Topic:Standardbred Horses

Standardbred horses are a breed known for their performance in harness racing, characterized by their ability to trot or pace at high speeds. This breed is distinguished by its well-muscled build, strong legs, and calm temperament. Standardbreds are primarily used in racing but are also versatile in other equestrian activities, including riding and driving. Their genetic lineage can be traced back to the late 18th century, with the establishment of the breed registry in the United States. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the genetics, physiology, and performance characteristics of Standardbred horses, as well as their management and health considerations in various equine disciplines.
Skeletal muscle characteristics in red blood cell normovolaemic and hypervolaemic standardbred racehorses.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1994   Volume 26, Issue 4 319-322 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1994.tb04393.x
Ronéus M, Persson SG, Essén-Gustavsson B, Arnason T.Muscle biopsy specimens from the middle gluteal muscle were studied in 16 red blood cell hypervolaemic (Group HV) and 19 normovolaemic (Group NV) Standardbred racehorses. All horses were stallions, 4-8 years old and having similar mean racing performance values, as described by an individual selection index value. All horses raced regularly but those in Group HV did not perform as expected and were therefore referred to the clinics for exercise tolerance testing. Muscle biopsy specimens were analysed for fibre type distribution (Type I, IIA and IIB), fibre area and relative fibre area. In addi...
Transendoscopic contact neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet laser treatment of tympany of the auditory tube diverticulum in two foals.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    June 15, 1994   Volume 204, Issue 12 1927-1929
Tetens J, Tulleners EP, Ross MW, Orsini PG, Martin BB.Tympany of the auditory tube diverticulum was treated in 2 Standardbred foals by fenestrating the median septum, using an endoscopically placed Nd:YAG laser. Recurrence in 1 foal was treated by enlarging the fenestration, using a modified Whitehouse approach, and the pharyngeal opening of the auditory tube. Use of the Nd:YAG laser eliminates the risk of inadvertent cranial nerve damage associated with incisions into the auditory tube diverticulum. The procedure can be performed with the horse sedated or anesthetized. Clinical signs can recur in the fenestration heals closed or if the condition...

Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1994   Volume 26, Issue 3 251-254 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1994.tb04381.x
Mäkelä O, Gustavsson I, Hollmén T.Chromosomal analysis is not a routine examination in equine practice. It is indicated, however, in infertile or subfertile mares with small, inactive ovaries (Chandley et a/. 1975; Power 1986). The most commonly reported abnormalities in mares concern sex chromosomes such as 63,XO and mosaic 63,XO/64,XX giving sterile mares and 64,XY resulting in gonadal dysgenesis, sex reversal and testicular feminisation (Power 1990). The phenotypic manifestations of a horse with these karyotypic abnormalities are usually quite mild compared with the corresponding abnormalities in man. These mild ...

The veterinary quarterly    May 1, 1994   Volume 16 Suppl 2 S76-S80
van den Belt AJ, Dik KJ, Barneveld A.Over a 2 year-period, the ultrasonographic localization and distribution of flexor tendinous and ligamentous injuries, the long-term follow-up, and the outcome were studied in 101 Dutch Warmblood horses (DW) with a mean age of 8.7 years and in 71 Standardbred racehorses (ST) with a mean age of 5.2 years. The ratio between forelimb and hind limb flexor tendonitis/desmitis in the DW-group was 4:1 and in the ST-group group 4:3. In the DW-group, tendonitis/desmitis of the suspensory ligament (32%), the superficial digital flexor tendon (29%), the distal carpal check ligament (17%) of the forelimb ...
The effect of toe weights on linear and temporal stride characteristics of standardbred trotters.
The veterinary quarterly    May 1, 1994   Volume 16 Suppl 2 S97-S100
Willemen MA, Savelberg HH, Bruin G, Barneveld A.Toe weights are applied to influence the stride characteristics of trotters. The quantitative effect of 88-g toe weights on the stride characteristics of Standardbred trotters was evaluated in a kinematic study using a CODA-3 analysis system. Six trotters were studied at a speed of 11 m/s on a treadmill. Temporal gait variables, joint angles, and the trajectories of the forelimb hoof were calculated. The stride patterns of the individual trotters were assessed by a judge and compared to the CODA-output. Those trotters with poor flexion of the carpal joint during the swing phase or with insuffi...

