range bonding signal rather than a broadcast call like the neigh.

Squeal

Horses often squeal when a friendly greeting becomes unwelcome or when a horse is investigating another horse. This sharp, high-pitched sound is usually made with the mouth closed and commonly occurs during close-contact encounters, particularly nose-to-nose sniffing.

When two horses meet for the first time, they often begin with mutual sniffing to exchange information about identity, sex, and reproductive status.

A squeal frequently follows this greeting and acts as an immediate boundary-setting signal, telling the other horse to back away. Mares commonly squeal to rebuff a stallion’s advances, and squealing is also a normal part of stallion-to-stallion displays. [5]

Most squealing exchanges resolve once one horse gives ground or the other accepts the boundary. If the interaction escalates to striking or kicking, follow safe horse-handling practices and separate the horses to help prevent injury.

In an isolated exchange, a squeal rarely indicates serious danger. It typically means that one horse is asking for more space.

Scream

Few owners ever hear a horse scream. A scream is the most intense sound in the horse’s vocal repertoire. It resembles a squeal but is louder and longer, and it is associated with serious conflict, acute pain, or extreme fear. [1]

When screaming occurs, it is usually during a serious fight between horses or in response to a sudden occurrence causing severe pain. Because the sound reflects an extremely high level of arousal, investigate the cause immediately and assess whether veterinary attention is needed.

Non-Vocal Equine Sounds

Not every sound a horse makes involves the voice box. Many familiar sounds result from air moving through the nostrils or mouth without vocal-fold involvement.

These sounds were once assumed to serve mainly practical functions, such as clearing the airway. More recent research suggests that several also convey meaningful emotional information and, in some cases, may indicate nearly the opposite of what horse owners have traditionally assumed.

Snort

A snort is a short, forceful burst of air through the nostrils, often with a fluttering quality as the air passes through. [1]

Snorting has traditionally been interpreted as a sign of alertness or mild alarm, and it can serve that function when a horse notices something unfamiliar. However, research comparing horses in different housing and turnout conditions has also found the opposite pattern. [6]

Horses produced more snorts in situations already considered positive, such as pasture turnout with other horses. Horses with better overall welfare scores also snorted more often than those with poorer welfare scores. [6]

This suggests that a horse snorting while relaxing in a pasture or resting comfortably after work may be expressing contentment rather than alarm. Context still shapes the interpretation: a snort paired with a raised head, wide eyes, and visible tension is more consistent with alertness.

Blow

A blow is a softer, quieter relative of the snort. It typically occurs when a horse investigates something unfamiliar at close range, such as a new object, an unusual smell, or an unexplored area. Unlike the snort, a blow lacks a sharp, fluttering quality and sounds more like a controlled exhalation. Horses commonly blow while approaching something cautiously and gathering information through smell before deciding how to respond. On its own, a blow rarely signals concern. It generally indicates that something has caught the horse’s attention and is being investigated.

Groan

Getting up from a nap, rolling in the dirt, and experiencing colic can all produce the same basic sound: a groan. This low, drawn-out sound can have very different meanings depending on when it occurs. [1]

A groan during a roll or stretch may indicate contentment rather than distress. The same sound during an episode of abdominal pain is a warning sign. Horses experiencing colic may roll and groan together, and that combination warrants an immediate call to your veterinarian.

Because the meaning depends on context, consider what the horse was doing immediately before and after the sound occurred. Check for other signs of colic, including pawing, sweating, or repeated attempts to lie down.

Sigh

After a tense moment passes, many horses release a long, audible breath through the nose, commonly described as a sigh. It often accompanies a visible lowering of the head and neck, and riders may notice it during a walk break after a demanding training session.

Researchers interpret sighing as a release behavior rather than an alarm signal. Similar patterns occur in other species, in which relaxed exhalation becomes more frequent after a stressful sequence ends. [6]

This supports the idea that a sigh marks the end of a stress response rather than its beginning. However, it should still be interpreted alongside the horse’s posture and surrounding circumstances.

