Factors affecting prognosis and conversion in equine atrial fibrillation.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    January 1, 1988   Volume 2, Issue 1 1-6 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.1988.tb01970.x
Reef VB, Levitan CW, Spencer PA.Sixty-seven horses presented with atrial fibrillation (AF) from January 1, 1980 to August 1, 1986. All horses were evaluated for the type and severity of the underlying cardiac disease and the probable duration of the arrhythmia. Fifty-two (78%) of the horses were treated with quinidine sulfate and/or digoxin. The response to treatment was assessed in each horse. Horses were followed for periods extending from 8 months to 7 years. Standardbreds, young horses, and males predominated in the study group. There were more male horses (stallions and geldings) than mares. Most horses with AF had no e...
Effects of castration on peritoneal fluid in the horse.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    January 1, 1988   Volume 2, Issue 1 22-25 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.1988.tb01973.x
Schumacher J, Schumacher J, Spano JS, McGuire J, Scrutchfield WL, Feldman RG.Twenty-four clinically normal horses were castrated by routine methods. Peritoneal fluid was collected prior to castration and at 1, 3, 5, and 7 days postcastration. Peritoneal fluid was collected on days 9 and 11 if nucleated cell (NC) counts were still markedly elevated on day 7. Peritonitis, defined as NC counts greater than 10,000/microliters, was evident in 15 horses following castration. Mean NC counts peaked on day 5 but were less than 10,000/microliters for 74% of the horses by day 7, and 90% of the horses by day 9. One horse had a NC count greater than 60,000/microliters on day 11 whe...
Therapy of suspected septicemia in neonatal foals using plasma-containing antibodies to core lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    October 1, 1987   Volume 1, Issue 4 175-182 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.1987.tb02012.x
Morris DD, Whitlock RH.Equine antiserum to core lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was evaluated in a double-blind prospective study for therapeutic benefit in suspected septicemia in neonatal foals. Forty foals younger than 7 days of age were included in the study by satisfaction of clinical and laboratory criteria, suggestive of gram-negative septicemia. Twenty-two foals were treated with core LPS antiserum (plasma produced from horses which were hyperimmunized with rough gram-negative mutant bacterin) and 18 foals received "nonimmune" plasma (from horses prior to immunization against core LPS). All foals received antimicro...
Clinical, clinicopathologic, and epidemiologic features of anhidrosis in central Florida Thoroughbred horses.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    July 1, 1987   Volume 1, Issue 3 136-141 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.1987.tb02001.x
Mayhew IG, Ferguson HO.A group of 834 Thoroughbred horses was surveyed on four central Florida farms for clinical and epidemiologic features of anhidrosis. In addition, comparative analysis was made of serum thyroxine, serum electrolytes, and fractional urinary electrolyte excretion ratios. An overall disease prevalence of 6.12% was observed. Training horses and nonpregnant broodmares had a predilection for the disease. Adolescent horses were infrequently affected. There was no correlation with sex or color. Comparative clinical signs, related to thermoregulatory compromise, included tachypnea and hyperthermia. Long...
Equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy: a vitamin E deficiency that may be familial.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    January 1, 1987   Volume 1, Issue 1 45-50 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.1987.tb01985.x
Mayhew IG, Brown CM, Stowe HD, Trapp AL, Derksen FJ, Clement SF.Two horse farms, on which there was a high incidence of proven and suspected equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy (EDM), were studied. Symmetric ataxia and paresis, along with laryngeal adductor, cervicofacial, local cervical, and cutaneous trunci hyporeflexia, characterized the syndrome. Serum vitamin E concentration reflected a deficient state in affected and unaffected horses on both farms when compared with selected reference groups and with published values. A high incidence of the disease was evident in offspring of two particular sires on one farm. Vitamin E supplementation resulted ...
Medical induction of maternal behavior in nurse mares and foal-rejecting mares undergoing foal grafting: a retrospective study of 140 cases.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    September 16, 2026   Volume 40, Issue 4 aalag131 doi: 10.1093/jvimsj/aalag131
Birgitsdotter LM, Friedrichsen Borg H, Kendall A.Medical induction of maternal behavior can be a safer and less stressful way to introduce orphan foals to nurse mares, compared with traditional methods that are time consuming and require restraint of the mare. Published data on results of medical treatment in a large number of mares are lacking. Objective: Describe a hormone-based protocol for foal grafting, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, dinoprost tromethamine, and oxytocin, and to report treatment outcome. Methods: A total of 113 nurse mares and 27 mares that had rejected their foals. Methods: Retrospective case series. Ca...
