Topic:Erythrocytes

Erythrocytes, or red blood cells, are the most abundant cell type in the equine circulatory system and are responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body. They also facilitate the return of carbon dioxide from tissues to the lungs for exhalation. Equine erythrocytes are characterized by their biconcave disc shape, which enhances their flexibility and surface area for gas exchange. The lifespan of erythrocytes in horses is approximately 140-150 days, after which they are removed from circulation and broken down, primarily in the spleen. Variations in erythrocyte count, size, and morphology can indicate various health conditions, including anemia, dehydration, and certain metabolic disorders. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the structure, function, and clinical implications of erythrocytes in equine health.
Acute hemolytic anemia induced by oral administration of indole in ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    May 1, 1991   Volume 52, Issue 5 748-753
Paradis MR, Breeze RG, Laegreid WW, Bayly WM, Counts DF.Eight ponies were allotted to 2 groups of 4. Group-1 ponies (1-4) were given 0.2 g of indole/kg of body weight orally and group-2 ponies (5 to 8) were given 0.1 g of indole/kg. Various physical, hematologic, and physiologic measurements were obtained after administration of indole. Intravascular hemolysis and hemoglobinuria were detected in both groups within 24 hours of dosing. Hemolysis was reflected by decreases in PCV, hemoglobin concentration, and RBC count, and an increase in indirect bilirubin. Erythrocyte fragility appeared to increase in both groups at 8 hours after dosing and peaked ...

Parasitology research    January 1, 1991   Volume 77, Issue 2 177-179 doi: 10.1007/BF00935433
Bhushan C, Müller I, Friedhoff KT.A rapid and simple method for concentrating leucocyte-free Babesia caballi-infected erythrocytes from in vitro cultures is described. Infected erythrocytes amounted to at least 95% of all red cells obtained.
Exercise induced alterations in the serum muscle enzymes, erythrocyte potassium and plasma constituents following feed withdrawal or furosemide and sodium bicarbonate administration in the horse.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    January 1, 1991   Volume 5, Issue 1 40-46 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.1991.tb00929.x
Freestone JF, Gossett K, Carlson GP, Church G.Six thoroughbreds were used in each of three trials to examine the effect of potassium depletion on exercise-associated muscle damage. Horses were exercised after a control period (Treatment 1), a 72-hour fast (Treatment 2), and furosemide and sodium bicarbonate (Treatment 3). During the preexercise period, feed withdrawal for 72 hours caused decreases in body weight, plasma sodium, chloride, and serum calcium. There were no changes in plasma potassium, erythrocyte potassium, or serum creatine phosphokinase (CK) activity. Furosemide and sodium bicarbonate administration resulted in a decrease ...
Evaluation of an electronic device used as a quick screening method to detect changes in the red cell content of the blood in horses participating in endurance trail rides.
Veterinary research communications    January 1, 1991   Volume 15, Issue 4 309-314 doi: 10.1007/BF00430036
de Waal A, Potgieter FJ.Dehydration, to varying degrees, will inevitably occur in horses participating in endurance trail rides. This water loss is directly related to the amount of body water lost through evaporative cooling, that in turn being related to the amount and rate of work performed, and to the environmental temperature and humidity. An electronic apparatus that can substitute for the conventional and time-consuming venous haematocrit was developed to measure the animals' hydration status. The mechanism of this electrometer is based upon the relationship between the red cell content and the electrical cond...
Low dose calcium heparin in horses: plasma heparin concentrations, effects on red blood cell mass and on coagulation variables.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1991   Volume 23, Issue 1 37-43 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1991.tb02711.x
Gerhards H.Low dose calcium heparin was administered subcutaneously at 12 hourly intervals to six healthy horses at an initial dose of 150 iu of heparin/kg bodyweight (bwt) and at a maintenance dose of 120 iu/kg bwt. All injections were given at 0900 and 2100 h. Blood samples for monitoring plasma heparin concentrations were obtained prior to, at 2 hourly intervals for 84 h (treatment period), and at Hours 24, 32, 48 and 96 of the control period. Blood samples for monitoring red blood cell (RBC) mass, plasma antithrombin III activity (AT III), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and thrombin ti...
