Topic:Stallion

Stallions are adult male horses that have not been gelded and are often used for breeding purposes. They exhibit distinct behavioral and physiological characteristics compared to mares and geldings. Stallions are known for their strong musculature, prominent neck, and often more pronounced mane and tail. Their behavior can be more aggressive and territorial, especially during the breeding season, as they naturally compete for mating opportunities. This topic explores the anatomy, behavior, and management practices specific to stallions, as well as their role in equine reproduction. The page provides access to peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that investigate various aspects of stallion health, fertility, and behavior, contributing to the understanding and management of these horses in equine science.
Cytofluorescent assay to quantify adhesion of equine spermatozoa to oviduct epithelial cells in vitro.
Molecular reproduction and development    January 1, 1996   Volume 43, Issue 1 55-61 doi: 10.1002/(SICI)1098-2795(199601)43:1<55::AID-MRD7>3.0.CO;2-T
Thomas PG, Ball BA.To facilitate the study of interactions between equine spermatozoa and homologous oviduct epithelial cells, we developed an assay to count labelled spermatozoa bound to oviduct epithelial cell (OEC) monolayers and used the assay to compare the binding ability of spermatozoa from different stallions. Washed spermatozoa from three stallions were incubated with the fluorochrome Hoechst 33342 (5 micrograms/ml) for 1 min. Spermatozoa were then layered over confluent monolayers of oviduct epithelial cells in 2 cm2 culture wells. Coculture treatments comprised five concentrations of spermatozoa (10(5...
Use of imipramine hydrochloride for treatment of urospermia in a stallion with a dysfunctional bladder.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    December 15, 1995   Volume 207, Issue 12 1602-1606
Turner RM, Love CC, McDonnell SM, Sweeney RW, Twitchell ED, Habecker PL, Reilly LK, Pozor MA, Kenney RM.An 8-year-old stallion was evaluated because of recurrent urinary tract infections and chronic intermittent urospermia. After extensive diagnostic testing, it was hypothesized that the stallion had a reflex dyssynergia of the bladder and urethral sphincter. Initial attempts to manage the urospermia included semen fractionation, semen collection after voluntary urination, and use of semen extenders. None of these efforts reliably yielded a quality ejaculate. Administration of imipramine hydrochloride (1.2 mg/kg of body weight, PO, 4 hours prior to semen collection) was initiated in an attempt t...
Laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy in two stallions.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    December 15, 1995   Volume 207, Issue 12 1599-1601
Fischer AT, Vachon AM, Klein SR.Two mature stallions that were used for breeding purposes were admitted for evaluation of inguinal hernias. In 1 horse, the hernia was reduced per rectum by gentle traction applied to the intestine. In the other horse, the hernia was reduced by placing the horse in dorsal recumbency and applying external pressure over the scrotum. Both horses were observed for recurrence of the hernia. Seven days later, an elective laparoscopic technique for inguinal herniorrhaphy was performed on each horse, using polypropylene mesh. Complications did not develop, and both horses have successfully completed 2...
[Ryegrass cramps in horses].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    December 15, 1995   Volume 120, Issue 24 710-711
van Essen GJ, Blom M, Fink Gremmels-Gehrmann J.To elaborate the diagnosis of rye-grass intoxication in a stallion demonstrating a neurotoxic syndrome characterized by ataxia and incoordination, a number of diagnostic tests were performed. Results of both, blood chemistry and haematology gave no indication for organ-specific or systemic lesions. Chemical analysis of the hay fed to the horse revealed the presence of the mycotoxin lolitrem B in concentrations consistent with those described in sheep and cattle with similar symptoms. Thus, it was concluded that the animals demonstrated the rye-grass-stagger(RGS)-syndrome.