Seventeen (38%) of these horses had a history of poor performance. An increase of left ventricular shortening fraction was found in 25 horses (56%). Atrial dilatation was seen in 37 horses (82%). Eight horses (18%) had normal atrial dimensions. In nine horses only left atrium and in six horses only right atrium was enlarged. In the other 22 horses both atria were dilated. Correlation was ...
Tidal breathing flow-volume loop analysis as a test of pulmonary function in exercising horses.
American journal of veterinary research    May 1, 1994   Volume 55, Issue 5 589-594
Connally BA, Derksen FJ.The usefulness of tidal breathing flow-volume loops (TBFVL) to evaluate pulmonary function was investigated in 6 Standardbreds during treadmill exercise. Tidal breathing flow-volume loops are a graphic representation of airflow rate vs tidal volume for each individual breath. These TBFVL were obtained from horses exercising at speeds corresponding to 75 and 100% of maximum heart rate. Measurements were recorded in each horse before and after ovalbumin-induced allergic lung disease. Moderate obstructive lung disease, characterized by a significant increase in pulmonary resistance, was observed ...

The Journal of nutrition    December 1, 1993   Volume 123, Issue 12 2152-2157 doi: 10.1093/jn/123.12.2152
Lawrence L, Soderholm LV, Roberts A, Williams J, Hintz H.Four standardbred horses were used in a Latin square design experiment to evaluate the effects of feeding status on metabolic response to exercise. Horses were deprived of food overnight and then fed 0 (control condition), 1, 2 or 3 kg of corn grain approximately 2.5-3 h before exercise. The exercise test consisted of a warm-up phase (heart rate mean = 144 beats/min) followed by 800 m of walking and then a high intensity work bout for 1600 m (heart rate mean = 206 beats/min). All tests were conducted on a high speed equine treadmill on which the horses had been previously conditioned. During e...
Effect of furosemide on physiologic variables in exercising horses.
American journal of veterinary research    December 1, 1993   Volume 54, Issue 12 2104-2109
Harkins JD, Hackett RP, Ducharme NG.Twelve horses (6 Standardbreds and 6 Thoroughbreds) received IM injections of furosemide (250 mg) or physiologic saline solution and performed standard exercise tests, to assess the effects of furosemide and breed on blood gas values, PCV, plasma lactate concentration, and heart rate during exercise. After furosemide administration, arterial and venous blood pH values were significantly (P < 0.05) increased. Partial pressures of O2 and CO2 in arterial blood and of CO2 in venous blood (PaO2, PaCO2, and PVCO2, respectively) were unaffected by furosemide treatment, whereas venous partial press...

Australian veterinary journal    September 1, 1993   Volume 70, Issue 9 336-340 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1993.tb00879.x
Auer DE, Skelton KV, Tay S, Baldock FC.Total plasma carbon dioxide (TCO2) concentrations were measured in Standardbred horses to determine criteria to discriminate between normal horses and horses with excessive TCO2 concentrations on raceday. TCO2 concentrations from stabled horses were distributed normally with a mean of 30.2 mmol/L and a standard deviation of 1.2 (n = 192) while pre-race TCO2 concentrations were not normally distributed. The results indicate that about 50 horses per million are likely to have TCO2 concentrations greater than or equal to 35 mmol/L and that it is extremely unlikely that a normal horse would have a...
Articular fracture of the dorsoproximolateral aspect of the third metatarsal bone in five standardbred racehorses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    September 1, 1993   Volume 203, Issue 5 698-700
Ross MW, Sponseller ML, Gill HE, Moyer W.Articular fracture of the dorsoproximolateral aspect of the third metatarsal bone (MT3) caused an acute onset of lameness in 5 horses; however, 3 of the horses had historical and radiographic or scintigraphic evidence of chronic tarsal and metatarsal disease before fracture. The pathogenesis of dorsoproximolateral fracture of MT3 remains unclear, but the fracture may occur as a result of the formation of abnormal bone in the proximal aspect of MT3. The prognosis for racing in horses with this fracture appears to be guarded.