Clinical signs, laboratory changes and toxicokinetics of brodifacoum in the horse. Boermans HJ, Johnstone I, Black WD, Murphy M.Six horses gavaged with a commercial brodifacoum (BDF)-containing bait (Talone) at a dosage of 0.125 mg of BDF/kg of body weight showed weight loss, severe hypocoagulability and hemogram alterations. Four of the horses became depressed and anorectic; one required vitamin K1 therapy. Increases in clotting times were observed at 24 h in the partial thromboplastin time (PTT) followed by the thrombotest (TBT) and one-stage prothrombin time (PT) at 48 h. Elevated mean PTT, PT and TBT were observed from days 4 to 8 (p less than 0.05) with levels returning to pretreatment levels by day 12. Maximum pr...
[Several physiologic aspects of the reactions of foals in the first three days after weaning].
Berliner und Munchener tierarztliche Wochenschrift    October 1, 1990   Volume 103, Issue 10 348-351
Dusek J, Skalický J.Changes have been observed in nine foals, six months of age, after weaning for the time of three days, namely in the intake of drinking water, hematocrit, sedimentation of erythrocytes and three minerals Na+, K+ and Cl-. Foals respond to weaning immediately, lowering significantly their consumption of drinking water and increasing high significance of Na+ and Cl-. Changes of level K+, hematocrit and sedimentation don't show any significant variations. The results reached are to be considered as an introductory information for further inquiry on the more extensive methodical basis.
Microcytosis, hypoferremia, hypoferritemia, and hypertransferrinemia in standardbred foals from birth to 4 months of age.
American journal of veterinary research    August 1, 1990   Volume 51, Issue 8 1198-1205
Kohn CW, Jacobs RM, Knight D, Hueston W, Gabel AA, Reed SM.At birth, 24 Standardbred foals were assigned at random to 1 of 2 groups and were given a placebo supplement (group 1) or an iron supplement (248 mg of iron/treatment; group 2). Foals were given iron supplement or placebo 4 times during the second and third weeks after birth. Hematologic variables and general health were monitored until foals were 4 months old. Mean PCV in foals of both groups decreased during the first 2 weeks after birth, but values remained within adult horse reference ranges. During the first 6 weeks after birth, foal erythrocytes were smaller than adult horse erythrocytes...
The changes of antioxidative enzyme activities in equine erythrocytes following exercise.
Nihon juigaku zasshi. The Japanese journal of veterinary science    August 1, 1990   Volume 52, Issue 4 759-765 doi: 10.1292/jvms1939.52.759
Ono K, Inui K, Hasegawa T, Matsuki N, Watanabe H, Takagi S, Hasegawa A, Tomoda I.The change in activities of 3 major antioxidative enzymes in equine erythrocytes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSHpx), and catalase, was investigated in order to evaluate the effect of exercise. Blood samples were obtained from 11 thoroughbred horses before and immediately after vigorous exercise which induced the increase of plasma lipid peroxide (Lpx) concentration from 1.16 +/- 0.40 nmol/ml to 1.29 +/- 0.34 nmol/ml. Following the exercise, the GSHpx activity in erythrocytes was significantly reduced from 69 +/- 10 IU/gHb to 65 +/- 8 IU/gHb, whereas SOD and catalase ac...
Effects of exercise and adrenaline on equine erythrocyte ATP content.
Research in veterinary science    July 1, 1990   Volume 49, Issue 1 77-81
Snow DH, Martin V.To investigate the claim that equine erythrocytes released from the spleen are older cells than those found at rest in the circulation, the 2,3, diphosphoglycerate (2,3 DPG), adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and creatine concentration of erythrocytes before and following splenic emptying were examined. Normal values for thoroughbreds (43) and ponies (10) at rest were established. Following either exercise or intravenous injection of adrenaline in six thoroughbreds, there was an increase in erythrocyte creatine content and a decrease in ATP concentration. Exercise produced a slight increase in 2,3 ...
Decreased erythrocyte potassium concentration associated with exercise-related myopathy in horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    April 15, 1990   Volume 196, Issue 8 1259-1261
Bain FT, Merritt AM.To investigate the possibility that a disorder of potassium balance may have a role in the development of equine rhabdomyolysis, the potassium concentration within erythrocytes (RBC [K+]) and plasma (P [K+]) was measured in 3 groups of horses: group 1, eight 2-year-old fillies that had postexercise muscle soreness within 48 hours of sample collection; group 2, ten 2-year-old fillies subjected to identical management and training conditions (as fillies of group 1) and that did not have signs of myopathy; and group 3, 32 yearlings of both sexes on the farm of origin of groups 1 and 2 that were p...
