An intersex horse with X chromosome trisomy.
The Veterinary record    February 18, 1989   Volume 124, Issue 7 169-170 doi: 10.1136/vr.124.7.169
Moreno-Millan M, Delgado Bermejo JV, Lopez Castillo G.An X-trisomy has been detected in an intersexuality Spanish-bred horse by using G- and C-banding methods. The external characteristics and the behavioural and physiological irregularities of the horse are described. This is the first time that an association between an X-trisomy and a case of intersexuality has been reported in any domestic animal.
Use of polysulphated glycosaminoglycan in equine lameness.
The Veterinary record    January 28, 1989   Volume 124, Issue 4 89-90 doi: 10.1136/vr.124.4.89
Collins EA.Four cases of equine lameness were treated with intra-articular polysulphated glycosaminoglycan. Two, two-year-old flat racers were treated conservatively after traumatic injury. They subsequently became lame owing to the formation of new bone and osteophytes. Two older steeplechasers were lame owing to degenerative joint disease. The four horses were treated with intra-articular injections of polysulphated glycosaminoglycans and, after three or four injections, they became clinically sound and were able to continue racing with varying degrees of success.

Two related cases of cerebellar abnormality in equine fetuses associated with hydrops of fetal membranes.
The Veterinary record    November 12, 1988   Volume 123, Issue 20 513-514 doi: 10.1136/vr.123.20.513
Waelchli RO, Ehrensperger F.Hydrops allantois was diagnosed in two Haflinger mares with severe abdominal distension. Both mares were seven months pregnant. Abortion was induced with two injections of prostaglandin six hours apart followed by further manual dilation of the cervix and administration of oxytocin the next day. There were 90 and 95 litres of fluid, respectively, in the allantoic cavities which resembled extracellular fluid with regard to concentrations of urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphate and chloride, but not total protein. Both fetuses had severe brain abnormalities which we...

Detomidine-butorphanol sedation in equine clinical practice.
The Veterinary record    October 8, 1988   Volume 123, Issue 15 388-390 doi: 10.1136/vr.123.15.388
Taylor PM, Browning AP, Harris CP.Combinations of detomidine (mean dose rate 13 micrograms/kg) and butorphanol (mean dose rate 26 micrograms/kg) were used to sedate 61 horses for a variety of surgical or diagnostic procedures in general equine practice. Three horses were sedated on more than one occasion. The degree of sedation was graded from 3 to 0 (deep sedation to no effect) and any side effects were recorded. Forty-three per cent of the horses were graded 3, 46 per cent were graded 2, 8 per cent were graded 1 and 3 per cent were graded 0. Bradycardia and ataxia were the major side effects. The combination was judged to be...

Treatment of Fasciola hepatica infection in horses with triclabendazole.
The Veterinary record    September 17, 1988   Volume 123, Issue 12 320-321 doi: 10.1136/vr.123.12.320
Rubilar L, Cabreira A, Giacaman L.Thirteen thoroughbred foals with an adult infection and a presumed immature infection with Fasciola hepatica were treated with 12 mg triclabendazole/kg bodyweight. The absence of eggs from samples of faeces examined at intervals up to 110 days after treatment showed that all the animals were cured. In a second trial the same dose of triclabendazole cured 11 of 12 foals whereas nitroxynil at 7 mg/kg cured only six of 12 foals. No side effects were observed after treatment.
Effect of environmental temperature and relative humidity on breathing pattern and heart rate in ponies during and after standardised exercise.
The Veterinary record    September 10, 1988   Volume 123, Issue 11 295-299 doi: 10.1136/vr.123.11.295
Art T, Lekeux P.A preliminary study attempted to assess the influence of atmospheric conditions on the breathing pattern of ponies. The respiratory airflow, tidal volume, breathing frequency, minute volume, total pulmonary resistance and heart rate of five ponies (257 +/- 9 kg and three to five years old) were measured by a standardised procedure. Data were collected at rest, during a nine minute period of treadmill exercise and during a five minute recovery period. The ambient temperature (degrees C) and relative humidity (%) were recorded at the time of each investigation and the respiratory parameters were...
Detection of endotoxin in cases of equine colic.
The Veterinary record    September 3, 1988   Volume 123, Issue 10 269-271 doi: 10.1136/vr.123.10.269
King JN, Gerring EL.The Limulus amoebocyte lysate assay was used to test for the presence of endotoxin in 37 clinical cases of equine colic. Positive plasma titres were detected in 10 cases and the presence of endotoxin was significantly correlated with a high heart rate, a high packed cell volume and a poor prognosis. High levels of endotoxin were detected in gut contents taken from several sites in the gastrointestinal tract of normal horses.

