Endoscopic treatment of suspected infectious intertubercular bursitis in a horse. A 9-year-old gelding was evaluated because of a 30-day history of mild intermittent left forelimb lameness. The only detectable abnormality was mild atrophy of the musculature of the proximal portion of the left forelimb. The cause of the lameness could not be determined. The horse was discharged from the hospital, but was reexamined 6 weeks later because of worsening of the lameness. Effects of omeprazole on healing of naturally-occurring gastric ulcers in thoroughbred racehorses. Evaluation of the equine respiratory system using physical examination and endoscopy. Defining respiratory disease is not always easy in the horse because auscultation with accurate interpretation of lung sounds can be difficult. However, performing a thorough physical examination, including rebreathing auscultation and percussion of the thorax and sinuses, is very useful in elucidating the problem. Endoscopic examination of the upper respiratory system is also critical for definitively diagnosing certain conditions.
Advances in diagnostic techniques for horses with colic. Recent advances in the use of abdominal ultrasound, endoscopy, laparoscopy, radiography, and peritoneal fluid analysis have contributed to the evaluation of horses with colic. Naturally occurring persistent and asymptomatic infection of the guttural pouches of horses with Streptococcus equi. During an outbreak of strangles on a farm with approximately 1500 horses, the spread of Streptococcus equi infection was monitored by repeated nasopharyngeal swabbing and culture. Laryngospasm, dysphagia, and emaciation associated with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis in a horse. An 18-month-old Quarter Horse gelding was examined because of weight loss and dysphagia of 1 month's duration. Clinical signs included lethargy, dehydration, ptyalism, and probable aspiration pneumonia. Severe dyspnea and cyanosis were evident after mild exercise. Obstructive pulmonary disease in 18 horses at summer pasture. The clinical features of 18 cases of summer pasture associated obstructive pulmonary disease were reviewed.
