Extramedullary plasmacytoma in a horse with ptyalism and dysphagia. A Clydesdale mare was examined for weight loss, inappetence, ptyalism, and dysphagia. Antiheparin activity of plasma of different species of vertebrates depends to a large extent on contents of low density lipoproteins (LDL). Concentration decrease of corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG) in plasma of the mare throughout pregnancy. A significant decrease of CBG binding capacity in plasma of the mare throughout pregnancy was demonstrated using equilibrium dialysis and gel equilibration methods. As indicated with immunoelectrophoresis experiments, the pregnancy related fall of CBG binding capacity was linked to an actual decrease in blood CBG concentration. The influence of plasma proteins on erythrocyte aggregation was studied in a population of young thoroughbred racehorses, using the 60 minute erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) with and without haematocrit standardisation. Granulomatous colitis associated with small strongyle larvae in a horse. Horses presented with chronic weight loss are difficult to manage clinically. A diagnosis of granulomatous colitis due to mucosal stages of cyathostomes (small strongyles) should be considered in those cases exhibiting weight loss, intermittent diarrhea, hypoalbuminemia, increased serum globulins, and low fecal egg counts. Effect of age on anion gap in clinically normal Quarter Horses. Anion gap [AG = (Na + K) - (Cl + HCO3)] was determined in Quarter Horses: 10 clinically normal foals 0.5 to 3 days, 2 to 3 weeks, and 5 to 7 weeks of age; 10 yearlings; and ten 2-year-olds. Mean AG (+/- 1 SD) were 12.8 +/- 3.3, 15.2 +/- 2.9, 14.0 +/- 1.6, 12.3 +/- 1.8, and 10.4 +/- 1.2 mEq/L, respectively. Dynamic changes of horse serum T-globulin immunization with snake venoms, tetanus and diphtheria toxoids. In course of immunizing horses with snake venoms, tetanus and diphtheria toxoids, a new serum component, T-globulin, was formed and migrated between the beta- and gamma-globulins. The T-globulin content was parallel with the antibody titre after the middle course of immunization. There were many components in snake antivenin and T-globulin was composed of most of those components. Analysis of serum proteins and cerebrospinal fluid in clinically normal horses, using agarose electrophoresis. Using agarose as a supporting matrix, electrophoresis was conducted on 50 serum samples and 20 cerebrospinal fluid samples from clinically normal horses (n = 50) of various ages and breeds. The technique was shown to be reliable. A positive correlation between age and gamma-globulin concentration was found in young horses. Features of the electrophoretograms of serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples are discussed, and a nomenclature based on Rf values is proposed.
Studies on the synovia in healthy horses with particular reference to the protein composition. Synovial fluid and blood were collected from 18 clinically healthy brood mares in resting conidition.
