Respiratory problems in the racehorse. Racetracks are ideal environments for the promotion of lower respiratory disease. The stabling is close and unclean, the population is nationally and internationally mobile, and the work the racehorse performs is traumatic to the respiratory tract. Upper airway function during maximal exercise in horses with obstructive upper airway lesions. Effect of surgical treatment. Upper airway pressure was measured during maximal exercise in 10 Thoroughbred racehorses with naturally occurring upper airway obstruction. Following a workshop on equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) convened at the Veterinary Medical Forum of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 1988, this survey of EPM in North America was developed. Gas chromatographic mass-specific investigation of dextromoramide (Palfium) metabolism in the horse. Dextromoramide (Palfium) was given by intravenous injection to a Thoroughbred horse at a dosage of 20 mg and urine was collected 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after drug administration. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the urine followed by solvent extraction gave a residue which was back-extracted into 0.1 M sulphuric acid. Muscle buffering capacity and dipeptide content in the thoroughbred horse, greyhound dog and man. 1. Muscle buffering capacity (beta m) and dipeptide content were measured in locomotory muscles of the Thoroughbred horse, Greyhound dog and Man. 2. Beta m and carnosine contents were highest in the horse. Anserine was only found in dog muscle. 3. The higher beta m in horse and dog muscle, compared with man, appears to be predominantly due to higher muscle contents of histidine containing dipeptides in these species.
Further evidence for a silent allele in the transferrin locus of the horse. A silent allele in the transferrin locus (Tf) was observed in a Thoroughbred mare and in five of her offspring from three different matings. Changes in muscle free carnitine and acetylcarnitine with increasing work intensity in the Thoroughbred horse. Treadmill exercise in Thoroughbred horses of 2 min duration and increasing intensity resulted in increased formation and accumulation of acetylcarnitine in the working middle gluteal muscle. At high work intensities a plateau in acetylcarnitine formation was reached corresponding to approximately 70% of the total carnitine pool (approx. 30 mmol.kg-1 dry muscle). Muscle samples from the M. gluteus medius were obtained from six Quarter Horses (QH), six Thoroughbreds (TB), and five Standardbreds (SB) to determine carnosine values and fiber type percentages. 2. Prevalence of gastric lesions in foals without signs of gastric disease: an endoscopic survey. Gastroendoscopic examinations were conducted on 75 Thoroughbred foals aged two to 85 days on seven breeding farms in England and Ireland. The foals showed no signs of gastric disease. There was no significant difference between lesion prevalence in foals in England (16 of 28 foals; 57 per cent) or Ireland (22 of 47 foals; 47 per cent). Heart weight and running ability. The weight of the heart as determined by dissection techniques was compared with liveweight and total muscle weight in different types of horses and dogs as adults and during growth. With increasing body size both within and between species, heart weight forms a lesser proportion of liveweight and of total muscle weight. Heart weight forms a greater proportion of liveweight in Thoroughbreds and Greyhounds (breeds noted for high speed running) than in other less fleet members of their species and Greyhounds have greater heart weights relative to total muscle weight than other dogs.

The effects of exercise intensity and duration on blood gases in thoroughbred horses were studied to characterize the apparent exercise-induced failure in pulmonary gas exchange that occurs in these animals. Breed, age, and gender differences in plasma antithrombin-III activity in clinically normal young horses. Plasma antithrombin-III activity was quantitated in plasma samples obtained from 165 clinically normal horses 3 years old or younger. In the horses as a group, antithrombin-III activity ranged from 63 to 131% of a species-specific reference plasma. Stimuli of thirst in donkeys (Equus asinus). A study of the stimuli of thirst was conducted on six feral donkeys. Donkeys were found to be stimulated to drink by overnight water deprivation, by the diuretic furosemide, and by hypertonic saline infusion, all in the absence of heat stress or work. Donkeys compensate accurately for the fluid deficit caused by overnight water deprivation. After 19 hr without water, they drank 8.8 +/- 2.4 (mean +/- SE) liters within 60 min. Lateral luxation of the superficial digital flexor tendon from the calcaneal tuber occurs in horses as a result of tearing or rupture of the medial retinaculum of the tendon. This report describes the repair of this condition in 2 Thoroughbred race horses, using a surgical technique in which 2 cancellous bone screws were placed in the calcaneus lateral to the tendon, along with suturing the medial retinaculum.
Effect of oral L-carnitine on its concentration in the plasma of yearling Thoroughbred horses. After an oral dose of 10 g of L-carnitine the plasma concentrations of free and total carnitine increased in five yearling thoroughbred horses, reaching a peak two to four hours after administration, but in two horses there was no increase. Equine class II MHC antigens: identification of two sets of epitopes using anti-human monoclonal antibodies. Six mouse and 13 rat monoclonal antibodies (mAb) recognizing HLA-DR, DQ and DP antigens were used for the detection of cell surface class II MHC antigens of equine lymphocytes. GC/MS confirmatory method for etorphine in horse urine. A highly sensitive procedure for GC/MS determination of etorphine in horse urine is described. This assay provides both specificity and reliability and is particularly well suited for the confirmation of radioimmunoassay screening procedures usually used for etorphine. Application of a Hall-effect transducer for measurement of tendon strains in horses. Custom-designed Hall-effect strain sensors (HES) were implanted surgically onto the superficial digital flexor tendons of the forelimbs of 4 adult Thoroughbreds.
