Topic:Ultrasound

Ultrasound in horses is a diagnostic imaging technique that utilizes high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the horse's internal structures. It is commonly used in veterinary medicine to evaluate soft tissues, tendons, ligaments, and organs. This non-invasive method allows for real-time visualization of physiological and pathological conditions, aiding in the diagnosis and management of various equine health issues. Ultrasound is particularly valuable for assessing musculoskeletal injuries, reproductive health, and abdominal conditions in horses. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the application, methodology, and advancements in ultrasound technology within equine veterinary practice.

The Veterinary clinics of North America. Equine practice    August 1, 1997   Volume 13, Issue 2 393-413 doi: 10.1016/s0749-0739(17)30247-x
Orsini JA.Foals are good candidates for abdominal surgery because their smaller size permits a more complete abdominal exploration and frequently definitive procedures in many cases. The use of rectal examination is replaced with alternative diagnostic modalities such as barium contrast radiography and ultrasonography. With the advancements in these technologies they can distinguish common gastrointestinal lesions and, in most cases, provide sufficient information to guide surgical intervention. The unique aspects of diagnosis and surgical management of gastrointestinal disorders of the foal are discuss...

[The incidence of multiple ovulations in Dutch warmblood mares].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    May 15, 1997   Volume 122, Issue 10 277-279
Willink DL, Smeenk LA, van Oijen PW, de Kruif A.In the period 1994-1996 1030 oestruses of Dutch Warmblood mares were evaluated on the incidence of multiple ovulations diagnosed by rectal palpation. Ultrasonography was not used. All follicles > 25 mm were noted. The examination was repeated every 48 hours. The incidence of multiple follicle development was 7.3%. In a group of 50 ultrasonographically diagnosed twin-pregnant mares only 14 (28%) had been detected by rectal palpation as a multiple ovulation. This suggests an incidence of multiple ovulations in Dutch Warmblood mares of 7.3 x 1/28 x 100 = 26%. Restrictions of rectal palpation a...
Pulsed wave-Doppler ultrasonographic evaluation of the common carotid artery in the resting horse: physiologic data. Cipone M, Pietra M, Gandini G, Boari A, Guglielmini C, Venturoli M.A pulsed wave-Doppler ultrasonographic evaluation of common carotid arterial blood flow was carried out on 63 healthy Italian Saddlebred horses. Vessel diameter and tracing morphology were evaluated and blood flow parameters (systolic, diastolic and mean velocity, acceleration and deceleration of the systolic wave, carotid pulse volume) were calculated and correlated with class variables (sex, age and body weight). On the basis of the presence of an incisure in the ascending branch of the systolic curve, subjects were divided in two groups: one with a bifid systolic curve and the other with a ...

The oestrous cycle of each mare was followed by teasing, palpation per rectum and transrectal ultrasonography. Follicles were monitored every 24 hours by ultrasonography until ovulation occurred. The mares were either mated naturally or inseminated artificially. In trial 1, 174 mare...
Ultrasonographic examination of the proximal scutum in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    March 1, 1997   Volume 29, Issue 2 136-141 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1997.tb01655.x
Denoix JM, Busoni V, Olalla MJ.Normal and abnormal ultrasonographic images are presented of the proximal scutum (proximal sesamoid bones and palmar ligament) in the horse. Comparison between anatomical sections, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and ultrasound scans enabled the authors to establish the normal ultrasonographic anatomy of the palmar fetlock. Nine cases of proximal scutum injuries were identified ultrasonographically, of which 4 are illustrated. On normal limbs, the facies flexoria of the proximal sesamoid bones appeared as a thin and regular hyperechoic line and the palmar ligament was regularly echogenic. Les...
Biochemical changes in the equine capsule following prostaglandin-induced pregnancy failure.
Molecular reproduction and development    March 1, 1997   Volume 46, Issue 3 286-295 doi: 10.1002/(SICI)1098-2795(199703)46:3<286::AID-MRD7>3.0.CO;2-L
Chu JW, Sharom FJ, Oriol JG, Betteridge KJ, Cleaver BD, Sharp DC.The equine embryonic capsule, an acellular covering that envelops the conceptus during the second and third weeks of pregnancy, is composed of mucin-like glycoproteins. Its structure is consistent with a dual role during early pregnancy: protection of the conceptus, and communication between the embryo and the mother. Loss of sialic acid from the capsular glycoproteins at day 16 correlates with the time of "fixation," or loss of conceptus mobility throughout the uterine horns. This study investigated how the structure of the capsule is linked to the maintenance of pregnancy. Six pregnancies, c...

On another occasion all horses were tested following i.v. administration of xylazine (0.4 mg/kg) and following i.v. administration of lobeline hydrochloride (l.hy.; 0.2 mg/kg) to evaluate the effect of xylazine and l.hy. on different spirometric variables. Ultrasound-b...
[The spontaneous reduction of a twin pregnancy in two mares].
Schweizer Archiv fur Tierheilkunde    January 1, 1997   Volume 139, Issue 2 71-77
Meier HP, Gertsch U, Kohler S.Twin pregnancies are a serious problem in stud medicine as they terminate in most cases in abortion, stillbirth or the delivery of dead or weak and deformed foals. In recent years, the introduction of sonography has greatly improved the management of mares with twin conceptuses, in particular monitoring the phenomenon of spontaneous embryo reduction to a single vesicle. This allows supervision of pregnancy with relatively little expenditure and loss of time. We document the spontaneous reduction to single vesicles of unilateral twin pregnancies in a draught- and a warmblood-mare. In both mares...
