Recording of intratracheal pressure in the horse under field conditions as a method for evaluation of upper airway resistance.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    September 1, 1993   Volume 40, Issue 7 516-524 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1993.tb00660.x
Roethlisberger-Holm K.Recording of intratracheal pressure during exercise as a method for evaluating upper airway obstruction in the horse has previously been carried out on the treadmill. In the present study the method was applied to normal horses, outdoors under field conditions, to assess its usefulness for analysis of respiratory problems mainly occurring under racing conditions. The horses examined performed a standardized exercise test during which the intratracheal pressure was recorded with a tape recorder receiving amplified signals from a transducer connected to a percutaneously inserted intratracheal ca...
Effect of a booster vaccination against influenza and equine herpes virus on cardio-respiratory adjustments to strenuous exercise and training in thoroughbred horses.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    September 1, 1993   Volume 40, Issue 7 481-491 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1993.tb00656.x
Art T, Lekeux P.This study was conducted in order to assess whether exercise- and training-induced cardio-respiratory adjustments are modified during the 10-day period which follows a booster vaccination with an oily adjuvanted inactivated vaccine against influenza and equine herpesvirus-1 (Equiffa). Nine healthy vaccinated thoroughbred horses were used. Six were revaccinated and three were kept as control. All the horses completed a standardised exercise test (SET) that was repeated 4 times, i.e. 10 (SET1) and 2 (SET2) days before revaccination, and 2 (SET3) and 10 (SET4) days after revaccination. During the...
Desmitis of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon in the horse: clinical and ultrasonographic features. A report of 24 cases.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    September 1, 1993   Volume 40, Issue 7 492-500 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1993.tb00657.x
van den Belt AJ, Becker CK, Dik KJ.The clinical and ultrasonographic features of desmitis of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon (carpal check ligament) are reported in a series of 24 horses. Lameness associated with the carpal check ligament especially was found in Warmblood riding horses ranging in age from 6 to 18 years with a mean age of 11.3 years. The most striking clinical feature was a firm, painful swelling medially and laterally in the proximal and/or mid metacarpal region, corresponding with the dorsoproximal-palmarodistal oblique direction of the carpal check ligament. Sonographically swelling o...
[M-mode echocardiography in dressage horses, class S jumping horses and untrained horses].
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    May 1, 1993   Volume 40, Issue 4 292-306
Stadler P, Rewel A, Deegen E.Heart structures of 45 warmblooded horses were measured by M-mode-echocardiography. The current training level of 15 dressage horses (group I) and 15 show-jumping horses (group II) was category "S". In the third group were 15 untrained horses. Four standardized transducer positions were determined for the m-mode echobeam, calibrated according to the two-dimensional real time technique. End systolic and end diastolic diameters of left ventricle, right ventricle, aortic root, interventricular septum and left ventricular wall, as well as motion pattern of heart wall, mitral valve and aortic valve...
Pyrrolizidine alkaloidosis in a two month old foal.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    April 1, 1993   Volume 40, Issue 3 213-218 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1993.tb00619.x
Small AC, Kelly WR, Seawright AA, Mattocks AR, Jukes R.A foal, small and jaundiced from birth, succumbed after two months to chronic hepatic damage which was characterised by fibrosis, biliary ductular hyperplasia and the presence of pleomorphic hepatocytes containing either a single large nucleus or multiple nuclei. The fixed liver contained sulfur-bound pyrroles, which are derived from pyrrolizidine alkaloids. During pregnancy the pasture was heavily infested with the pyrrolizidine alkaloid-containing plant, Senecio madagascariensis. The hepatic disease affecting the foal appears to have been initiated by consumption of the alkaloids by the mare...
[Laryngeal hemiplegia in warmblood horses–a study of stallions, mares and their offspring].
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    March 1, 1993   Volume 40, Issue 2 134-154
Ohnesorge B, Deegen E, Miesner K, Geldermann H.Laryngoscopic examination during sedation was performed on 24 stallions and on their offspring (240 foals and 474 adult horses). Additionally the dams (n = 308) of 35 foals and 216 horses were examined. With the bilateral comparison of the arytaenoid movements the function of the abductory and adductory laryngeal muscles were evaluated and the left abductory dysfunction (idiopathic laryngeal hemiplegia, ILH) was divided into six degrees. The incidence and degree of ILH depended on age and the occurrence of the same dysfunction in the parents. Foals suffered in significantly lower number (24.7 ...
