In addition, attention is drawn to monitoring methods capable of exposing the deplorable shortcomings of these businesses.
An explanation of a groove found on the nasal process of the equine incisive bone. Thirteen fresh equine heads were dissected in an attempt to determine the cause of a groove frequently found on the dorsal border and medial side of the nasal process of the incisive bone. This groove appeared on both sides in 40 out of 44 equine skulls. The sulcus seems to be caused by the combined action of the lateralis nasi muscle and the medial accessory cartilage of the nose (cartilago nasalis accessoria medialis). Other sulci found on the nasal process of the bone may be explained as impressions caused by nerves.
Loading the problem loader: the effects of target training and shaping on trailer-loading behavior of horses. The purpose of this study was to develop an effective method for trailer loading horses based on principles of positive reinforcement. Target training and shaping were used to teach trailer-loading behavior to 5 quarter horse mares in a natural setting. All 5 had been trailer loaded before through the use of aversive stimulation. Sexual behavior of stallions during in-hand natural service and semen collection: an observation in French studs. The sexual behavior of 42 stallions from French national and private studs was examined in two contexts: semen collection for artificial insemination (AI) and in-hand natural service (NS). Each stallion was observed twice in the same context. Erection and ejaculation latencies, the number of mounts leading to ejaculation, dismount latency and total breeding time were measured and compared between AI and NS. Evaluation of the EMG activity of the long back muscle during induced back movements at stance. In this study we investigated the activity of the main back muscle (Musculus longissimus) by surface electromyography (EMG) during induced extension and lateral flexion at stance. [Horse-related accidents 1989-1999]. A previous estimate has indicated that horse activities in Denmark account for about 5750 non-fatal and 1-2 fatal accidents every year. Many are preventable, as they are caused by carelessness. A description of the accident pattern is important. Growth dynamics of lipizzan horses and their comparison to other horse breeds. A typical body format of Slovenian Lipizzan horse was investigated. The study included 6 foals (5 colts and 1 filly) at the Lipica stud farm. They were measured from birth to twenty-seven months and again at forty-four months of age. Effects of intravenous lidocaine overdose on cardiac electrical activity and blood pressure in the horse. This study aimed to identify blood serum lidocaine concentrations in the horse which resulted in clinical signs of intoxication, and to document the effects of toxic levels on the cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary systems. Growth of thoroughbreds fed a low-protein supplement fortified with lysine and threonine. Growth and protein status were examined in Thoroughbred foals and yearlings offered pasture supplements with different crude protein contents and amino acid compositions. Both supplements contained 3.0 Mcal/kg DM, 10% corn oil, 1.4% calcium, and three sources of fiber. A note on the effects of forward and rear-facing orientations on movement of horses during transport. Several studies have attempted to determine the effects of orientation on a horse's ability to maintain balance during transportation. The results have often been contradictory because of differences in trailer design and lack of simultaneous comparisons. Cataract phacofragmentation in horses. Cataract surgeries were carried out in fifty-one eyes of 36 horses over a 15-year period. Cataracts were removed using phacofragmentation and aspiration. Useful vision was restored after surgery in 30 horses. One year after surgery 16 of the 19 horses for which follow up information was available were still visual with several still being used as working horses. Study of the behaviour, digestive efficiency and gut transit times of crib-biting horses. The spontaneous behaviour and the apparent digestibility of dry matter and fibre and transit times of digesta were compared in four normal horses and four crib-biters. A technique was developed for measuring total gut transit times (TGTT) by using single-stool analysis of the passage of radio-opaque polyethylene markers. Longer TGTT were recorded in the crib-biters than in the normal horses but the orocaecal transit times did not differ. The crib-biters rested less than the normal horses.

Celiotomy closure via permanent implantation of polyamide in horses. Permanent implantation of nonabsorbable materials is appropriate in many surgical circumstances but is not commonly used to close equine celiotomies. This paper describes a simple method of continuous nonabsorbable implantation of polyamide suture used successfully to close 48 equine celiotomies. Forty-eight clean or clean-contaminated celiotomies were successfully performed over 5 years using this technique. Heart rate and behavioural responses of crib-biting horses to two acute stressors. The heart rate and behaviour of 14 adult saddle horses, eight crib-biters and six normal controls, were investigated. Initially, the relationship between crib-biting and heart rate was investigated while the horses were undisturbed. The horses were tested when restrained with a lip twitch, and assessed when they were exposed suddenly to the rapid inflation of a balloon. Phenylephrine eyedrops as a diagnostic test in equine grass sickness. The effect of an ocular administration of the alpha-1 adrenergic agonist phenylephrine was studied in 23 cases of grass sickness and 12 control horses. In the horses with grass sickness there was a significantly greater mean increase in the size of the palpebral fissure, as measured by the change in the angle of the eyelashes to the head observed from a frontal view.
