Resection of the common digital extensor tendon in a gelding.
The Veterinary record    May 10, 2000   Volume 146, Issue 13 373-376 doi: 10.1136/vr.146.13.373
Booth TM, Clegg PD, Singer ER, Cheeseman MT.A four-year-old gelding was lame owing to a chronic septic common digital extensor tendon and sheath. The horse had been treated by open surgical lavage but the sepsis had recurred after three months. Physical, ultrasonographic, cytological and histological examinations confirmed chronic septic tenosynovitis and tendonitis. The entire intrathecal component of the common digital extensor tendon was resected under general anaesthesia and the synovial lining of the sheath was ablated. Postoperatively the horse regained good limb function and became sound.
Omphalocele in a foal.
The Veterinary record    April 25, 2000   Volume 146, Issue 12 341-343 doi: 10.1136/vr.146.12.341
Steinman A, Kelmer G, Avni G, Johnston DE.An omphalocele was detected at birth in a male Arabian foal. The mass contained small intestine and after releasing a constricting band at the body wall, the contents slipped easily back into the abdomen. On the outside was the hairless pink membrane. The interior, now empty of small intestine, contained the umbilical arteries and vein, and a large urachus that extended from the bladder to the opening at the extremity of the mass. Six days after corrective surgery the foal was sent home and remained healthy.

Functional and histopathological evidence of cardiac parasympathetic dysautonomia in equine grass sickness.
The Veterinary record    March 29, 2000   Volume 146, Issue 9 246-250 doi: 10.1136/vr.146.9.246
Perkins JD, Bowen IM, Else RW, Marr CM, Mayhew IG.The parasympathetic terminal cardiac ganglia were examined in three normal horses and in five horses with grass sickness. Histopathological changes, consistent with those observed in other ganglia of horses with grass sickness, were identified in the terminal cardiac ganglia of the affected horses. A functional analysis of cardiac autonomic control by time domain analysis (TDA) of heart rate variability was applied to eight horses with grass sickness, and double-paired to 16 normal horses on the basis of their age, sex and breed, and the time of day at which the electrocardiographs were obtain...

Survey of retinal haemorrhages in neonatal thoroughbred foals.
The Veterinary record    February 22, 2000   Volume 146, Issue 4 95-101 doi: 10.1136/vr.146.4.95
Munroe G.Twenty-seven of 167 neonatal thoroughbred foals (16 per cent) were found to have retinal haemorrhages after a careful examination of the entire fundus. Experience in differentiating haemorrhages from other lesions, and the selection of foals from normal populations, were considered to have an important effect on their apparent incidence. Bilateral haemorrhages were more common and there was a significantly higher incidence in female foals. The numbers of haemorrhages ranged between one and 20; 36 per cent of eyes with retinal haemorrhages had the small punctate type and 56 per cent had the spl...
Retrospective study of the relationships between age, inflammation and the isolation of bacteria from the lower respiratory tract of thoroughbred horses.
The Veterinary record    February 22, 2000   Volume 146, Issue 4 91-95 doi: 10.1136/vr.146.4.91
Chapman PS, Green C, Main JP, Taylor PM, Cunningham FM, Cook AJ, Marr CM.A total of 1235 tracheal aspirates taken from 724 thoroughbreds in race training, aged from two to 10 years, were examined cytologically and bacteriologically. An inflammation scoring system on a scale of 0 to 9 was devised to allow the severity of lower airway disease to be assessed from the cytological results. The inflammation scores were closely related to the isolation of bacteria (P<0.001), and the most common bacterial isolates were Streptococcus zooepidemicus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Pasteurella/Actinobacillus-like species. Lower airway disease was less common in older horses (...

Impact of injuries and disease on a cohort of two- and three-year-old thoroughbreds in training.
The Veterinary record    December 22, 1999   Volume 145, Issue 17 487-493 doi: 10.1136/vr.145.17.487
Bailey CJ, Reid SW, Hodgson DR, Rose RJ.A prospective study of injuries and disease in a cohort of Australian thoroughbreds in training was conducted with the participation of 24 trainers. From the horses catalogued at a major yearling sale in 1995, 169 were enrolled in the study and followed through their two- and three-year-old racing seasons. The principal aim was to quantify the time lost in training as a result of the various categories of injuries and disease, recorded as either days of modified training, or weeks rested at pasture. Shin soreness was the most common condition in two-year-olds (affecting 42 per cent of the hors...

