Fertility, ovulation and maturation of eggs in mares injected with HCG. Pony mares were observed from January to August for incidence of oestrus, duration of oestrus, length of the oestrous cycle and for ovulation and fertility after injection of HCG. From January to 15 May most mares showed oestrus but the duration of oestrus was quite variable and few mares ovulated in response to HCG. From 15 May to 17 August oestrous cycles were more regular and ovulation was induced within 40-50 h by an intramuscular injection of 1500-5000 i.u. HCG. Studies on the equine placenta. III. Ultrastructure of the uterine glands and the overlying trophoblast. Ultrastructural studies of the uterine glands at intervals during pregnancy in the mare show that secretory activity continues after formation of the placental exchange units. The nature of the glandular secretion appeared initially to be proteinaceous, but cellular debris was also present during the last third of gestation. These secretions were absorbed by the trophoblast overlying the mouths of the glands. The fate secretions and their significance for the fetus and placenta are unknown.
An epidemic of venereal infection in thoroughbreds. The clinical pattern, bacteriological investigation and subsequent treatment of a serious outbreak of venereal disease in stud farms on both sides of the Irish Sea is described. The consistency with which Bacillus proteus was isolated from infected mares and stallions was remarkable. Prompt treatment with ampicillin, to which the organism was sensitive in vitro, eradicated the disease. No local treatment was applied.
Arrhenoblastoma in a mare. An ovarian neoplasm measuring 10 by 8 by 6 cm was surgically removed from a 14-year-old Appaloosa mare. For 2 years prior to surgery, the mare had manifested marked behavioral changes, becoming aggressive toward other broodmares. Histologically, the tumor was found to be an arrhenoblastoma. Preoperative endocrinologic findings (high serum testosterone and low serum estradiol concentrations) supported the diagnosis.
A critical review of current methods for induction of parturition in the mare. The efficacy and safety of oxytocin, dexamethasone and prostaglandin, used alone or in combination as inducing agents, are discussed. It is contended that insufficient evidence exists to support the routine application of any of these methods in practice. Oxytocin has been the most widely used and it is claimed by some to be free from side effects. Effect of age and pregnancy on the antibody and cell-mediated immune responses of horses to equine herpesvirus 1. The cell-mediated immune response and antibody response of horses of varying ages and of pregnant horses to equine herpesvirus 1 antigen were examined. Six to eight month old horses showed either no increase or slight increases in anti-equine herpesvirus 1 serum neutralizing antibody following vaccination and revaccination with a modified live equine herpesvirus 1 vaccine. Phosphatase activity of placental extracts and pregnant mare’s plasma. Equine placental extracts show phosphatase activity with a pH optimum between 4.5 and 6. The enzyme shows heat stability to 45 degrees C and electrophoresis on cellulose acetate demonstrates the presence of two bands of activity. Histochemistry confirms the presence of phosphatase activity in the placental villi. Assay of plasma samples from pregnant mares showed no increase in phosphatase activity through pregnancy under conditions of test.
Equine herpesviruses. Experimental infection of a foetus with type 2. Intrauterine infection of pregnant mare with equine herpesvirus type 2 (EHV 2) did not result in foetal abortion, stillbirth or recognisable disease. Collection of uterine fluid by allantocentesis or amniocentesis 107 days after inoculation confirmed that intrauterine infection was established. The influence of chlormadinone acetate treatment on the concentration of some steroids in the blood, on the ovarian activity, and on the sexual behaviour of the mare. The effect of orally administered chlormadinone acetate (CAP), 10 mg daily for a period of 16 days, was investigated in the case of four mares with an irregular oestrous pattern accompanied by low ovarian activity (group 1), four mares which did not show oestrous symptoms at all and which had also low ovarian activity (group 2), and two ovariectomized and two ovario-hysterectomized mares (group 3). Direct radioimmunoassay of progesterone in mare plasma. A rapid and low cost radioimmunologic procedure for progesterone assay in mare plasma is proposed. Radioimmunoassay is performed directly on 10 microliter of unextracted plasma. Free progesterone is adsorbed on dextran-charcoal, then the aqueous phase is decanted and extracted by 1 ml of scintillation fluid. Counting is performed directly on this two-phase system. Results are comparable to those obtained with radioimmunoassays using extracted plasma.

A brief review is presented of the use in equine veterinary medicine of anterior pituitary hormones, posterior pituitary hormones, placental hormones, steroid hormones and prostaglandins. Influence of foetal genotype on the follicle-stimulating hormone:luteinizing hormone ratio of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin. Rat testicular radioreceptor assays specific for FSH and LH were used to determine the FSH:LH ratio of PMSG produced by horse, donkey, mule and hinny conceptuses. Measurements of FSH and LH activities in PMSG produced both in vivo and in vitro by the four types of conceptuses showed that the genotype of the foetus markedly influences the FSH:LH ratio of PMSG. Equine herpesvirus 1 infection of horses: studies on the experimentally induced neurologic disease. Experimental infection with equine herpesvirus 1 (rhinopneumonitis) resulted in neurologic disease in 8 of 15 inoculated horses. Nonpregnant animals did not develop clinical disease, and microscopic examination of tissues revealed no changes. In all mares between 3 and 9 months of gestation, a neurologic syndrome appeared 6 to 8 days after inoculation. Mares inoculated when 10 months pregnant did not develop neurologic disorders, but several aborted.