Parassitologia    December 1, 1995   Volume 37, Issue 2-3 215-217
Battelli G, Galuppi R, Pietrobelli M, Tampieri MP.Fecal examinations of horses (Equus caballus) from studs in the province of Udine (Friuli Venezia Giulia region, east-northern Italy), carried out during two periods of the year 1993, revealed coccidian oocysts in six foals, two stallions and one mare. The species was identified as Eimeria leuckarti. This species was reported only once in Italy, more than 20 years ago (1972). For this reason, the prevalence of the parasite and the description of immature and sporulated oocysts are given.
Effect of coculture with stallion spermatozoa on de novo protein synthesis and secretion by equine oviduct epithelial cells.
American journal of veterinary research    December 1, 1995   Volume 56, Issue 12 1657-1662
Thomas PG, Ignotz GG, Ball BA, Brinsko SP, Currie WB.Adhesion of equine spermatozoa to homologous oviduct epithelial cells (OEC) in vitro results in specific changes in spermatozoa and OEC function. To test the hypothesis that adhesion of spermatozoa affects protein synthesis and secretion by OEC, the following treatment groups were established in culture: OEC with culture medium only; control spermatozoa in culture medium only; OEC in coculture with spermatozoa; and OEC and spermatozoa in coculture, but physically separated by a microporous membrane. The experiment was replicated within each of 4 ejaculates from 3 stallions. De novo protein sec...
Sexual and in-contact transmission of asinine strain of equine arteritis virus among donkeys.
Journal of clinical microbiology    December 1, 1995   Volume 33, Issue 12 3296-3299 doi: 10.1128/jcm.33.12.3296-3299.1995
Paweska JT, Volkmann DH, Barnard BJ, Chirnside ED.Two in a group of five naturally seropositive donkey stallions were found to shed equine arteritis virus (EAV) in their semen as demonstrated by virus isolation. Direct intramuscular inoculation of sonicated semen from one virus-shedding stallion (S3) caused clinical disease in two donkeys from which virus was recovered and in which seroconversion was detected. Sexual transmission was confirmed in two mares mated to S3 when after a febrile response during which EAV was isolated from huffy coats and nasal and ocular exudates, both mares were found to have seroconverted. In-contact transmission ...
Effect of various extenders and taurine on survival of stallion sperm cooled to 5 degrees C.
Theriogenology    November 1, 1995   Volume 44, Issue 7 1039-1050 doi: 10.1016/0093-691x(95)00290-o
Ijaz A, Ducharme R.Stallion semen was diluted in five different extenders (dimitro-poulus onze (Dimitro's), Kenney's modified tryode (Kenney's), modified INRA82 (INRA82), egg yolk-citrate-taurine (Citrate) and EZ-Mixin) and evaluated for motility after cooling and storage at 5 degrees C for 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. EZ-Mixin extender was used as control while 70 and 100 mM of taurine were added to Dimitro's, Kenney's and INRA82 to study its effect under conditions of storage at 5 degrees C and varying processing modifications. Motility in INRA82 was 57.0, 58.4, 61.1, and 56.1% after 24, 48, 72 and 96 h, respective...
Cryopreservation reduces the ability of equine spermatozoa to attach to oviductal epithelial cells and zonae pellucidae in vitro.
Journal of andrology    November 1, 1995   Volume 16, Issue 6 536-542
Dobrinski I, Thomas PG, Ball BA.Two bioassays were used to evaluate the interaction of fresh and cryopreserved equine semen with oviductal epithelial cells (OEC) and with the zona pellucida (ZP). Split ejaculates were either stored at room temperature or frozen and thawed. In experiment 1, progressive motility and membrane integrity were evaluated for each treatment. Fluorescent labeled spermatozoa were cocultured with monolayers of OEC for 30 minutes, and the number of sperm attached to OEC was counted by fluorescence microscopy and analysis of digitized images. Motility of spermatozoa attached to OEC was observed at 0.5, 3...
Relation between stallion sperm binding to homologous hemizonae and fertility.
Theriogenology    October 1, 1995   Volume 44, Issue 5 751-760 doi: 10.1016/0093-691x(95)00254-6
Fazeli AR, Steenweg W, Bevers MM, van den Broek J, Bracher V, Parlevliet J, Colenbrander B.The hemizona assay (HZA) has been developed as a diagnostic test to predict the fertilisation potential of human spermatozoa. The aim of this study was to develop an HZA for stallion spermatozoa and to investigate a possible relationship between fertility and the outcome of the HZA in this species. Equine oocytes were obtained from ovaries collected at a slaughterhouse and by transvaginal, ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration. They were then denuded from cumulus cells and stored in salt solution at 4 degrees C until use. On the day of the experiments the oocytes were bisected, thus providing ...
Effect of different protein supplements on motility and plasma membrane integrity of frozen-thawed stallion spermatozoa.
Cryobiology    October 1, 1995   Volume 32, Issue 5 487-492 doi: 10.1006/cryo.1995.1048
Braun J, Hochi S, Oguri N, Sato K, Torres-Boggino F.Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of different macromolecule components (egg yolk, skim milk, and BSA) in a widely employed extender for cryopreservation of horse semen. Spermatozoal motility (MOT) and the percentage of spermatozoa with an intact plasma membrane (IPM) were evaluated in frozen-thawed samples. In the first experiment (four Draft Horse stallions, four ejaculates each) a standard freezing extender containing 20% whole egg yolk was modified by replacing extender components (glucose-EDTA solution, 11% lactose solution) with an increasing volume of a skim milk d...

