A comparison of foal and adult horse neutrophil function using flow cytometric techniques. Flow cytometric assays were used to compare phagocytic and oxidative burst activity of neutrophils from healthy foals less than 7 days of age with the activity of cells from healthy adult horses. The phagocytosis of Staphylococcus aureus by foal neutrophils was less than that observed for adult neutrophils when autologous serum was used as the source of opsonins in the assay. Biochemical markers of bone metabolism in growing thoroughbreds: a longitudinal study. This study describes longitudinal changes in serum levels of biochemical markers of bone cell activity in a group of 24 thoroughbred foals from birth to 18 months of age. In horses, ulceration of the non-glandular region of the stomach is common and has been attributed to the lack of a protective mucus covering. This study aimed to determine whether the non-glandular region is covered by a mucus layer. The effect of high intensity exercise on the functional capacity of equine pulmonary alveolar macrophages and BAL-derived lymphocytes. The effect of strenuous exercise on the functional capacity of pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) and bronchoalveolar lavage-derived lymphocytes was determined in eight horses prior to and after 7 weeks of training. Haematological responses of repeated large volume blood collection in the horse. The haematological response of regular, repeated blood harvesting was investigated in 40 Thoroughbred and non-Thoroughbred horses that donate 8 litres of blood every 3 weeks for the purposes of commercial blood production. Equine osteoclast-like cells generated in vitro demonstrate similar characteristics to directly isolated mature osteoclasts. We report on novel methods to isolate osteoclasts (OC s) and generate osteoclast-like cells (OCL s) from the bone and bone marrow of the equine femur. In vitro stimulation of equine articular cartilage proteoglycan synthesis by hyaluronan and carprofen. The effects of hyaluronan and carprofen (both racemic mixture and separate R and S enantiomers) on proteoglycan (PG) synthesis by equine cultured chondrocytes and cartilage explants were examined.
