Chronic nephritis in a pony.
The Veterinary record    April 7, 1979   Volume 104, Issue 14 307-309 doi: 10.1136/vr.104.14.307
Buntain B, Greig WA, Thompson H.The clinical and pathological features of a case of chronic nephritis in a 17-year-old pony was described. Measurement of fluid intake and laboratory analysis of sequential blood and urine samples helped in establishing an accurate diagnosis. The case demonstrates that although chronic renal disease is not well documented in the horse it should nevertheless be considered in the differential diagnosis of conditions characterised by progressive loss of weight.

The Veterinary record    March 24, 1979   Volume 104, Issue 12 260-262 doi: 10.1136/vr.104.12.260
Fernie DS, Cayzer I, Chalmers SR.A passive haemagglutination test (PHT) which has been developed for the detection of antibodies to the contagious equine metritis organism (CEMO) in serum is described. Samples from each of 30 mares with metritis were positive with titres in the range 256 to 4096. Samples from each of 239 clinically normal mares and 30 colts and fillies believed not to have been exposed to CEMO were negative with titres of less than 256, the majority of samples (97 per cent) showing a titre of 32 or less.

Allen WE, Newcombe JR.The three groups of bacteria that cause endometritis in the mare are reviewed. The different methods of swabbing are assessed and the criteria which should be observed when developing a swabbing technique listed. The choice of speculum and swabs available are described.
Colonic obstructions due to enteroliths in four horses.
The Veterinary record    March 10, 1979   Volume 104, Issue 10 209-211 doi: 10.1136/vr.104.10.209
Blue MG.Four cases of enterolith obstruction in horses aged from six to 14 years are reported. All four cases had symptoms of persistent low grade abdominal pain and anorexia with an absence of defaecation. Examination revealed reduced gut motility and accumulation of gas, but heart and respiratory rates, rectal temperatures and complete blood counts were all within normal limits. Enteroliths of varying sizes were removed from the region of the transverse colon in all four horses.

Abnormalities in the oestrous cycle in the mare.
The Veterinary record    February 24, 1979   Volume 104, Issue 8 166-167 doi: 10.1136/vr.104.8.166
Allen WE.The situations and conditions that can disrupt the mares normal oestrous cycle are described. Season of the year is a major influence; maximum reproductive efficiency does not totally coincide with the artificially defined "breeding season". Other abnormalities are associated with spontaneously persistent luteal function, psychological influences over behavioural activity, the presence of endometritis, multiple ovulation, reproductive behavior after pregnancy failure and granulosa cell tumours.
Ischaemic necrosis of the navicular bone and its treatment.
The Veterinary record    February 17, 1979   Volume 104, Issue 7 133-137 doi: 10.1136/vr.104.7.133
Colles CM.In a survey of 95 control horses and 16 horses with navicular disease, the incidence of erosions and discoloration of the flexor cartilage of the navicular bone was no different between the control horses and those with navicular disease. All cases of navicular disease showed thrombosis of the distal navicular nutrient arteries and this could be related to a change to a rounded or flask shape of the distal nutrient foramen of the navicular bone. Erosions and discoloration of the navicular bone are therefore of no significance in navicular disease. Previously described lines of treatment are of...

Nazer AH.The antibiotic resistance patterns and the distribution of R-factors among Escherichia coli isolated from apparently healthy dogs, cattle, sheep and horses were studied. It was found that 102 strains (16.48 per cent) of a total of 619 isolates were resistant to one or more drugs. Twenty-six per cent (27 strains) of the resistant strains were capable of transferring either a part or the entire resistance patterns to the sensitive recipient strain. These results indicates that antibiotic resistance and R-factors are not particularly widespread among animals whose diet does not cotain antimicrobi...

Pathological features of multiple bone infection in the foal.
The Veterinary record    November 25, 1978   Volume 103, Issue 22 482-485 doi: 10.1136/vr.103.22.482
Bennett D.The gross and histological features of multiple bone infection in two foals are described. In both cases the lesions were confined to the region of the growth plate. Bone and, in some cases, growth plate cartilage destruction has occurred associated with an extensive inflammatory cell infiltration. The significance of the pathological observation is discussed in relation to the pathogenesis of bone infection in the foal.

Contagious equine metritis: the present situation reviewed and a revised code of practice for its control.
The Veterinary record    October 28, 1978   Volume 103, Issue 18 399-402 doi: 10.1136/vr.103.18.399
Powell DG, David JS, Frank CJ.This report contains details of the code of practice for the control of contagious equine metritis (CEM) during the 1979 breeding season. It was prepared under the guidance of a scientific committee established by the Horserace Betting Levy Board under the chairmanship of Sir David Evans, FRS. The code is similar to the one introduced for the 1978 breeding season but takes into account the experience gained during the past 12 months. Following discussions with colleagues in Ireland it has been agreed that a similar code of practice will be introduced in the United Kingdom and Ireland so as to ...
