Pharmacokinetics of chloramphenicol in the neonatal horse. Small intestinal resection (SIR) is not uncommonly done in surgical treatment of equine colic, but little is known about the long-term effects of SIR on horses and ponies. The concentration of copper and zinc in the blood and sera of over 300 Thoroughbreds in training was determined by atomic absorption between February 1979 and July 1981. Acute vitamin D3 toxicosis in horses: case reports and experimental studies of the comparative toxicity of vitamins D2 and D3. Acute vitamin D toxicosis was diagnosed in 2 horses fed a grain ration containing 1,102,311 IU of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3)/kg (500,000 IU/lb) for about 30 days. Fatty acid composition of serum lipids in fasting ponies. Alterations in the fatty acid distribution of total lipid extracts and 4 of the major lipid subclasses of serum in ponies fasted overnight and for 4 and 7 days were determined. Although increases in 16:0, 16:1, and 18:3 omega 3 were observed, decreased amounts of 18:0 and 18:2 omega 6 combined to cause no significant change in the saturated to unsaturated fatty acid ratio in the total extracts. Case of equine goitre. A brief review of the literature on equine goitre is presented, together with a case of congenital goitre in a foal. This animal showed localised swelling of the neck, hyperextension of the lower limbs and initial difficulty in sucking. The goitre was removed surgically and the hyperextension successfully treated with surgical shoes and bandaging. The cause was probably iodine deficiency coupled with a goitrogen in the diet.
The effect of nutritional stress on the plasma progestagen levels and embryonic mortality in twin pregnancies of mares. Two thoroughbred mares bearing twins as diagnosed by rectal palpation, were subjected to nutritional stress by drastically reducing the daily ration. This resulted in a marked reduction in plasma progestagen levels and the death of either one or both of the twin embryos.
Effects of intragastric loads of xylose, sodium chloride and corn oil on feeding behavior of ponies. This series of experiments was designed to investigate gastrointestinal (GI) stimuli that contribute to the normal control of feed intake in ponies. Osmotic stimuli were tested using intragastric (IG) infusion of .83 osmolar solutions of xylose (250 g) and NaCl (48 g) vs 2-liter water controls. Limb deformities in foals associated with ingestion of locoweed by mares. Five of 26 pregnant mares observed ingesting locoweed (Astragalus mollisimus) subsequently aborted and another 10 produced foals with various limb deformities. Seven of the foals had deformities of a flexion-extension type and 3 had angular deformities. Four foals were normal.