Effect of glycosylation on the heparin-binding capability of boar and stallion seminal plasma proteins.
Journal of chromatography. A    September 8, 1995   Volume 711, Issue 1 167-173 doi: 10.1016/0021-9673(95)00011-b
Calvete JJ, Reinert M, Sanz L, Töpfer-Petersen E.Boar and stallion seminal plasmas were fractionated using affinity chromatography on heparin-Sepharose. In both species, among other proteins, the heparin-binding (H+) and non-heparin-binding (H-) fractions each contained glycoforms of either porcine PSP-I or equine HSP-1 and HSP-2. However, porcine H+/PSP-I eluted as a monomeric protein, whereas H-/PSP-I formed a heterodimer with PSP-II, another major seminal plasma protein. On the other hand, the stallion proteins H+/HSP-1 and H+/HSP-2 eluted together as an aggregate of relative molecular mass (M(r)) 90,000, whereas H-/HSP-1 and H-/HSP-2 elu...
Harem stability and reproductive success of Misaki feral mares.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 368-372 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04072.x
Kaseda Y, Khalil AM, Ogawa H.The stability of relationships between harem stallions and mares (consort relations) was investigated and the durations of inter partum intervals were determined in order to establish if there was any correlation between the stability of consort relation and reproductive success of mares in Misaki feral horses. Thirty-four mares were observed continuously for more than 5 years. The lifetime stability was 80-100% (mean 92.4%) for 16 mares, 60-79% (mean 70.4%) for 10 mares and 0-59% (mean 27.9%) for 8 mares. The continuous length (years) of specific consort relations was 2-10 years and was found...

The Biochemical journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 310 ( Pt 2), Issue Pt 2 615-622 doi: 10.1042/bj3100615
Calvete JJ, Mann K, Schäfer W, Sanz L, Reinert M, Nessau S, Raida M, Töpfer-Petersen E.We report the complete amino acid sequence of HSP-1, a major protein isolated from stallion seminal plasma or acid extracts of ejaculated spermatozoa. The protein consists of 121 amino acids organized in two types of homologous repeats arranged in the pattern AA'BB'. Each of the 13-15-residue A-type repeats contains two O-linked oligosaccharide chains. The B-type repeats span 44-47 amino acids each, are not glycosylated, and have the consensus pattern of the gelatin-binding fibronectin type-II module. This domain also occurs in the major bovine seminal plasma heparin-binding proteins PDC-109 (...
Hyperkalaemic periodic paralysis in Australian quarter horses.
Australian veterinary journal    August 1, 1995   Volume 72, Issue 8 314-316 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1995.tb03563.x
Church S.Three Quarter Horse stallions and 5 of their 11 tested progeny were diagnosed as affected with the inherited autosomal dominant defect hyperkalaemic periodic paralysis in Victoria in 1992. The diagnoses were based on the appearance of clinical signs and associated increased plasma potassium concentrations in response to oral potassium loading. All affected horses were descendants of the American Quarter Horse Impressive. Indirect evidence indicates that at least 3 other affected Quarter Horse stallions have stood or are standing at stud in Australia. The clinical details of the affected horses...
[Control of ovulation in the mare with Ovuplant (short-term release of the GnRH analog deslorelin acetate). Overview of investigations from 1990 to 1994].
Tierarztliche Praxis    August 1, 1995   Volume 23, Issue 4 381-393
Jöchle W.Ovuplant (deslorelin STI), when used in estrous mares with a follicle > or = 30 mm, reliably causes acceleration of ovulation and assurance that > 80% of the treated mares will ovulate within 48 hours. Time to ovulation is reduced by 30 hours or more. Treatment with Ovuplant had no adverse effects on pregnancy rates and did not increase the rate of early twin pregnancies. Treatment did not cause local or systemic side effects beyond short-term local irritation. Mares can be treated repeatedly without the development of tolerance or the loss of effectiveness. These studies have shown that...