Effects of intraarticular corticosteroid and sodium hyaluronate injections on synovial fluid production and synovial fluid content of sodium hyaluronate and proteoglycans in normal equine joints.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    February 1, 1993   Volume 40, Issue 1 10-16 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1993.tb00595.x
Ronéus B, Lindblad A, Lindholm A, Jones B.Hyaluronate and cartilage proteoglycan fragments in synovial fluid from normal equine joints were determined after repeated intraarticular injections of beta-methasone, methylprednisolone, hyaluronate, saline and a combination of beta-methasone + hyaluronate and methylprednisolone + hyaluronate. The experimental intraarticular treatments were given at the beginning of the study and after one and two weeks. Synovial samples were obtained at the onset of the study and after 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. The synovial volume was determined and showed no significant changes after the repeated arthroc...
Diurnal changes in cortisol level, neutrophil number and lyzozyme activity in foals during the first 13 weeks of life and in their lactating mothers.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    November 1, 1992   Volume 39, Issue 9 641-647 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1992.tb00229.x
Flisińska-Bojanowska A, Gill J, Grzelkowska K.In the blood of 11 foals and their lactating mothers (Standardbred) diurnal changes in the cortisol level, neutrophil number and lysozyme activity were studied during the first 13 weeks of life. The investigations began when a foal reached 7 days of age and were repeated every two weeks till 13 weeks of age. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein every 4 hours for one day. Experiments were repeated in two following years. In the first year 6 mares and 6 foals born by these mares were examined, and in the second year--5 of the mares from the first year and the 5 new foals borne by them....
[B-mode, M-mode and Doppler sonographic findings in mitral valve insufficiency of horses].
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    November 1, 1992   Volume 39, Issue 9 704-718
Stadler P, Weinberger T, Kinkel N, Deegen E.B- and M-mode echocardiography was performed on 38 horses. 34 patients had systolic heart murmur with the point of maximal intensity over mitral valve. Additionally, 17 of these patients were examined with the pulsed wave doppler echocardiography (Vingmed 200). In 26 patients with cardiac murmur and in 4 patients without cardiac murmur a mitral valve insufficiency was diagnosed by echocardiography. In 8 horses with a systolic murmur over mitral valve M- and B-mode evaluation could not reveal a haemodynamic importance of the murmur. The diagnosis of MVI was based on a dilation of left atrium wi...
The effect of regional nerve blocks on the lameness caused by collagenase induced tendonitis in the midmetacarpal region of the horse: a study using gait analysis, and ultrasonography to determine tendon healing.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    June 1, 1992   Volume 39, Issue 5 349-364 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1992.tb00192.x
Keg PR, van den Belt AJ, Merkens HW, Barneveld A, Dik KJ.The influence of regional nerve blocks on lameness resulting from tendon injury was studied in six horses. Tendonitis was induced in the midmetacarpal region of the Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon (SDF), Deep Digital Flexor Tendon (DDF) and the Suspensory Ligament (SL) through collagenase injections. The results were evaluated through sequential clinical examinations, ultrasonographic imaging and kinetic gait analysis (force plate) during a period of 144 days post injury and subsequently compared with gross and microscopic findings. The lameness corresponding to the SDF and DDF tendon lesion...

The wagon was loaded with 946 kg for the low load, 1,979 kg for the medium load and 2,994 kg for the high load, and drawn for a distance o...
Villous hypoplasia of the small intestine in neonatal foals.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    March 1, 1992   Volume 39, Issue 2 121-129 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1992.tb00164.x
Oikawa M, Kaneko M, Yoshikawa T.To elucidate the pathomorphogenesis of extremely shortened small-intestinal villi, occurring spontaneously in neonatal foals, the morphology of the small intestine with stunted villi was studied in eight cases. All intestinal wall elements and the villi were poorly developed. Most villi were found to be extremely short throughout the entire length of the small intestine. The villous core consisted of undifferentiated, fibroblast-like cells held loosely together by ground substance which was rich in glycosaminoglycan. Development of the villous lamina propria was poor with respect to capillarie...
[The effect of storage time and temperature on the activity of glutathione peroxidase in plasma and whole blood of horses].
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    March 1, 1992   Volume 39, Issue 2 81-88
Wahdati A, Lindner A, Sommer H.The influence of temperature and duration of storage on glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in plasma and whole blood samples of horses was investigated. Furthermore the relationships between the GSH-Px activities in plasma and whole blood as well as the GSH-Px values related to hematocrit and the hemoglobin content of the blood samples of 93 different horses were calculated. At 20-22 degrees C, the GSH-Px activity in plasma and whole blood samples remained stable over at least three days while it was reduced by 38% and 65% after 2 and 3 days, if the whole blood samples were kept stored a...
