By stopped-flow and freeze-quenching techniques, it is shown that the second-order rate constant for the binding of Cu(II) to hemoglobin is greater than 5 X 10(5) mol-1 s-1 and the apparent first-order rate for the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) is 0.051 s-1. Camphorated oil (20% w/w camphor) was administered topically (6 g) and intratracheally (1 g) to standardbred mares. Initial ultrasonographic evaluation of the right gluteal region revealed oedematous change to the muscle architecture. Conservative therapy consisting of antimicrobials and stall rest was initiated. Forty-eight hours after admission a localised gluteal pyomyositis had developed. This was drained twice by percutaneous aspiration. Four days after admission the foal was euthanased. Necropsy examination revealed a septic proximal femoral physis with no grossly apparent joint involvement.
Lopes CA, Moreno G, Curi PR.The susceptibilities of 760 Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from animal infections (400), human infections (300) and healthy human carriers (60) to seven antibiotics were determined by an agar dilution technique. The isolates from human infections were more resistant to a wider spectrum of antibiotics than were the strains from animal infections and healthy human carriers. Amikacin and gentamicin were the most active drugs against all groups of strains.
