Actinobacillus spp. and related bacteria in infected wounds of humans bitten by horses and sheep. We describe the isolation of Actinobacillus lignieresii and an A. equuli-like bacterium from an infected horse-bite wound in a 22-year-old stable foreman and A. suis from a bite injury in a 35-year-old man who had been attacked by a horse. Blood gas analyses on equine blood: required correction factors [see comment]. Correction factors have been determined to obtain the best estimates of PO2, PCO2 and pH in equine blood with standard blood gas and pH electrodes. There was a significant difference between the PO2 readings for tonometred blood of most horses and the equilibrating gas. Thus, if the PO2 electrode is calibrated with a gas, an electrode correction factor should be obtained by tonometring a blood sample from each horse. Morphine and etorphine: XIV. Detection by ELISA in equine urine. We have raised antibodies to morphine and etorphine and developed one-step enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for these drugs as part of a panel of post race tests for drugs in racing horses. Measurements of the accuracy of clinical diagnoses of equine neurologic disease. Parameters for the accuracy of clinical diagnosis of neurologic diseases in the horse were determined from 210 horses in which a definitive pathologic diagnosis was confirmed. A technique was developed in which the accessory sex glands of stallions were visualized with transrectal ultrasonography during ejaculation. Bronchoalveolar lavage findings in horses with exercise intolerance. Significant differences were detected by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) between horses racing successfully and those showing exercise intolerance. Neutrophil percentage, haemosiderophage percentage and total bacterial numbers were significantly elevated in horses with exercise intolerance. The influence of detomidine and epinephrine on heart rate, arterial blood pressure, and cardiac arrhythmia in horses. Pharmacologic treatment of priapism in two horses. Benztropine mesylate was used successfully to treat priapism that developed during anesthesia in 2 horses. After IV injection, there was a rapid resolution of signs in both horses, and no side effects were observed. The choice of an effective method to treat priapism is challenging because precise causes in most patients have not been well-defined. Traumatic injuries involving tendons of the distal limbs in horses: a retrospective study of 55 cases.
