Topic:Mares

Mares and horses are integral components of equine studies, focusing on the reproductive and behavioral aspects of equine biology. Mares, or adult female horses, play a significant role in breeding programs and are often studied for their reproductive physiology, gestation, and maternal behaviors. Horses, as a broader category, encompass both sexes and all age groups, providing a comprehensive view of equine anatomy, physiology, and behavior. Research in this area often investigates the differences and similarities between mares and other horses in terms of hormonal cycles, reproductive health, and social interactions. This page compiles peer-reviewed studies and scholarly articles that explore the biological and behavioral characteristics of mares and horses, offering insights into their roles in equine science and management.

Factors affecting the incidence of postpartum oestrus, ovarian activity and reproductive performance in Thoroughbred mares bred at foal heat under Indian subtropical conditions.
Theriogenology    March 6, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 1 90-99 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.01.018
Sharma S, Davies Morel MC, Dhaliwal GS.Decreased reproductive performance due to summer stress is a well known phenomenon in farm livestock. Whether this occurs in the mare and specifically how this might affect postpartum reproductive activity and performance, especially at Foal Heat (FH), is unknown. This study, therefore, aims to investigate this and the factors that might affect postpartum reproductive activity. Reproductive records of 228 Thoroughbred mares (694 mare years) bred in subtropical north-western India were retrospectively analysed. Overt oestrous activity occurred within 21 d postpartum in 92.94% (645/694) of mares...

Theriogenology    March 4, 2010   Volume 73, Issue 8 1116-1126 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.01.013
Jacobson CC, Choi YH, Hayden SS, Hinrichs K.Oocytes may be collected from live mares from either the stimulated preovulatory follicle or from all visible immature follicles. We evaluated the yield of mature oocytes, and of blastocysts after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), for both follicle types. In Experiment 1, mares were assigned to Progesterone (1.2g biorelease progesterone weekly) or Control treatments. Transvaginal aspiration of all follicles was performed every 14 d. Overall, 596 follicles were aspirated, with a 54% oocyte recovery rate. There was no difference between treatments in number of follicles punctured (9.0 to ...
Comparative analysis of vocalizations of thoroughbred mares (Equus caballus) between estrus and diestrus.
The Journal of veterinary medical science    March 4, 2010   Volume 72, Issue 7 929-933 doi: 10.1292/jvms.09-0430
Kim YK, Seo EG, Lee SS, Suh EH, Houpt KA, Lee HC, Lee HJ, Yeon SC.We investigated the differences between vocalizations of mares in estrus and diestrus and determined the spectrographic parameters to discriminate estrus from diestrus. Thoroughbred brood mares (n=89) were exposed to a teasing procedure for 3 min, and we recorded all vocalizations emitted from them. Among the mares, 56.5% of estrus and 78.6% of diestrus mares emitted calls toward an approaching stallion, indicating that there was higher tendency in the occurrence rate of vocal responses in diestrus than estrus mares. We analyzed the spectrographic data of the mares (25 estrus and 22 diestrus m...

Equine veterinary journal    February 4, 2010   Volume 42, Issue 1 84-85 doi: 10.2746/042516409X474770
Hodder AD, Coyne CP, Madigan JE.An 11-year-old American Buckskin mare gave birth to live triplets unattended at approximately 300 days gestation. All foals were small and dysmature, requiring intensive care. The smallest foal died 4 days after admission, the second was subjected to euthanasia 24 days after admission due to poor healing of a third metatarsal fracture. The remaining foal survived to discharge and was considered small but otherwise normal at age one year.
Effect of diet on plasma tryptophan and serotonin in trained mares and geldings.
The Veterinary record    February 2, 2010   Volume 166, Issue 5 133-136 doi: 10.1136/vr.c502
Alberghina D, Giannetto C, Visser EK, Ellis AD.Concentrations of tryptophan (TRP) and serotonin (5-HT) in plasma were measured in 36 moderately trained Dutch warmblood horses after eight weeks on a high fibre (n=18) or high starch (n=18) diet. Samples were taken three hours after feeding, when the horse was at rest, either at 11.00 or 14.00 hours. Plasma 5-HT and pH were significantly higher in horses fed a high fibre diet than those fed a high starch diet (P<0.05 and P<0.01, respectively), and significantly higher levels of TRP were found in mares than geldings (P<0.05). Plasma 5-HT may therefore be a good marker of serotonergic ...

Treatment of persistent mating-induced endometritis in mares with the non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug vedaprofen.
Reproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene    January 16, 2010   Volume 45, Issue 6 e458-e460 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0531.2009.01572.x
Rojer H, Aurich C.Recently, successful treatment of mares with a history of persistent mating-induced endometritis (PMIE) with dexamethasone has been reported. As systemic treatment of horses with glucocorticoids should be handled with caution, we tested the hypothesis that treatment with the non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) vedaprofen, an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2, may have comparative, positive effects on fertility. Barren mares with a history of repeated PMIE were treated with vedaprofen (n = 8; initially 2 mg/kg bodyweight followed by 1 mg/kg orally twice daily) from 1 day before the first ins...

Huff NK, Thompson DL, Mitcham PB, Storer WA.Mares and geldings in good body condition selected for hyperleptinemia vs. normal leptin concentrations were studied to determine whether the hyperleptinemic condition affected various characteristics of the hematologic and hormonal systems after a challenge with lipopolysaccharide endotoxin. Four mares and 4 geldings that were determined to be hyperleptinemic (mean plasma leptin concentrations of 10.0 to 15.5 ng/mL) and 4 mares and 4 geldings with mean plasma leptin concentrations between 2.4 and 5.5 ng/mL were administered Escherichia coli O55:B5 endotoxin (35 ng/kg of BW in 500 mL of saline...
Markers of the uterine innate immune response of the mare.
Animal reproduction science    December 3, 2009   Volume 119, Issue 1-2 31-39 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2009.11.008
Nash DM, Sheldon IM, Herath S, Lane EA.Reproductive efficiency in mares is low and persistent mating-induced endometritis (PMIE) is an important cause of subfertility. Mating-induced endometritis (MIE) an obligate precursor to PMIE, is a ubiquitous, transient inflammatory response to the presence of sperm, seminal components and pathogens. However, the specific inflammatory pathways that derive from MIE and that may also be precursors to PMIE are not clear. The ability to identify and measure robust, repeatable markers of inflammation integral to MIE may be key to understanding the progression to PMIE. The aim of the study was to (...
