Extracellular ATP can activate autonomic signal transduction pathways in cultured equine sweat gland epithelial cells. Changes in intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) were monitored in a cell line that was derived from the equine sweat gland epithelium. ADP induces desensitisation of equine platelet aggregation responses: studies using ADP beta S, a stable analogue of ADP. Pre-incubation of equine platelets in platelet-rich plasma with adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP) induced a reduction in aggregation responsiveness to subsequent additions of ADP. The incidence of sarcocysts was examined in postural, propulsive and respiratory muscles from 74 horses ranging in age from mid-gestation to 14 years post-natal. In vitro titration of muscle homogenates has been used to assess muscle buffering capacity (beta mtitr) in a variety of species. In the present study, factors likely to affect the estimation of beta mtitr were investigated. Also, values of beta mtitr from normal Thoroughbred horses are presented. The location of carbonic anhydrase III (CA-III) in frozen sections of biopsies of Thoroughbred horse skeletal muscle was studied.
