Topic:Comparative Study
Comparative studies in equine research involve the systematic analysis of different horse breeds, management practices, or physiological responses to identify variations and similarities. These studies are instrumental in understanding how different factors influence health, performance, and behavior in horses. Common areas of comparison include genetic traits, nutritional requirements, disease resistance, and response to training. By evaluating these differences, researchers can develop targeted strategies for breeding, healthcare, and training. This page aggregates peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that focus on the methodologies, findings, and implications of comparative studies in the context of equine science.
A comparative study of blood gas tensions, oxygen affinity and red cell 2,3 DPG concentrations in foetal and maternal blood in the mare, cow and sow. 1. Blood gas tensions, pH, PCV, O(2) affinity and red cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (DPG) levels have been measured in uterine and umbilical blood in conscious cows and mares with indwelling vascular catheters and in sows under sodium pentobarbitone anaesthesia.2. Large P(O2) gradients (20-24 mmHg) were observed between the uterine and umbilical venous blood in the cow and pig, while in the mare the corresponding P(O2) difference was only 2.7 +/- 1.7 mmHg. Alterations in maternal arterial P(O2) did not affect the large vein-to-vein P(O2) difference in either ruminant or pig.3. In the cow the pre...
Photooxidation of horse and sperm-whale myoglobin sensitized by the heme group. The irradiation of horse and sperm-whale Fe” or Fez’ myoglobins with visible light
showed that axial ligands that render the heme diamagnetic (e.g. 02, CO or CN-) endow the
hemoproteins with a marked photosensitivity. In contrast, high-spin myoglobins are unaffected by
visible light. These findings appear to be of general validity for all hemo-proteins and are in agreement
with the involvment of the triplet state of the heme as the reactive intermediate. In all cases, the overall
photoprocess occurs within a very narrow spatial range, leading to specific modification of these
photoox...
Reproductive physiology of the stallion. I. Spermatogenesis and testis composition. The cycle of the seminiferous epithelium of the stallion was
divided into eight stages, using as criteria the presence of meiotic divi-
sions, shape of the spermatid nuclei and location of spermatids with
elongated nuclei in the tubule. The mean frequencies ofstages 1 to 8 were
16\m=.\9, 14\m=.\9, 3\m=.\2, 15\m=.\8, 7\m=.\4, 13\m=.\5, 12\m=.\6 and 15\m=.\7%, respectively. The
duration of one cycle of the seminiferous epithelium was 12\m=.\2 days
(S.E.\m=+-\0\m=.\1) as determined by injecting a single dose of 700 \g=m\Ciof
[3H]thymidine into each spermatic artery of six stallions and rem...
Passive cutaneous anaphylaxis and its enhancement by normal IgG. Rats were injected intradermally with rabbit anti-ovalbumin serum and 3 hours later were challenged intravenously with ovalbumin and Evans Blue dye. Inflammatory lesions were produced within 20 minutes and their size was markedly dose-dependent. Attempts were made to interfere with this passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) by admixture of normal IgG with the rabbit anti-ovalbumin to measure the relative tissue binding affinities of IgG from various species. It was found that normal IgG from any of the species tested had an enhancing effect on PCA in rats. These immunoglobulins serially arranged...
Limitations of immunofluorescence tests in the diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis. The relative value of heterophil agglutinins (HA) and of specific EBV antibodies in the diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis (IM) was assessed in 108 cases of the disease and in 280 controls. Among the 108 cases 93 were HA-positive by sheep cells in at least one of their sera, while 15 were HA-negative by the same test. Among the 280 controls false-positive HA tests were not encountered except in eight cases with the horse cell microtitre tests. With one of the two slide tests at least two false-positive tests and 12 false-negative tests were also found but these sera had low titres in microt...
