Effect of glucose administration on equine fasting hyperbilirubinemia. The effects of several treatments and their routes of administration on the reduction of hyperbilirubinemia in 9 pony mares after a 3-day fast were studied. Bilirubin excretion following feeding or the infusion of glucose in ponies. Bile flow, during feeding and fasting, was studied in three ponies in which catheters, maintained in the bile duct over 1-2 months, drained all bile continuously. During experiments bile was returned to the small intestine, via a second catheter, by means of a small pump which also measured bile flow rates. In unanesthetized ponies, arterial blood gas tensions, pulmonary mechanics, and lung volumes were determined before and 24 to 48 hours after oral administration of 500 ml of corn oil or 100 mg of 3-methylindole (3MI)/kg of body weight in 500 ml of corn oil. Renal function of the pony and the horse. Simultaneous renal clearances of inulin (CIN), p-aminohippurate (CPAH), and creatinine (CCR) were measured in hydrated mares (6 ponies and 2 horses). The CIN and CPAH were determined during steady-state infusion at 3 different infusion rates. Controlled tests of fenbendazole against migrating Strongylus vulgaris in ponies. Sixteen pony foals were reared worm-free and inoculated with Strongylus vulgaris. On day 7 after inoculation, 12 ponies were given a fenbendazole 10% suspension at dose rate of 50 mg/kg of body weight by stomach tube. Pedal bone rotation as a prognostic sign in laminitis of horses. We reviewed 91 cases of laminitis in horses admitted to the Michigan State University Veterinary Clinical Center between Jan 1, 1973 and Dec. 30, 1978. From information in the case records and from the results of a telephone questionnaire, cases were classified into 4 categories on the basis of return to athletic function. The degree of pedal bone rotation was inversely correlated with return to athletic performance. Effect of diethylcarbamazine on Strongylus vulgaris infection in ponies. Shetland ponies (n = 4) were given diethylcarbamazine orally at a dose level of 22 mg/kg/day for 1 week before they were inoculated with 800 third-stage larvae of Strongylus vulgaris. Effects of pinealectomy in Pony mares. The Shwartzman phenomenon in equine species. The occurrence of the Local Shwartzman Reaction (LSR) in equine species has not previously been reported. The molecular mechanism appears identical to that reported for the rabbit and other species. The immunopathologic and histopathologic similarities of the experimentally induced LSR in horses and ponies to that of the hoof-laminae (an extension of the skin) lesion in naturally-occurring and/or carbohydrate induced laminitis may offer insight into the pathogenesis of this complex disease.

Calcium metabolism in glucocorticoid-treated pony foals. Pony foals were injected intramuscularly with 0, 0.5, or 5.0 mg dexamethasone per 100 kg body weight daily for up to 11 months. Pancreatic beta cell function in the neonatal foal. Plasma concentrations of insulin and glucose were measured in Pony and Thoroughbred foals at birth and at intervals thereafter for up to 7 days. Lymphocyte stimulation was observed in whole equine blood in the presence of phytohaemagglutinin and M protein extracted from a typical strain of Streptococcus equi.