Development of lymphocyte blastogenic response in the neonatal period of foals.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    February 1, 1992   Volume 39, Issue 1 69-75 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1992.tb00157.x
Sanada Y, Noda H, Nagahata H.The blastogenic response of lymphocytes and serum concentration of cortisol from eighteen foals were evaluated during various stages of the neonatal period. The results of blastogenic responses were expressed by a stimulation index (SI). Blastogenic response to three mitogens was lowest at birth (PHA: 1.17 +/- 0.02, Con A: 1.11 +/- 0.05 and PWM: 1.02 +/- 0.01), then increased gradually with slight variations postpartum. The serum concentration of cortisol was highest at birth (44.0 ng/ml) and decreased rapidly to 19.3 ng/ml within 1 week postpartum, and then was maintained at this level. The h...

The horses were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 consisted of 10 foals (mean age: 4 +/- 1 months) which were biopsied at 3 different sites in the wing of ilium. Group 2 comprised 10 older horses (mean age: 91 +/- 63 months) which were biopsied from only one site in the left ilium. A system...
Bone biopsy in the horse. 1. Method using the wing of ilium.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    December 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 10 776-783 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1991.tb01078.x
Savage CJ, Jeffcott LB, Melsen F, Ostblom LC.Two hundred and five bone biopsies from the wing of ilium were taken from 52 growing and 70 older horses. The method was initially evaluated in 4 horses at post mortem and then performed in 26 horses under general anaesthesia. The technique was later developed for biopsying horses in the standing position under local anaesthesia (n = 70 adults; n = 22 foals). The core of the bone biopsy consisted of a central cancellous portion between two cortices. This type of sample allowed a complete histomorphometrical analysis. An integral part of the procedure was intravital bone labelling using fluoroc...

Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    December 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 10 793-797 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1991.tb01080.x
Savage CJ, Tidd LC, Ostblom LC, Melsen F, Jeffcott LB.Histomorphometrical analysis of bone biopsies from the wing of ilium in 35 clinically normal horses are reported according to age. The biopsies were collected from 20 mixed-bred foals (mean age 6 +/- 1 months) and 15 older horses (mean age 73 +/- 62 months). No gender differences were found in the group of foals examined, but a significant difference (p less than 0.001) in a number of the primary measurements occurred between them and the older horses. The parameters which altered with age were the extent of osteoid surface (OS/BS), the extent of resorption (erosion) surface (ES/BS), the osteo...
Possible importance for laminitis research of recent studies on substances influencing the differentiation of cultured keratinocytes.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    December 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 10 721-727 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1991.tb01071.x
Ekfalck A, Jones B, Obel N.After a survey of the state of laminitis research the authors conclude that none of the present concepts of the pathogenesis of laminitis unequivocally explains the basic clinical and morphological observations in this disease. There is therefore reason to consider the advances that have been made during the last decades in respect to the influence of various substances on the differentiation of cultured skin keratinocytes. The technique is available for studying hoof keratinocytes in a comparable way. Relevant literature on cultured skin keratinocytes is surveyed. Some of the results from exp...
Cardiovascular effects of low dose calcium chloride infusions during halothane anaesthesia in dorsally recumbent ventilated ponies.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    December 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 10 728-736 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1991.tb01072.x
Gasthuys F, De Moor A, Parmentier D.The effects of calcium chloride administered at low infusion rates on the cardiovascular depression and the blood calcium balance were studied during a constant halothane anaesthesia in dorsally recumbent ventilated ponies. A pronounced cardiopulmonary depression characterized by decreases of all cardiac parameters and lowering of the mean arterial blood pressure was observed after the initial anaesthetic stabilization period of 30 minutes in the ponies. A significant decrease in the total calcium plasma concentration together with a constant ionized and complexed calcium fraction was present ...
Plasma histamine levels in laminitic horses and in horses treated with a corticosteroid.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    November 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 9 716-719 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1991.tb01069.x
Rautschka R, Stanek C, Knezevic PF.In seven sound horses histamine plasma levels were evaluated by means of a radioenzymatic method using the enzyme histamine-N-methyltransferase (mean = 4.46 nmol/l, SD = 1.55 nmol/l). Histamine levels of laminitic horses were significantly higher (n = 11; mean = 12.46 nmol/l, SD = 3.24 nmol/l). In three sound horses plasma histamine levels were determined over a two week period following a double administration of 10 mg dexamethasone-21-isonicotinate/100 kg body weight. Histamine levels remained within the range of sound control horses.