Experimental chemotherapy in horses infected with benzimidazole-resistant small strongyles.
The Veterinary record    August 27, 1988   Volume 123, Issue 9 219-221 doi: 10.1136/vr.123.9.219
Britt DP, Clarkson MJ.The presence of benzimidazole-resistant strains of equine small strongyles was confirmed in horses at two properties in north west England by a series of faecal egg counts and larval cultures after treatment with mebendazole. A trail formulation of mebendazole in combination with piperazine citrate gave greater reductions in faecal egg counts than mebendazole alone but was much less effective than pyrantel embonate or dichlorvos.
Pre-chemotactic and chemotactic properties of uterine fluid from mares with experimentally induced endometritis.
The Veterinary record    August 20, 1988   Volume 123, Issue 8 193-195 doi: 10.1136/vr.123.8.193
Pycock JF, Allen WE.Streptococcal endometritis was induced experimentally in pony mares during oestrus. Uterine fluid was collected 30, 60, 120 or 240 minutes later and tested for its effect on the in vitro morphology and chemotaxis of equine neutrophils by two independent methods. The maximal response occurred between 30 and 60 minutes after infection and persisted until 240 minutes. The chemo-attractant contained both heat labile and heat stable components and the latter appeared to be active at low concentrations.
Small intestinal obstruction associated with wood chewing in two horses.
The Veterinary record    August 20, 1988   Volume 123, Issue 8 196-198 doi: 10.1136/vr.123.8.196
Green P, Tong JM.Although wood chewing by horses is recognised as a common vice, there are few reports of specific disease associated with the habit. Two cases of acute obstruction of the small intestine by solid aggregations of wood splinters are described in horses which were both habitual wood chewers. Details are presented of the clinical findings in these cases, including the surgical treatment of acute colic. Both horses returned to full working fitness. The authors review the syndrome of enterolithiasis in horses, and discuss the causes and significance of wood chewing as a stable vice.
Equine post anaesthetic myositis: muscular post ischaemic hyperaemia measured by laser Doppler flowmetry.
The Veterinary record    July 30, 1988   Volume 123, Issue 5 126-128 doi: 10.1136/vr.123.5.126
Serteyn D, Lavergne L, Coppens P, Mottart E, Philippart C, Micheels M, Lamy M.Measurements of muscular microcirculation in horses anaesthetised with halothane were performed by laser Doppler flowmetry. Variations of microcirculation in the compressed and uncompressed triceps brachii were measured when horses were positioned in dorsal recumbency after a prolonged period in lateral recumbency. A significant post ischaemic hyperaemia was recorded in horses which developed a post anaesthetic myositis.

Ureteropyelonephritis in a Friesian mare.
The Veterinary record    June 18, 1988   Volume 122, Issue 25 609-610 doi: 10.1136/vr.122.25.609
Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan MM, Kalsbeek HC.A 14-year-old Friesian breeding mare had strangury, depression, inappetence, neutrophilia and uraemia. Its urine had a low specific gravity and contained protein, blood cells and bacteria. Rectal examination showed that both kidneys and ureters were enlarged. Post mortem examination confirmed the diagnosis of pyelonephritis and revealed that small tumours in the vulva were probably the cause of the uropathy.