Use of pharmacologically induced ejaculation to obtain semen from a stallion with a fractured radius.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    June 15, 1995   Volume 206, Issue 12 1906-1908
Turner RM, McDonnell SM, Hawkins JF.Ejaculation was pharmacologically induced in a 13-year-old Quarter Horse stallion with a spiral fracture of the radius. The owners desired to have semen from the stallion frozen prior to euthanatizing the horse, but because of the debilitating injury, standard methods of semen collection could not be used. With the stallion standing quietly in a stall, a plastic collection bag was positioned over the stallion's penis, and clomipramine hydrochloride (2.2 mg/kg of body weight, IV) was administered. Fifty-five minutes later, xylazine hydrochloride (0.5 mg/kg, IV) was administered. The stallion ej...
Hoof horn abnormalities in Lipizzaner horses and the effect of dietary biotin on macroscopic aspects of hoof horn quality.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 3 175-182 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03060.x
Josseck H, Zenker W, Geyer H.This study involved a macroscopic evaluation of hoof quality in 152 Lipizzaner horses (130 from Austria and 22 from other countries) and a controlled double blind trial of the effects of biotin on hoof horn growth and quality over 19 months in 42 stallions from the Spanish Riding School (SRS) in Vienna. Using a grading system that incorporated evaluation of horn wall, white line, sole and frog, the macroscopic study revealed the following: 90% of the Austrian Lipizzaners had soft white lines and crumbling, fissured horn at the bearing border of the walls; 39% of the stallions of the SRS, > ...
Urethral defects in geldings with hematuria and stallions with hemospermia.
Veterinary surgery : VS    May 1, 1995   Volume 24, Issue 3 250-254 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1995.tb01326.x
Schumacher J, Varner DD, Schmitz DG, Blanchard TL.A urethral defect, presumed to communicate with the corpus spongiosum penis, caused hematuria in seven geldings and hemospermia in three stallions. Hematuria in geldings occurred at the end of urination. Hematuria was not observed in stallions with hemospermia. A linear urethral defect was identified, by endoscopic examination, on the convex surface the urethra at the level of the ischial arch of each horse. Cause of the defect was not determined. Two stallions were successfully treated for hemospermia, one by temporary subischial urethrostomy combined with sexual rest for 10 weeks, and the ot...

The Journal of veterinary medical science    April 1, 1995   Volume 57, Issue 2 225-229 doi: 10.1292/jvms.57.225
Torres-Boggino F, Sato K, Oka A, Kanno Y, Hochi S, Oguri N, Braun J.Seminal characteristics, fertility and the response to semen preservation (liquid storage and cryopreservation) were evaluated in 4 Draft stallions (Percheron 2, Breton 2). Seminal characteristics (gel-free volume, sperm concentration, sperm morphology, percentage of motile spermatozoa) were assessed in 5 ejaculates from each of the 4 stallions. The fertility of the stallions was calculated retrospectively as the accumulated pregnancy rate over 3 breeding seasons. Five ejaculates from each of the stallions were subjected to liquid storage at 5 degrees C. The percentage of motile spermatozoa (P...
Plasmid profiles of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from horses.
The Journal of veterinary medical science    February 1, 1995   Volume 57, Issue 1 113-115 doi: 10.1292/jvms.57.113
Kikuchi N, Blakeslee JR, Hiramune T.Plasmid profiles of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from horses were examined. Thirty-nine strains of K. pneumoniae capsular type 1 (K1) isolated from cervical swabs of mares suffering from metritis, and from semen of stallions showed similar plasmid profile patterns, and all strains possessed a 125 megadaltons (Md) plasmid. There was no difference in plasmid profiles between the heavily-encapsulated and the less heavily-encapsulated strains of K. pneumoniae K1. Non-capsulated variants derived from the strains of K1 showed the same plasmid profile pattern as the parent strains. Plasmid profiles...

The Veterinary record    January 7, 1995   Volume 136, Issue 1 7-12 doi: 10.1136/vr.136.1.7
McCartan CG, Russell MM, Wood JL, Mumford JA.An outbreak of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) occurred on a large stud farm with 133 mares, 54 foals and four stallions, and at least 85 mares, 22 foals and three stallions were infected. Clinical disease was observed in 16 mares, two stallions and 13 foals and the predominant clinical signs were scrotal oedema, ataxia and loss of libido in the stallions, ataxia and recumbency in the mares and uveitis and nasal discharge in the foals, although pneumonia and colic with intussusception were also recorded at autopsy. Neurological disease was more common in the mares nursing foals (12 of 38 infected...
Spermatophagy in the stallion epididymis: a scanning and transmission electron microscopy study.
Acta anatomica    January 1, 1995   Volume 153, Issue 3 181-188
López Alvarez ML, Bustos Obregón E.The occurrence of phagocytosis of spermatozoa in the epididymis is a controversial issue in male reproductive biology. In this paper we documented, by scanning and electron microscopy, the presence of spermatophages in the lumen of the proximal region of stallion epididymis. Sperm phagocytosis involving the principal cells that line the cauda epididymidis region was also observed. The possible meaning of this process in the removal of damaged, aged or surplus spermatozoa is discussed. These observations were made in samples obtained from random cases, during the course of research work carried...
Effects of lipoprotein, equine luteinizing hormone, equine follicle-stimulating hormone, and equine prolactin on equine testicular steroidogenesis in vitro.
