Effects of equine infectious anemia virus on hematopoietic progenitors in vitro. Direct effects of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) on hematopoiesis in vitro were studied. Bone marrow mononuclear cells from clinically normal horses were incubated with 100 TCID50 of EIAV/10(7) cells. These cells were cultured to assay for colonies derived from erythroid progenitors, granulocyte/monocyte progenitors, and fibroblastic progenitors. High-resolution computed tomography of the mammalian lung. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) was performed in 21 isolated animal lungs, from 4 mammalian species (pigs, rabbits, dogs, sheep). Gross and subgross central and peripheral lung morphology was determined by HRCT. Three distinct types of lungs can be identified, principally based on the extent of interlobular septal development; the relationship of major vessels to airways; and the thickness of the visceral pleura. Viscosity and rheologic properties of blood from clinically normal horses. Blood viscosity (BV) was measured in 32 healthy horses at 6 spindle speeds (60, 30, 12, 6, 3, and 1.5 rpm) and for PCV of 40%, using a digital rotational cone and plate microviscometer. Measurement of serum myoglobin concentrations in horses by immunodiffusion. Quantitative immunodiffusion in one dimension was performed in 6-mm Duran tubes containing a 1% Nobel agar solution and various dilutions of antisera. A series of dilutions of pure myoglobin in equine sera as well as plasma from horses with rhabdomyolysis were tested. Standard curves were prepared of the migration distance of the formed precipitate from the meniscus of the gel after 3, 6, 12, and 24 hours. Bronchial circulation during prolonged exercise in ponies. Tracheal, bronchial, and renal flow were studied in 8 healthy ponies at rest and during exercise performed on a treadmill at a speed setting of 20.8 km/h and 7% grade (incline) for 30 minutes. Blood flow was determined with 15-microns-diameter radionuclide-labeled microspheres that were injected into the left ventricle when the ponies were at rest, and at 5, 15, and 26 minutes of exertion. Effects of xylazine on ventilation in horses. The effects of 3 commonly used dosages (0.3, 0.5, and 1.1 mg/kg of body weight, IV) of xylazine on ventilatory function were evaluated in 6 Thoroughbred geldings. Altered respiratory patterns developed with all doses of xylazine, and horses had apneic periods lasting 7 to 70 seconds at the 1.1 mg/kg dosage. Evaluation of sulbactam plus ampicillin for treatment of experimentally induced Klebsiella pneumoniae lung infection in foals. Efficacy of sulbactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, in combination with ampicillin, was evaluated for treatment of experimentally induced pneumonia caused by beta-lactam-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. Morphologic and biochemical study of sternal cartilage autografts for resurfacing induced osteochondral defects in horses. Using biodegradable pins, sternal cartilage autografts were fixed into osteochondral defects of the distal radial carpal bone in ten 2 to 3-year-old horses. The defects measured 1 cm2 at the surface and were 4 mm deep. Control osteochondral defects of contralateral carpi were not grafted. In vitro comparison of equine granulocytes labeled with 99mTc-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime or 111In-oxine. Isolated equine granulocytes (WBC), radiolabeled with 99mTc-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (99mTc-HMPAO) or 111In-oxine, were evaluated in vitro for their labeling characteristics, viability, and phagocytic function over a 6-hour postlabeling period. Isolation and characterization of alpha 1-acid glycoprotein from horses, and its evaluation as an acute-phase reactive protein in horses. Equine alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (alpha 1AG) was isolated from equine serum by successive ammonium precipitation, anion- and cation-exchange chromatographies, and gel filtration. Purified equine alpha 1AG had a molecular weight of 46,000 +/- 1,000, and contained 31.4% carbohydrate. Gel isoelectric focusing revealed an isoelectric point range of 2.8 to 3.7. Affinity chromatography on heparin sepharose was used to identify 2 lipolytic enzymes in heparinized plasma from horses. Pharmacokinetics of phenobarbital in horses after single and repeated oral administration of the drug. Six healthy mature horses were orally administered a single dose of phenobarbital (26 mg/kg of body weight), then multiple doses (13 mg/kg) orally for 42 consecutive days. Determination of total protein concentration and viscosity of synovial fluid from the tibiotarsal joints of horses. Viscosity of synovial fluid (SF) from 29 clinically normal horses was determined by use of a rotational cone and plate microviscosimeter. Total protein concentration in the SF of the 29 horses, as measured with a refractometer, was less than 2.5 g/dl. The mean area and minimal diameter of 3 histochemically determined myofiber types (1, 2A, and 2B; myosin ATPase in acid buffer) were calculated in middle gluteal muscle biopsy specimens from 62 stallions, 47 Andalusians and 15 Arabians, ranging in age from 6 to 12 years. Association between serum cytotoxicity and selected clinical variables in 240 horses admitted to a veterinary hospital. A total of 378 serum samples from 240 hospitalized horses and 47 sera from healthy control horses were assayed for growth effects on actinomycin D-treated L929 cells. On average, patient and control sera stimulated cell growth; however, mean percentage of the relative growth index (RGI) of sera from clinical cases was significantly (P less than 0.001) lower than that of control sera. Bioavailability of two ibuprofen oral paste formulations in fed or nonfed ponies. The bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, was studied in healthy Shetland ponies. Ibuprofen was administered IV, as a suspension, and as a solid solution oral paste to ponies from which food was withheld. The suspension paste was also administered to ponies that received hay and water ad libitum. Both formulations had an absolute bioavailability of about 80%. Bioavailability was not influenced by feeding.
Respiratory muscle perfusion in ponies during prolonged submaximal exercise in thermoneutral environment. Histologic features of the carotid artery trifurcation in thoroughbreds. The common, external, and internal carotid and occipital arteries were examined histologically at the trifurcation of the common carotid arteries in 13 Thoroughbred foals (0 to 30 days old) and 64 Thoroughbred adults (2 to 4 years old). Calcification in the media of the common carotid and external carotid arteries was observed in 3 of the 13 foals and in 30 of the 64 adult horses. Calcification resembled that seen in Mönckeberg's arteriosclerosis in human beings, the cause of which is unknown.
Metabolic response of horses to a high soluble carbohydrate diet: effects of low-intensity submaximal exercise and sodium bicarbonate supplementation. Four mares fed a low fiber, high soluble carbohydrate diet were used in a crossover design to evaluate the effects of dietary sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) supplementation during daily low-intensity submaximal working conditions.
