Multiple cutaneous leiomyomas in the perineum of a horse. Multiple cutaneous masses developed in the perineum of a 14-year-old Saddlebred stallion over a period of approximately 5 years. Malignant giant cell tumor of soft parts in a mare. Two subcutaneous masses were removed from the elbow of a mare. Histologically they were composed of islands of polygonal to plump spindlelioid cells with large nuclei, coarsely stippled chromatin, and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Findings were diagnostic for a malignant giant cell tumor of soft parts, a rare tumor with a fair prognosis.

To determine the role of telomeres in cellular ageing in equids, we analysed telomere lengths in peripheral blood derived DNA samples from a panel of donkeys (Equus asinus) ranging from 2 to 30 years of age. Extranodal lymphoblastic lymphoma of suspected B-cell lineage in the gingiva of a racehorse, accompanied by mandibular osteolysis. A mass developed in the mandibular gingiva of a thoroughbred racehorse. When the horse could no longer eat unassisted, it was killed and immediately autopsied. Dermal malignant melanoma in a horse with multifocal pancytokeratin expression. The current report describes a malignant melanoma in the dermis of a 13-year-old bay Thoroughbred mare. Microscopic examination revealed that tumor cells were arranged in cords and packets within an abundant collagenous stroma containing scattered myxomatous foci. Unusual ovarian activity in a mare preceding the development of an ovarian granulosa cell tumour. An 8-year-old mare, with a foal at foot, was inseminated on foal heat with frozen semen, with the resultant pregnancy lost between days 34 and 41. Paranasal meningioma in a horse. Paranasal meningioma was diagnosed in a 5-year-old Appaloosa gelding. [Treatment of equine sarcoids with cisplatin in arachid oil: a useful alternative?]. At the Department of Equine Sciences at Utrecht University a study was performed on the treatment of sarcoids with the cytostatic drug cisplatin. Fourteen horses with 23 sarcoids were treated in the period 2000-2001. Complete regression was seen in 78% of the tumours. No systemic side-effects were encountered. Although treatment was easy to perform, the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle should be followed when using cytostatics.
