Correlation between colic and antibody levels against Anoplocephala perfoliata in horses in The Netherlands.
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    July 26, 2007   Volume 132, Issue 13 508-512
Boswinkel M, Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan MM.The importance of Anoplocephala perfoliata in horses with colic was studied in 139 horses referred for colic and 139 control horses with no signs of colic for at least three years. The serodiagnostic method of Proudman and Trees, which measures the level of A. perfoliata antibody, was used to detect A. perfoliata infection. Thirty-two horses were examined at necropsy, to determine whether the presence of A. perfoliata in the ileocaecal region was associated with the A. perfoliata antibody level. The mean A. perfoliata antibody level was significantly higher in horses with colic than in horses ...

[Unsuccessful laparoscopic castration in a cryptorchid Frisian stallion].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    December 2, 2006   Volume 131, Issue 21 774-777
Voermans M, van der Velden MA.A 2-year-old unilateral inguinal cryptorchid Frisian stallion was castrated by bilateral laparoscopic intra-abdominal spermatic cord transection. Because blood testosterone levels were still high on postoperative day 7, both testicles were removed using an open approach. Pathology revealed the presence of vital Leydig-cells in both testes. Failure of the laparoscopic castration in this horse was attributed to an alternate blood supply to the testes by vessels derived from the cremaster and/or external pudendal artery.

[Vertebral osteomyelitis caused by Rhodococcus equi in a three-and-half-month-old Dutch Warmblood foal].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    September 23, 2006   Volume 131, Issue 17 612-616
Boswinkel M, van der Lugt JJ, Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan MM.Rhodococcus equi infection occurs worldwide and is especially a problem in foals, where it often causes colitis or pneumonia. Other organs are seldom affected, and their involvement is regarded as a complication of pneumonia and/or colitis. Vertebral osteomyelitis is one such rare complication and is probably caused by haematogenous spread from inflammatory lesions in the lungs and/or intestine. In rare cases, osteomyelitis can be caused by contamination of a wound. This case study describes a foal with vertebral osteomyelitis due to R. equi in which there were only minor inflammatory changes ...

Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    September 23, 2006   Volume 131, Issue 17 602-611
Boswinkel M, Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan MM.Infection with Rhodococcus equi is an important cause of pneumonia in foals, but other organ systems may also be affected. The intracellular presence of R. equi and the formation of granulomatous and suppurative inflammatory tissue mean that prolonged treatment is needed. The pharmacological properties of the combination of erythromycin and rifampicin have improved the survival of foals infected with R. equi; however, erythromycin can cause adverse reactions in foals and mares, which has prompted the search for alternative therapies. The combination of azithromycin or clarithromycin with rifam...

Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    August 19, 2006   Volume 131, Issue 14-15 524-530
Eysker M, van Doorn DC, Lems SN, Weteling A, Ploeger HW.Due to excessive and inappropriate use of dewormers anthelmintic resistance has developed as a significant problem in horse parasites in the Netherlands. Since it is unlikely that new classes of anthelmintics against horse nematodes will be introduced in the near future, it is important to use the present drugs wisely. Veterinarians should advice horse owners about worm control programs with a more targeted approach. The number of anthelmintic treatments should be reduced and, through selective anthelmintic treatments, further development of anthelmintic resistance should be delayed. Preferabl...

Workload and stress in horses: comparison in horses ridden deep and round (‘rollkur’) with a draw rein and horses ridden in a natural frame with only light rein contact.
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    March 15, 2006   Volume 131, Issue 5 152-157
Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan MM, Blok MB, Begeman L, Kamphuis MC, Lameris MC, Spierenburg AJ, Lashley MJ.'Rollkur' or 'overbending' is the low and deep riding of a dressage horse during training or warming up. Lately, this technique has been criticized, and not necessarily objectively, on welfare grounds. To be able to evaluate these criticisms, more needs to be known about the workload and stress of horses being ridden 'rollkur'. The aim of the present study was to compare the workload of eight riding-school horses when being ridden deep and round with a draw rein ('rollkur') and when being ridden in a natural frame with only light rein contact ('free'). Workload (as measured by heart rate and b...
The Fell pony immunodeficiency syndrome also occurs in the Netherlands: a review and six cases.
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    March 7, 2006   Volume 131, Issue 4 114-118
Butler CM, Westermann CM, Koeman JP, Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan MM.Over the last ten years a fatal syndrome associated with immunodeficiency and severe anaemia has been reported in young Fell pony foals in the UK. Affected foals are usually normal at birth but from the age of 2-4 weeks they progressively lose condition and become severely anaemic. Signs of immunodeficiency become apparent at around 3-4 weeks of age. Morbidity is low but mortality is 100% despite intensive treatment. Affected foals die or are euthanized usually before they reach the age of 3 months. A single autosomal recessive gene is suggested to be on the basis of the syndrome. Recently, af...
[Halicephalobus gingivalis infection in a 5-year-old Tinker gelding].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    March 1, 2006   Volume 131, Issue 3 74-80
Boswinkel M, Neyens IJ, Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan MM.A 5-year old Tinker gelding was referred to the Department of Equine Sciences with a left eye uveitis and fever. At presentation the horse showed a mild lethargy, fever and decreased vision of the left eye. Rectal examination revealed an enlarged left kidney, with a hard and an irregular surface. The cranial mesentery artery had an enlarged and irregular aspect. Blood analysis showed anaemia, leucocytosis, increased blood urea nitrogen and creatinine and a hyperproteinemia. Urine analysis repeatedly showed a marked proteinuria and an increased gammaGT/creatinine ratio. The amount of abdominal ...

Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    December 21, 2005   Volume 130, Issue 23 726-731
Butler CM, van Gils JA, van der Kolk JH.Piroplasmosis, a disease endemic to most tropical and subtropical areas, appears to be spreading to more temperate zones. This article gives a review of equine piroplasmosis and describes an acute case of infection with Babesia caballi in a Dutch Standard bred foal after a short stay at a stud in Normandy (France). A 3-month-old stallion foal was presented with lethargy, fever of 41 degrees C, and pale mucosal membranes. Haematology revealed a low packed cell volume (14 l/l) leucytosis (25 G/l) and a high blood urea nitrogen concentration (20.1mmol/l). Infection with B. caballi was diagnosed o...
