Equine lymphocyte antigens in four major Belgian horse populations. Contribution to serology and antigen distribution. 158 Belgian Saddlebreds, 130 Belgian Trotters, 108 Belgian Draft horses and 92 Shetland ponies have been typed for serologically defined antigens at the ELA and ELY systems. Gene frequencies were estimated in each breed for the internationally established ELA, ELY-1 and ELY-2 alleles as well as for locally assigned additional ELA markers and for subtypes of ELA-W3, W9 and W11. The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in man in Plateau State and meat animals in Nigeria. Toxoplasma gondii antibodies were found in the sera of 22.86% of people in the Jos area of Plateau State, Nigeria. The incidence of antibodies in Nigerian food animals was 17.40%, the highest being in sheep (21.92%) and lowest in goats (13.88%). Cattle and horses were roughly equally infected--about 17.0%. The zoonotic potential of T. gondii in food animals is stressed and epidemiological factors are reviewed.

A sensitive liquid chromatographic procedure for the analysis of camphor in equine urine and plasma. A sensitive method was required to analyze low levels of camphor in equine urine and plasma. Camphorated oil (20% w/w camphor) was administered topically (6 g) and intratracheally (1 g) to standardbred mares. The drug was extracted from urine and plasma by diethyl ether and analyzed as its 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone derivative by reverse phase HPLC with UV detection. Evaluation of a technique for measurement of gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase in equine urine. gamma-Glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) activity in equine urine was measured, using an assay developed for use with serum and was found to be reproducible. The GGT activity was measured in samples prepared by serial dilution of exogenous GGT with equine urine, and the activity was determined to be linear between 21 IU/L and 407 IU/L. This study compares the relationship between N-acetoxy-2-acetylaminofluorene (NA-AAF) and u.v. induced unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) and their respective relationships to age and blood pressure in horse mononuclear leukocytes with earlier, similar investigations on human leukocytes. Microquantitative measurements of ADH-activity were carried out on the livers of male and female rats, guinea-pigs and horses (two geldings and a mare). Qualitative detection of corticosteroids in equine biological fluids and the comparison of relative dexamethasone metabolite/dexamethasone concentration in equine urine by micro-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Several important corticosteroids were qualitatively determined in the plasma and urine of horses by micro-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (micro-LC-MS). The sensitivity and specificity of micro-LC-MS are demonstrated as is the ability of micro-LC-MS to deal with endogenous interferences. [Neurological disorders caused by equine herpesvirus type 1 and cauda equina neuritis in horses]. The differences in aetiology, symptomatology, pathomorphology, diagnosis and therapy between the nervous form (paralytic form) of Equine Herpes Virus, type 1, and Neuritis Caudae Equinae are reviewed. Differential effects of phenylbutazone and local anesthetics on nociception in the equine. The effects of procaine, mepivacaine and phenylbutazone on pain perception in the equine were studied using two behavioral assays of nociception; the thermal evoked hoof withdrawal reflex and skin twitch reflex. Pain perception threshold was measured as the latency from onset of thermal stimuli to reflex withdrawal of the forelimb or contraction of the cutaneous musculature. Effect of feeding on the fate of orally administered phenylbutazone, trimethoprim and sulphadiazine in the horse. Phenylbutazone, sulphadiazine and trimethoprim were administered to three horses on two occasions, recently fed and unfed, and the effect of feeding on the pharmacokinetics of the three drugs assessed. The mean peak concentrations of phenylbutazone and trimethoprim were reduced by feeding by 34 and 75 per cent, respectively. The pharmacokinetics of sulphadiazine were not significantly affected.
Substrate-dependent kinetic behavior of horse plasma cholinesterase: evidence for kinetically distinct populations of active sites. The inhibition of horse plasma cholinesterase by propranolol showed characteristics which depended upon the identity of the substrate used. With butyrylthiocholine as substrate, the inhibition showed a first-order dependence on inhibitor concentration, and was characterized by a Ki of 8 microM (pH 7.4, 20 degrees C).
