Systemic and colonic venous hemostatic alterations in horses during low-flow ischemia and reperfusion of the large colon. Twenty-four horses were randomly allocated to 3 groups. All horses underwent a ventral midline celiotomy, and the large colon was exteriorized and instrumented. Effects of dimethyl sulfoxide, allopurinol, 21-aminosteroid U-74389G, and manganese chloride on low-flow ischemia and reperfusion of the large colon in horses. Mechanisms of gastrointestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury and potential therapeutic interventions: a review and its implications in the horse. Restoration of blood flow after a period of intestinal ischemia is necessary to maintain cell function and viability; however, the reintroduction of oxygen can initiate a cascade of events that exacerbates tissue injury. Intestinal I-R injury is manifested as increased microvascular and mucosal permeability, and mucosal necrosis. Morphologic changes of the ascending colon during experimental ischemia and reperfusion in ponies. Systemic/topical therapy. Hopefully, the practitioner has obtained a basic broader knowledge of the options available for topical and systemic equine dermatologic therapy. There are many topical and systemic agents that can aid in the treatment of specific skin disease and there are safer alternatives to glucocorticoid therapy. Because equine dermatology is still in its infancy, there is still much to be learned. The practitioner is encouraged to pay close attention to this specialty because it will continue to evolve rapidly.
An overview of equine dermatoses characterized by scaling and crusting. Scaling and/or crusting are common clinical findings associated with equine skin diseases. Scaling and crusting may be associated with pruritic or nonpruritic dermatoses. This article focuses on those conditions that are usually nonpruritic in horses. Internal diseases that have skin lesions. Skin lesions can be associated with many internal diseases. Most organ systems seem to have conditions in which skin lesions can develop. Treatment of the skin lesions in such a situation is palliative. The underlying internal disease must be addressed for resolution of the skin lesions to occur. It is important to view the skin as an integral communicating part of the body and not just as the skin.
Overview of equine papular and nodular dermatoses. Papules and nodules are common lesions on horses and have a variety of underlying causes. This article addresses inflammatory and congenital nodules primarily, including urticaria, erythema multiforme, those nodules caused by infectious agents, epidermoid and dermoid cysts, and the uniquely equine skin tumor, the sarcoid. The eosinophilic nodules and other tumors are covered elsewhere in this issue. Diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to each of the diseases are emphasized.
Responsiveness of equine basilar artery to transmural nerve stimulation differs from that of porcine and bovine basilar arteries in vitro. Transmural nerve stimulation (TNS) induced relaxations in porcine and bovine basilar arteries which were abolished by tetrodotoxin (TTX) and by L-nitro-arginine (LNAG). However, TNS induced contractions in equine basilar artery which were abolished by TTX and by guanethidine, but not by LNAG. These results suggest that the TNS-induced contractions of equine basilar arteries may be mediated by norepinephrine release.
Comparative treatment of mares susceptible to chronic uterine infection. Four intrauterine treatment strategies were evaluated for effectiveness in mares that were confirmed to be susceptible to chronic uterine infection. Pretreatment samples were obtained at detection of estrus, and a genital strain of Streptococcus zooepidemicus was infused into the uterus when a preovulatory (> 35 mm) follicle was detected. Treatment of olecranon bursitis in horses: 10 cases (1986-1993). Medical records of 10 horses with olecranon bursitis were reviewed to examine treatments, evaluate a technique for en bloc resection of the bursa in standing horses, and determine outcome of the horses after treatment. Before admission, 6 horses had been treated by needle aspiration of fluid from the mass, followed by injection of corticosteroids. Experiences in treatment of epiglottal entrapment using a hook knife per nasum. Thirty eight horses with epiglottal entrapment were examined. In 29 the dorsally displaced mucosa was split axially with a curved hook knife, per nasum. Uterine biopsies were taken daily during the first 10 days postpartum in a total of 87 samples. Inflammation and increased numbers of bacteria in the lower respiratory tract of horses within 6 to 12 hours of confinement with the head elevated. Confinement of horses with their heads elevated for periods up to 24 hours was used to evaluate the extent and the effects of bacterial contamination of the equine lower respiratory tract. Immunisation of mares to control endometritis caused by Streptococcus zooepidemicus. Normal mares were immunised by the intramuscular and intrauterine administration of an antigen with adjuvant and they and unimmunised control mares were later challenged by the intrauterine instillation of pathogenic Streptococcus zooepidemicus; the response of all the mares was monitored clinically and bacteriologically for seven days. Fibrosing granulomas in the equine liver and peritoneum: a retrospective morphologic study. Fibrosing granulomas were found in the liver and occasionally on the intestinal and diaphragmatic serosae and in the lung of 11 horses submitted for necropsy. Although these granulomas were considered incidental findings in most of the horses, they had caused liver failure in 1 horse. Five Holstein calves and two foals with omphalophlebitis were treated by surgical marsupialization of the umbilical vein remnant because complete resection of the infected tract was not possible. Flow-cytometric studies of the phagocytic capacities of equine neutrophils. Methodological aspects of flow-cytometric evaluation of the phagocytic properties of equine neutrophils were elucidated. The kinetics of attachment and ingestion were studied, and the phagocytic process was more rapidly completed when serum-opsonized yeast cells were used than with use of IgG-opsonized yeast cells. Acute laminitis. Laminitis is an inflammation of the sensitive laminae along the dorsal aspect of the digit and is considered to be a secondary complication of several predisposing or primary factors.
