Effect of graded doses of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone on serum LH concentrations in mares in various reproductive states: comparison with endogenously generated LH pulses. An experimental model of postoperative ileus was developed in ponies using trauma to, and exposure of, a length of small intestine which gave rise to a reproducible and reversible set of changes in gut activity. The trans-cis isomerization of trans-4′-(2-hydroxy-3,5-dibromo-benzylamino)cyclohexanol in vivo and in vitro in different species. Isomerization of trans-4'-(2-hydroxy-3,5-dibromo-benzylamino)cyclohexanol (HDBC) in vivo has been investigated in horse, cow, dog, rat and man. Following oral administration of 4'-trans-HDBC to the horse, a very efficient first-pass trans-cis isomerization was observed. Exogenous corticosteroids increase serum iron concentrations in mature horses and ponies. Corticosteroid preparation was administered to 7 Shetland Ponies and 10 Quarter Horses. Serum iron concentration increased dramatically for 48 to 72 hours after the steroid treatment, whereas serum iron-binding capacity and serum ferritin concentration did not. An increase in available iron may allow bacteria to proliferate when ponies or horses are stressed or treated inappropriately with corticosteroids.

A safe, non-invasive method for the accurate measurement of bone mineral content in the third metacarpal bone of the horse is described. Iopamidol myelography in the horse. The use of the non-ionic, water-soluble contrast agent iopamidol for myelography in seven horses is described. Contrast columns of diagnostic quality were produced in all seven cases and the procedure did not invoke any adverse reactions in the five cases which were recovered from general anaesthesia. It is concluded that iopamidol is a safe and effective contrast agent for myelography in the horse.
Isolation and characterization of latherin, a surface-active protein from horse sweat. A protein, latherin, with unusual surface activity was isolated from horse sweat by gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography. Induction of ovulation in anestrous mares with pulsatile administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Four seasonally anestrous mares (Standardbred), housed under a nonstimulatory photoperiod of 8 hours light:16 hours dark, were administered gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in a pulsatile pattern (50 or 250 micrograms of GnRH/hour) for 8 to 18 days during February and March 1985. Equine thyroid function assessment with the thyrotropin-releasing hormone response test. The effect of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) on equine thyroid function was determined by quantifying serum thyroxine (T4) and 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) before and after TRH administration. Large colon resection and anastomosis in horses. Large colon resection and anastomosis was performed in 11 horses at various levels of the colon, using several surgical methods. The level of resection ranged from the pelvic flexure to the cecocolic ligament. Nine of 11 horses survived and at follow-up (4 months to 7 years) were free of clinical signs referable to disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Seven horses could be evaluated as to athletic or reproductive function and all returned to original potential.

Haustral portions of intestine of 6 horses were isolated by excising the taeniae coli from the cecum and the ventral colon.