High-performance liquid chromatography determination of erythrocyte membrane phospholipid composition in several animal species.
American journal of veterinary research    April 1, 1990   Volume 51, Issue 4 577-580
Engen RL, Clark CL.High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to determine the phospholipid (PL) composition of ovine, equine, bovine, porcine, and canine RBC membranes. Procedural modifications of established techniques provided for separation of 7 PL within a 15- to 20-minute sample run. Significant (P less than 0.05) differences were detected in RBC membrane PL composition among the various species. The concern for physiologic properties associated with hemolysis and/or sedimentation rate must include evaluation of differences in the PL bilayer structure.
Hepatocellular carcinoma associated with erythrocytosis and hypoglycemia in a yearling filly.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    February 1, 1990   Volume 196, Issue 3 465-467
Roby KA, Beech J, Bloom JC, Black M.A yearling Arabian-type filly with a history of poor growth, erythrocytosis, hypoglycemia, and high liver enzyme activities was admitted to the hospital for evaluation. Three days after admission, the filly collapsed, deteriorated rapidly despite treatment, and was euthanatized. A metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma with capsular rupture and hemoperitoneum were found at necropsy. Primary liver tumors are rare in horses, and hepatocellular carcinoma has been reported in only 1 other horse. The systemic manifestations of the tumor in this filly included weakness, weight loss, inappetence, erythr...
Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia in eight horses.
The Veterinary record    January 20, 1990   Volume 126, Issue 3 51-53
Mair TS, Taylor FG, Hillyer MH.Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia was diagnosed in eight horses on the basis of a positive Coomb's test. The disease was considered to be idiopathic in three cases and secondary to another condition in five. The clinical signs included dullness and depression, pyrexia, jaundice and haemoglobinuria. In addition to anaemia, haematological evaluation commonly revealed auto-agglutination of red cells and anisocytosis; reticulocytosis and an increased mean corpuscular volume were less commonly observed. Four horses were successfully treated with dexamethasone, but the other four were destroyed or died ...
Use of erythrocyte fragility profiles for monitoring immune-mediated haemolysis in horses.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1990   Volume 48, Issue 1 138-140
Taylor FG, Cooke BJ.The fragility of erythrocytes is easily demonstrated by their ability to withstand osmotic swelling and lysis in solutions of increasingly hypotonic saline. In healthy animals a plot of percentage haemolysis against increasing hypotonicity produces a sigmoid curve. Using the same data a derivative curve calculated from haemolytic increments shows a normal distribution of fragility within samples. In enhanced fragility due to immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia, these profiles of haemolysis are markedly altered and the derivative curve becomes multiphasic, indicating the presence of subpopulatio...
Immunopathogenesis of equine infectious anemia lentivirus disease.
Developments in biological standardization    January 1, 1990   Volume 72 31-37
McGuire TC, O'Rourke KI, Perryman LE.Virus replication and subsequent viremia are clearly correlated with clinical disease in EIAV infected horses. Termination of viremia is the result of specific immune responses. Recurrences of viremia are associated with antigenic variation of neutralization-sensitive epitopes. Immunosuppression experiments indicate that the eventual control of EIAV and development of carriers is mediated by the immune system. Even though the immune response to EIAV has a protective effect, immune responses also cause some of the lesions. At least one part of the anemia, erythrocyte destruction, is caused by t...
Diurnal changes in the haemoglobin level, red blood cell number and mean corpuscular haemoglobin in foals during the first 13 weeks of life and in their lactating mothers.
Comparative biochemistry and physiology. A, Comparative physiology    January 1, 1990   Volume 96, Issue 1 151-155 doi: 10.1016/0300-9629(90)90057-y
Komosa M, Flisińska-Bojanowska A, Gill J.1. In six foals and their mothers (of Standard breed) diurnal changes in the haemoglobin level, red blood cell number and mean corpuscular haemoglobin during the first 13 weeks of foal life were studied. 2. Studies begun when a foal reached 7 days of age and were repeated every two weeks till 13 weeks of foal life. Blood was taken every 6 hr in foals and every 4 hr in mares. 3. No diurnal rhythmicity in parameters studied either in foals or in mares was found. 4. Decrease of haemoglobin level in lactating mares (14.0-12.5 g/100 ml) without changes in red blood cell number were observed. Mean c...