[Adenoma of the pigmented epithelium of the iris with endothelialization and descemetization in the horse].
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    November 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 9 652-659
Daicker B, Gywat L, Keller M, Spiess B, Brückner R.The authors describe peculiar tumors with brown-white piebald anterior surface, which had grown bilaterally from the corpora nigra (C.N.) of an adult horse and occluded the pupils. The surgical procedure for removing the larger tumor and the postoperative treatment are described. The findings by light and electron microscopy suggest that the tumor represent a so-called adenoma of the iris pigment epithelium. The white patches on its surface consist of newly formed Descemet-like material produced by displaced corneal endothelial cells, which have probably grown on the tumor after contact with t...
Influence of digoxin followed by dopamine on the cardiovascular depression during a standard halothane anaesthesia in dorsally recumbent, ventilated ponies.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    October 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 8 585-593 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1991.tb01053.x
Gasthuys F, De Moor A, Parmentier D.The influence of digoxin (0.01 mg/kg) given as an intravenous bolus followed by dopamine at different infusion rates (1.25, 2.5 and 5.0 micrograms/kg/min) on the cardiovascular depression during a standard halothane anaesthesia was studied in dorsally recumbent ventilated ponies. Preanaesthetic digitalization induced no clear positive cardiovascular effects over 30 minutes, except for non-significant increases in mean pulmonary artery pressure and total pulmonary resistance. These changes were probably time-related. No specific side-effects related to the fast intravenous digitalization were n...
Nerve growth factor-like activity detected in equine peripheral blood after running exercise.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    August 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 7 557-559 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1991.tb01048.x
Matsuda H, Koyama H, Oikawa M, Yoshihara T, Kaneko M.Addition of sera, collected from Thoroughbred horses after sprint exercise, induced significant neurite outgrowth from chick embryo dorsal root ganglia after a 24-hour culture. The nerve growth factor (NGF)-like activity was detected in sera collected immediately, or 1 hour or more, after the exercise. These findings suggest a possible role of serum NGF-like activity under stress conditions (running exercise) of horses.
Influence of dopamine and dobutamine on the cardiovascular depression during a standard halothane anaesthesia in dorsally recumbent, ventilated ponies.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    August 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 7 494-500 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1991.tb01040.x
Gasthuys F, de Moor A, Parmentier D.The influence of different rates of dopamine and dobutamine on the cardiovascular depression during a standard halothane anesthesia was studied in dorsally recumbent ventilated ponies. Haemodynamic and respiratory responses were investigated by means of cardiac output (CO) determination (thermodilution technique), mean systemic (MAP) and pulmonary artery pressure (MPAP) (direct intravascular method) and arterial blood analysis (blood gases and packed cell volume). An important cardiopulmonary depression characterized by decreases (55% of the standing values) in CO, cardiac index (CI), MAP, MPA...

Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    April 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 3 153-156 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1991.tb00996.x
Raekallio M, Vainio O, Scheinin M.Single doses of the alpha 2-adrenergic sedative-analgesic drug, detomidine (10 micrograms/kg, n = 7; 20 micrograms/kg, n = 9), were administered IV to adult horses. Plasma concentrations of adrenaline, noradrenaline, the catecholamine metabolites 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol (DHPG) and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), and cortisol were determined before the medication and 30 minutes after it. The plasma concentrations of noradrenaline and the catecholamine metabolites decreased significantly after administration of both 10 micrograms/kg and 20 micrograms/kg of detomidine. Plasma adrenaline...
Lobeline-induced hyperpnea in equids. Comparison with rebreathing bag and exercise.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    March 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 2 148-152
Art T, Desmecht D, Amory H, Lekeux P.In order to facilitate lung auscultation, a transitory hyperpnea may be obtained by lobeline administration, use of a rebreathing bag or exercise. The effect of these three methods on the pulmonary function were studied and compared in 5 healthy ponies. Respiratory airflow and tidal volume were measured with a pneumotachograph Nr. 5 and pleural pressure with the esophageal balloon catheter technique. Pulmonary function values were measured before, during and after the hyperpnea induced by (i) lobeline, (ii) rebreathing and (iii) exercise. Lobeline administration induced an hyperpnea due to bot...
