Ponies reared with minimal or no exposure to anthelmintics were surveyed for intestinal helminths in order to estimate prevalence and intensity of parasite populations unaltered by frequent exposure to anthelmintics. Prevalence and control of benzimidazole-resistant small strongyles on German thoroughbred studs. The prevalence of benzimidazole-resistant small strongyles was determined in a survey, conducted on 14 thoroughbred studs, which compared the faecal egg counts of groups of horses before and after treatment with the recommended doses of cambendazole (20 mg kg-1 b.w.) or febantel (6 mg kg-1 b.w.). Prevalence of benzimidazole-resistant small strongyles in horses in a southeastern Pennsylvania practice. A survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of benzimidazole (BZ)-resistant small strongyles in horses in a southeastern Pennsylvania practice. Resistant parasites were found in 291 of 342 horses surveyed. Integrated control of Strongylus vulgaris infection in horses using ivermectin. An attempt was made to control or eliminate Strongylus vulgaris from a closed group of three horses at pasture near Perth, Western Australia, by dosing with ivermectin on four occasions during the time of year when it was believed that environmental conditions would eliminate all the non-parasitic stages of that species. At necropsy, five months after the last dose of anthelmintic and after continually grazing the same pastures, no S vulgaris or arterial lesions were found in those horses and S edentatus, Draschia megastoma and Habronema species were also almost completely eliminated.

Ivermectin and an ivermectin-penicillin combination: a comparison of anthelmintic efficacy in horses. Ivermectin given IM at 200 micrograms/kg, alone or in combination with procaine penicillin G at 600 IU/kg, to 20 randomly selected young horses of various breeds reduced fecal strongyle egg counts from 400-4100 epg (avg greater than 1000) pretreatment to zero 7 days posttreatment.