[Heteroimmune hemolytic anemia associated with antilymphocyte globulin treatment in a patient with aplastic anemia].
Medicina    January 1, 1990   Volume 50, Issue 4 361-364
Goldztein S, Carreras Vescio LA, Salamone HJ, Calahonra R, Kohan AI, Sánchez Avalos JC.A 24-year-old male patient with a severe aplastic anemia (SAA) was treated with equine-antilymphocyte globulin (ALG). As complication of this treatment he developed a severe heteroimmune hemolytic anemia mediated by anti-species pan-agglutinin antibodies present in ALG. In spite of the fact that ALG is absorbed with red-cell stroma and platelets to remove anti-erythrocyte and anti-platelet contaminating antibodies, often only partial absorption is achieved, and the remaining antibodies are passively acquired by the recipient. Neutropenia and especially thrombocytopenia are usual complications ...
Hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase activity in tissues and hypoxanthine concentrations in plasma and CSF of the horse in comparison with other species.
Comparative biochemistry and physiology. B, Comparative biochemistry    January 1, 1990   Volume 97, Issue 3 591-596 doi: 10.1016/0305-0491(90)90164-o
Harkness RA, McCreanor GM, Allsop J, Snow DH, Harris RC, Rossdale PO, Ousey JC.1. Plasma hypoxanthine and xanthine concentrations are very low in the horse and low in rat, mouse and greyhound compared to concentrations in beagles, man, sheep and rabbit. 2. Activities in erythrocytes of the main enzyme metabolizing hypoxanthine, hypoxanthine phosphori-bosyltransferase, show a similar pattern (Tax et al., 1976, Comp. Biochem. Physiol. 54B, 209-212); thus low activities have been found where plasma concentrations were low. 3. Hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase activities in horse tissue other than erythrocytes are similar to those in man and rabbit with high activities ...
Transbilayer movement of phosphatidylserine in nonhuman erythrocytes: evidence that the aminophospholipid transporter is a ubiquitous membrane protein.
Biochemistry    December 12, 1989   Volume 28, Issue 25 9680-9685 doi: 10.1021/bi00451a021
Connor J, Schroit AJ.A 31-32-kDa integral membrane protein has been previously identified in erythrocytes as the protein most likely to be responsible for the transbilayer movement of phosphatidylserine (PS) [Connor & Schroit (1988) Biochemistry 27, 848-851]. Using similar techniques, we have identified analogous proteins of identical molecular weights in bovine, equine, ovine, porcine, canine, caprine, and rhesus red blood cells. Similar to human red blood cells, all of the mammalian cells were able to specifically transport an exogenously supplied fluorescent PS analogue from their outer-to-inner membrane le...
A hemolytic assay for the measurement of equine complement.
Veterinary immunology and immunopathology    November 30, 1989   Volume 23, Issue 1-2 129-137 doi: 10.1016/0165-2427(89)90115-3
Reis KJ.A hemolytic assay was developed for the measurement of functional equine complement activity. The assay utilizes antibody sensitized chicken erythrocytes as the target cell and was specific for classical pathway (antibody dependent) complement activity. The assay was found to be reproducible and more sensitive than previous reports using other species of target cells. Total serum complement (CH50) values were determined for five mares and their foals and followed over a period of 3 months.
Changes in circulating equine erythrocytes induced by brief, high-speed exercise.
Equine veterinary journal    November 1, 1989   Volume 21, Issue 6 444-446 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1989.tb02193.x
Smith JE, Erickson HH, Debowes RM, Clark M.Five horses were exercised at 10m/sec at a 3 degree incline for 2 mins. Packed cell volume, erythrocyte count, haemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular volume, plasma protein, total white cell count and lymphocytes increased significantly in blood samples taken after exercise, compared with those taken before exercise; but mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration decreased. Erythrocytes were more resistant to osmotic stress after exercise, but their shape and degree of deformity were unaffected by exercise.
Susceptibility of erythrocytes from several animal species to Vibrio vulnificus hemolysin.
