Metallic foreign bodies in the tongues of 16 horses.
The Veterinary record    October 10, 2006   Volume 159, Issue 15 485-488 doi: 10.1136/vr.159.15.485
Pusterla N, Latson KM, Wilson WD, Whitcomb MB.The history, clinical signs, results of diagnostic imaging, treatment methods and outcome of 16 adult horses with a metallic foreign body in the tongue are reviewed. All the horses had a swollen tongue, they salivated excessively and were partially to completely anorexic. Less common clinical signs were fever, an enlarged and painful intermandibular space, dysphagia, unilateral tongue paralysis and halitosis. Most of the horses had shown clinical signs for less than 24 hours. The foreign bodies were diagnosed by oral examination, radiography and ultrasonography; they were removed from the tong...

Treatment of periocular and non-ocular sarcoids in 18 horses by interstitial brachytherapy with iridium-192.
The Veterinary record    September 12, 2006   Volume 159, Issue 11 337-341 doi: 10.1136/vr.159.11.337
Byam-Cook KL, Henson FM, Slater JD.Treatment of the equine sarcoid has posed a significant challenge to clinicians for years and many different methods have been tried with varying success, including ionising radiation. The aim of this study was to review the efficacy of iridium-192 interstitial brachytherapy for the treatment of eight periocular sarcoids and 15 non-ocular sarcoids on 18 horses. All the periocular sarcoids and 13 of the 15 non-ocular sarcoids were treated successfully.

The Veterinary record    September 12, 2006   Volume 159, Issue 11 349-351 doi: 10.1136/vr.159.11.349
Higgins JC, Leith GS, Pappagianis D, Pusterla N.Pulmonary coccidioidomycosis in horses can often lead to severe systemic disease and its treatment has previously been expensive and has carried a poor prognosis. This paper describes the successful treatment of two horses with pulmonary coccidioidomycosis with a fluconazole product produced by a compounding pharmacy.

The Veterinary record    September 12, 2006   Volume 159, Issue 11 341-346 doi: 10.1136/vr.159.11.341
Pusterla N, Wilson WD, Conrad PA, Barr BC, Ferraro GL, Daft BM, Leutenegger CM.This study was designed to determine the relative levels of gene transcription of selected pathogens and cytokines in the brain and spinal cord of 12 horses with equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), 11 with equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) myeloencephalopathy, and 12 healthy control horses by applying a real time pcr to the formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissues. Total rna was extracted from each tissue, transcribed to complementary dna (cDNA) and assayed for Sarcocystis neurona, Neospora hughesi, EHV-1, equine GAPDH (housekeeping gene), tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interfer...

Evidence of bias affecting the interpretation of the results of local anaesthetic nerve blocks when assessing lameness in horses.
The Veterinary record    September 12, 2006   Volume 159, Issue 11 346-349 doi: 10.1136/vr.159.11.346
Arkell M, Archer RM, Guitian FJ, May SA.Eighteen observers were influenced to different extents in the grades of lameness they allocated to eight horses by whether they knew that a nerve block had been administered; on a scale from 0 to 10 the mean difference in grade allocated once the observer knew a horse had been nerve-blocked was increased by 0.4. The consistency of the assessments made by the individual observers was good, with a an average of 0.6 of a grade difference when grading the same horse on two occasions. The agreement between the assessments of four orthopaedic experts was reasonable (+/-1 grade), but significantly p...

Idiopathic immune-mediated polysynovitis in three horses.
The Veterinary record    July 4, 2006   Volume 159, Issue 1 13-15 doi: 10.1136/vr.159.1.13
Pusterla N, Pratt SM, Magdesian KG, Carlson GP.This paper describes the clinical, laboratory and histological findings in three horses with immune-mediated polysynovitis; they had lost weight, suffered intermittent fever, were lethargic and stiff, and had effusions in several joints. Laboratory abnormalities included anaemia, leucocytosis, hyperfibrinogenaemia and hyperglobulinaemia. The diagnosis was based on the presence of a suppurative, non-septic inflammation in at least two different joints in each of the horses and the presence of immunoglobulins in the synovial membrane of one of them. The horses were treated with a combination of ...
Investigations of the reliability of observational gait analysis for the assessment of lameness in horses.
The Veterinary record    June 27, 2006   Volume 158, Issue 25 852-857 doi: 10.1136/vr.158.25.852
Hewetson M, Christley RM, Hunt ID, Voute LC.The objectives of this study were to assess the reliability of a numerical rating scale (NRS) and a verbal rating scale (VRS) for the assessment of lameness in horses and to determine whether they can be used interchangeably. Sixteen independent observers graded the severity of lameness in 20 videotaped horses, and the agreement between and within observers, correlation and bias were determined for each scale. The observers agreed with each other in 56 per cent of the observations with the NRS and in 60 per cent of the observations with the VRS, and the associated Kendall coefficient of concor...

Evidence for the expression and enzymatic activity of haem oxygenase-1 in the lungs of horses.
The Veterinary record    June 13, 2006   Volume 158, Issue 23 795-797 doi: 10.1136/vr.158.23.795
Wyse CA, Nixon C, McLaughlin M, Dowell FJ, Philbey AW.The aim of this study was to characterise the expression of haem oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in healthy lung tissue from horses and to measure its activity. Samples of lung tissue were collected from six horses euthanased for reasons other than respiratory disease. HO-1 expression and activity were detected in type II alveolar epithelial cells, macrophages and neutrophils in all the samples examined. The activity was dependent on the presence of NADPH and inhibited quantitatively by the addition of increasing concentrations of a competitive inhibitor of HO-1, tin mesoporphyrin IX.