Snore

A horse lying flat during deep rest may produce a rhythmic, vibrating snore. Horses generally lie down fully only when they feel sufficiently secure in their environment, because this position leaves them less able to respond quickly.

Occasional snoring during normal rest is generally not a concern. Frequent or loud snoring while a horse is awake and standing, especially when accompanied by labored breathing, may indicate a narrowed upper airway. [1]

If snoring regularly occurs outside of deep sleep, mention it to your veterinarian. It may overlap with upper airway disorders. Learning about normal equine sleep patterns can also help owners distinguish resting sounds from abnormal respiratory noise.

Sounds That May Signal a Health Problem

Most horse sounds are part of normal communication, but some can indicate a genuine health concern. 

These sounds are worth considering separately from social vocalizations because early recognition of an abnormal sound can support prompt veterinary evaluation.

Roaring (Laryngeal Hemiplegia)

Roaring describes a harsh, whistling noise during inhalation when a horse breathes heavily during exercise. It results from laryngeal hemiplegia, a condition in which one side of the larynx becomes partially or fully paralyzed.

The affected side can no longer open fully to allow air to pass. The condition occurs more often in Thoroughbreds, affecting up to 8% of the population, and in draft breeds, affecting up to 35%. [7]

Affected horses may show reduced exercise tolerance along with the noise because the narrowed airway limits airflow during strenuous work. The condition may also progress as the underlying nerve damage worsens. [8]

If you hear a whistling or roaring sound during exercise, a veterinary examination with respiratory endoscopy is required to confirm laryngeal hemiplegia and assess its severity.

Many horses with mild cases continue working successfully, whereas horses with more severe airway obstruction may require surgical correction. [8]

Chronic Coughing

A cough is not technically a vocalization, but owners may notice it alongside sounds such as snoring or noisy breathing. An occasional isolated cough when a horse begins moving or after eating hay may not be a cause for concern.

However, a repeated or chronic cough, particularly one that occurs during exercise or persists for more than a few days, may indicate airway inflammation or respiratory infection. A cough accompanied by nasal discharge or labored breathing warrants a prompt veterinary visit.

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Teeth grinding, or bruxism, produces an audible grinding or rumbling sound rather than a true vocalization. However, it is one of the sounds owners commonly ask about.

Horses may grind their teeth for several reasons, including dental pain, gastric discomfort, and anxiety. [9]

In foals, bruxism often occurs alongside gastric ulcers. [10] In adult horses, sudden-onset teeth grinding is frequently associated with an underlying source of pain, and the behavior may stop once the pain is resolved.

Because grinding can have several possible causes, prompt veterinary assessment is more appropriate than waiting to see whether the behavior resolves on its own.

How to Interpret Your Horse’s Sounds

No single sound tells the whole story. The same vocalization can have different meanings depending on the horse’s posture, ear position, and surrounding circumstances. 

Interpret sound in context and alongside other behavioral and physical cues to form a more reliable picture.

Read Sound Alongside Body Language

Ear position and overall neck carriage can change how a sound should be interpreted. Research using detailed facial and body coding found that horses display a higher, more relaxed neck with their ears forward in positive situations, compared with a lower neck and ears pinned back in negative situations. A snort paired with a relaxed, ears-forward posture is more consistent with contentment. The same sound accompanied by pinned ears and a raised, tense head is more suggestive of alertness.

Facial-expression research adds another layer. Horses show measurable changes around the eyes, ears, and muzzle when experiencing pain, and these facial cues may occur alongside other signs of discomfort, such as groaning or teeth grinding. [12]

Watching the horse’s face and posture can help determine whether a sound reflects discomfort or a more benign response. A broader equine pain assessment can also help owners recognize when subtle changes warrant veterinary attention.

When to Call the Veterinarian

Most horse sounds are part of everyday communication. However, new, persistent, or contextually abnormal sounds may warrant veterinary evaluation, particularly when they occur alongside changes in behavior or physical condition.
