Influence of feeding schedule on the absorption of orally administered flunixin in the horse. The effects of access to hay and of restricted feeding on the pharmacokinetics of flunixin administered orally to six healthy ponies were compared in a cross-over study. The detection of African horse sickness virus antigens and antibodies in young Equidae. Four ponies were each inoculated with a different serotype of African horse sickness virus (AHSV) which had been passaged through cell culture in order to achieve attenuation. Evaluation of some prophylactic therapies for the idiopathic headshaker syndrome. Follow-up of 28 horses with third metacarpal unicortical stress fractures following treatment with osteostixis. The results of 31 intracortical dorsal metacarpal stress fractures in 28 horses following unicortical osteostixis were reviewed. The incidence was predominately in the middle third of the lateral aspect of the left metacarpus, and males were affected more commonly. Formalin-fixed and Paraplast-embedded tissue samples of 42 aborted equine fetuses were examined by polymerase chain reaction for the presence of equine herpesvirus DNA. The used set of primers was located in the glycoprotein 13 open reading frame and allowed the amplification of both EHV 1 und EHV 4. By cleaving pattern analysis after Hinf I digestion EHV 1 could be distinguished from EHV 4. In 9 of the cases investigated EHV 1-DNA was detected. Crystallographic studies of a calcium binding lysozyme from equine milk at 2.5 A resolution. The crystal structure of a calcium binding equine lysozyme has been determined at 2.5 A resolution by means of molecular replacement. The energy minimized equine lysozyme as the starting model, was refined with the molecular dynamics program, X-PLOR, and the R factor of the current model was found to be 24% without any water molecules. The conformation of the calcium binding loop is similar to that of alpha-lactalbumin. The profiles of backbone atomic displacements throughout the lysozyme and alpha-lactalbumin superfamilies are comparable as well as their homologous tertiary structures.

Fecalith impaction in four miniature foals. Four miniature foals admitted with signs of progressive nonresponsive abdominal pain and no fecal production had fecalith impaction of the small colon. Duration of clinical signs ranged from 10 hours to 5 days. Removal of the fecalith via small colon enterotomy was a successful treatment in all 4 cases. Miniature foals may be predisposed to fecalith impaction of the small colon. If a miniature foal has signs of progressive nonresponsive abdominal pain, fecalith impaction needs to be considered.