FEMS microbiology letters    October 15, 1989   Volume 52, Issue 3 251-255 doi: 10.1016/0378-1097(89)90206-1
Yamanaka H, Shimatani S, Tanaka M, Katsu T, Ono B, Shinoda S.The hemolytic activity of Vibrio vulnificus hemolysin (VVH) against erythrocytes from several animal species (sheep, horse, cow, rabbit, chicken) was investigated. VVH was active against erythrocytes from all species, but the amount of VVH causing 50% hemolysis under identical conditions (hemolytic susceptibility to VVH) differed. The degree of 125I-labeled VVH (125I-VVH) binding to each erythrocyte species correlated with the susceptibility of the cells to hemolysis. However, marked differences in the binding ability of 125I-VVH were not observed against liposomes constructed with lipids from...
Complement activity and selected hematologic variables in newborn foals fed bovine colostrum.
American journal of veterinary research    September 1, 1989   Volume 50, Issue 9 1532-1536
Lavoie JP, Spensley MS, Smith BP, Bowling AT, Morse S.Serum complement activity and selected hematologic variables were evaluated in 5 newborn foals fed bovine colostrum (principal group) and 6 foals allowed to nurse their dam (control group). Also, bovine colostrum was evaluated for anti-equine antibodies. Precolostral serum hemolytic and conglutinating complement activities were low and increased similarly in foals of both groups to reach adult values between 1 and 3 weeks after birth. Bovine colostrum strongly agglutinated, but did not hemolyse principal foals' RBC and blood containing all known equine blood group alloantigens. Hemolysis was n...

Effects of migrating Gasterophilus intestinalis larvae (Diptera: Gasterophilidae) on the mouth of the horse.
Veterinary parasitology    June 1, 1989   Volume 31, Issue 3-4 317-331 doi: 10.1016/0304-4017(89)90081-2
Cogley TP.Lesions were formed in the mouth of the horse by first- and second-stage Gasterophilus intestinalis larvae. The lesions resulted as larvae burrowed through the top millimeter of the tongue and then became embedded in the interdental gingiva. Appearance of the lesion was dependent on the degree of larval burrowing activity and healing that had taken place. Active tunneling production occurred at the posterior end of the lesion. Extensive change in configuration and color was apparent along the longer lesions with active larvae. Virtually all tissue in the path of the larvae was removed while fo...
Nonequivalence of the two subunits of horse erythrocyte glutathione transferase in their reaction with sulfhydryl reagents.
The Journal of biological chemistry    April 5, 1989   Volume 264, Issue 10 5462-5467
Ricci G, Del Boccio G, Pennelli A, Aceto A, Whitehead EP, Federici G.Glutathione transferase (EC 2.5.1.18) from horse erythrocytes has been purified and some molecular and kinetic properties have been investigated. It appears to be a dimeric protein composed of subunits of about 23 kDa, indistinguishable either in sodium dodecyl sulfate or in urea electrophoresis. Amino acid composition, substrate specificities, sensitivity to inhibitors, CD spectra, and immunological studies provide evidence that the horse enzyme is related to the pi class transferases. This enzyme has only two reactive thiol groups/dimer whose integrity appears to be essential for the activit...

A monoclonal antibody against horse kidney (Na+ + K+)-ATPase inhibits sodium pump and E2K to E1 conversion of (Na+ + K+)-ATPase from outside of the cell membrane.
Biochimica et biophysica acta    February 2, 1989   Volume 994, Issue 2 104-113 doi: 10.1016/0167-4838(89)90149-0
Satoh K, Nakao T, Nagai F, Kano I, Nakagawa A, Ushiyama K, Urayama O, Hara Y, Nakao M.Monoclonal antibodies against horse kidney outer medulla (Na+ + K+)-ATPase were prepared. One of these antibodies (M45-80), was identified as an IgM, recognized the alpha subunit of the enzyme. M45-80 had the following effects on horse kidney (Na+ + K+)-ATPase: (1) it inhibited the enzyme activity by 50% in 140 mM Na+ and by 80% in 8.3 mM Na+; (2) it increased the Na+ concentration necessary for half-maximal activation (K0.5 for Na+) from 12.0 to 57.6 mM, but did not affect K0.5 for K+; (3) it slightly increased the K+-dependent p-nitrophenylphosphatase (K-pNPPase) activity; (4) it inhibited p...