Equine influenza in the United Kingdom in 1998.
The Veterinary record    November 27, 1999   Volume 145, Issue 16 449-452 doi: 10.1136/vr.145.16.449
Newton JR, Verheyen K, Wood JL, Yates PJ, Mumford JA.In 1998, equine influenza was diagnosed by serology and nucleoprotein enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay as the cause of acute respiratory disease in vaccinated and unvaccinated horses in the UK. The signs were generally milder in vaccinated horses and completely susceptible animals showed the most severe signs, including pyrexia, inappetence, coughing, mucopurulent nasal discharge and secondary bacterial pneumonia. In a detailed investigation of an outbreak among 52 vaccinated thoroughbreds in a flat racing yard, more than 60 per cent of the horses seroconverted on the evidence of paired serum...
Serological surveillance of equine viral arteritis in the United Kingdom since the outbreak in 1993.
The Veterinary record    November 27, 1999   Volume 145, Issue 18 511-516 doi: 10.1136/vr.145.18.511
Newton JR, Wood JL, Castillo-Olivares FJ, Mumford JA.Serological analysis of blood samples submitted to the Animal Health Trust showed that during 1995, 185 of 9203 unvaccinated horses (2.0 per cent) tested positive for antibodies to equine arteritis virus (EAV), and that during 1996, 46 of 8851 unvaccinated horses (0.52 per cent) tested positive. During both years thoroughbreds were the predominant breed tested and only a small proportion of these (<0.3 per cent), consisting predominantly of imported mares, were seropositive. In contrast, among standardbred horses, from which samples were actively solicited in 1995, 84 of 454 (18.5 per cent)...

Demographic characteristics of the equine population of northern Britain.
The Veterinary record    October 9, 1999   Volume 145, Issue 11 299-304 doi: 10.1136/vr.145.11.299
Mellor DJ, Love S, Gettinby G, Reid SW.The size, composition and distribution of the equine population of Scotland and the five northernmost counties in England were estimated through a series of mailed questionnaire surveys of sentinel veterinary practices and horse owners. An estimated 96,622 equine animals were kept by an estimated 26,114 owners. The mean (sd) age of the population was 11.0 (7.5) years (range one month to 37 years). Thoroughbred or thoroughbred-cross animals were the most numerous, constituting 30 per cent (95 per cent confidence interval 27 to 33 per cent) of the total population. The ratio of males:females was...
Experimental cross-infections with Ehrlichia phagocytophila and human granulocytic ehrlichia-like agent in cows and horses.
The Veterinary record    October 9, 1999   Volume 145, Issue 11 311-314 doi: 10.1136/vr.145.11.311
Pusterla N, Pusterla JB, Braun U, Lutz H.Four cows and four horses were infected experimentally with Ehrlichia phagocytophila, the cause of tickborne fever in ruminants, and with human granulocytic ehrlichia-like agent, a recently discovered species that infects people, horses and dogs in the USA and Europe. They were infected in either order, 30 days apart, to investigate serological cross-reactivity within the Ephagocytophila genogroup. The course of infection was assessed by routine clinical, haematological, serological and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) examinations. Two of the cows infected with Ephagocytophila and two of the h...

Lameness associated with the bicipital bursa in an Arab stallion.
The Veterinary record    September 29, 1999   Volume 145, Issue 7 194-198 doi: 10.1136/vr.145.7.194
Booth TM.Severe, chronic lameness in the left forelimb of a five-year-old Arab stallion was localised to the bicipital bursa by local anaesthesia and gamma scintigraphy. Radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations of the proximal humeral tubercles and bicipital bursa revealed new bone production in the region of the intertubercular grooves and irregularities in the density of the soft tissues of the bicipital tendon and bursa. An endoscopic examination of the bicipital bursa with a standard arthroscope under general anaesthesia was a useful diagnostic procedure. The stallion was euthanased, and mark...
