Dietary fat and exercise conditioning effect on metabolic parameters in the horse.

After 3 weeks of conditioning at each interval, diet effects were evaluated by trotting all horses at 3.2 m/sec for 6 hours. Pre- and posttrotting responses were measured in muscle and liver glycogen, serum long-chain fatty acids, serum electrolytes, serum enzymes, serum cholesterol, plasma glucose, packed cell volume and hemoglobin. Webb AI, Weaver BM.Seventeen horses were dissected and their organs and tissues weighed. The results of these dissections are presented together with comparisons of the data with that already available in the literature. Predictive equations for organs and tissue weights are also given which were derived by comparison of linear and allometric regression models using 4 different body weight indices.

DAHL O, PERSSON KA.The quality of the depot fat in ruminants is only slightly affected by the dietary fat. Non-ruminants like pigs, however, deposit ingested unsaturated fatty acids selectively. This may give rise to a depot fat with a higher iodine value than the dietary fat.
