Dysplastic disease of the cerebellum of an adult horse.
Acta neuropathologica    January 1, 1987   Volume 75, Issue 2 209-211 doi: 10.1007/BF00687083
Poss M, Young S.A 4-year-old horse was evaluated at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for rapidly progressing cerebellar disease. Euthanasia was elected and at postmortem examination a proliferative mass encompassing the right side of the cerebellum was discovered. The lesion was characterized by large, convoluted, vascular folia and absence of the core of central white matter. Histologically, there was a diminution or loss of the internal granule cell layer, cavitation of the central white matter, and absence of Purkinje cells. The molecular layer was thickened with myelinated axons ...
Formation of acetylcarnitine in muscle of horse during high intensity exercise.
European journal of applied physiology and occupational physiology    January 1, 1987   Volume 56, Issue 6 639-642 doi: 10.1007/BF00424803
Foster CV, Harris RC.To study the changes in carnitine in muscle with spring exercise, two Thoroughbred horses performed two treadmill exercise tests. Biopsies of the middle gluteal were taken before, after exercise and after 12 min recovery. Resting mean muscle total carnitine content was 29.5 mmol.kg-1 dry muscle (d.m.). Approximately 88% was free carnitine, 7% acetylcarnitine and acylcarnitine was estimated at 5%. Exercise did not affect total carnitine, but resulted in a marked fall in free carnitine and almost equivalent rise in acetylcarnitine. The results are consistent with a role for carnitine in the regu...
[Legal aspects of veterinary examinations of horses at purchase with regard to the new high court decision and prevailing dogma].
Tierarztliche Praxis    January 1, 1987   Volume 15, Issue 3 275-279
Fellmer E.The existing statutory provisions in connection with the seller's liability for defects of a horse are nowadays unsatisfactory. This has led to an increasing number of cases in which veterinarians have been held liable for the purchaser's damages resulting from an incorrect or incomplete veterinary examination at point of sale. Courts have recently imposed extensive duties of care on the veterinary. He has not only to detect and disclose every minute defect of the horse, but has to give a prognosis of the development of the horse's healthiness and its future capability to meet the purchaser's ...
[Neurological examination of the horse].
Tierarztliche Praxis    January 1, 1987   Volume 15, Issue 2 167-179
Kraft W.Neurological examination in equine practice, physiological findings and pathological disturbances are described. Because of the sizes of the horse the neurological examination is more difficult than in small animals. The examination of cerebrospinal fluid is a worthful completion and is able to refer to the etiology of a certain disease. The technique of the puncture of cerebrospinal fluid is described.

Epidemiology of equine herpesvirus 2 (equine cytomegalovirus).
Journal of clinical microbiology    January 1, 1987   Volume 25, Issue 1 13-16 doi: 10.1128/jcm.25.1.13-16.1987
Browning GF, Studdert MJ.The epidemiology of equine herpesvirus 2 was examined by using restriction endonuclease DNA fingerprints to distinguish viruses isolated from two groups of horses. The first group consisted of three yearlings isolated from other horses but in contact with each other for 418 days, whereas the second comprised seven mares and their foals, which were sampled at monthly intervals from parturition until the foals were about 180 days old. There was a complex pattern of transmission, with 15 different viruses isolated from both groups. Four distinguishable viruses were isolated from the three yearlin...
Effect of altrenogest on pregnancy maintenance in unsynchronized equine embryo recipients.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 433-438
Parry-Weeks LC, Holtan DW.Non-surgical embryo recovery attempts were done on Day 7 after ovulation. Embryo recovery rate from mares of varied reproductive histories was 57% (38/67). Non-surgical transfer of these embryos into altrenogest-treated recipient mares that ovulated between 3 days before and 3 days after the donor resulted in a 30-day pregnancy rate of 77% (10/13). Transfer of embryos into altrenogest-treated recipients that ovulated between 4 days before and 6 days after the donor resulted in an overall pregnancy rate of 64% (16/25) at Day 30 of gestation. No recipients that were in oestrus at the start of tr...

Fertility of pasture bred mares in synchronized oestrus.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 39-43
Bristol F.Oestrus was synchronized in 220, 300 and 272 mares in 1983, 1984 and 1985 respectively. Mares were given two injections of 250 micrograms fenprostalene 15 days apart except in 1983 and 1984 when 56 and 53 of the synchronized mares were given 1-10 daily injections of 150 mg progesterone and 10 mg oestradiol-17 beta to delay and synchronize post-partum oestrus. At 2 days after the second PG injection or 7 days after the last progesterone + oestradiol treatment, mares were divided into groups of 15-21, and each group was placed in a separate pasture with a stallion for 7 weeks. Pregnancy rates we...

Equine half sibs with an unbalanced X;15 translocation or trisomy 28.
Cytogenetics and cell genetics    January 1, 1987   Volume 45, Issue 3-4 163-168 doi: 10.1159/000132448
Power MM.Two unrelated chromosome abnormalities were found in equine half sibs. The proposita, Case 1, which was short in stature and infertile, had a de novo unbalanced X;15 translocation involving loss of Xp. Replication studies indicated that the translocated X was preferentially late replicating and that this late replication spread variably into the autosomal segment. Case 2, a half brother of the proposita, was short in stature, had cryptorchidism, and was trisomic for chromosome 28. Cytogenetic analysis of the dam, the sire of Case 1, and two other phenotypically normal half sibs revealed normal...
Epizootic vesicular stomatitis in Colorado, 1982: epidemiologic studies along the northern Colorado front range.
The American journal of tropical medicine and hygiene    January 1, 1987   Volume 36, Issue 1 183-188 doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.1987.36.183
Webb PA, Monath TP, Reif JS, Smith GC, Kemp GE, Lazuick JS, Walton TE.Epidemiologic evaluations were made of farm personnel on vesicular stomatitis-affected premises along the front range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado during the 1982 epizootic. A similar antibody prevalence was noted to that of veterinarians and research and regulatory personnel who were involved with the same epizootic. Risk of infection resulted from intimate physical contact with infected horses or cows. Incidence and infection rates in horses were 45%; rates in cows were much lower, only 5%. Some epidemiologic clues were gained by a detailed study of an equine ranch. The pasture was inc...
Effect of uterine inflammation and ultrasonically-detected uterine pathology on fertility in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 445-454
Adams GP, Kastelic JP, Bergfelt DR, Ginther OJ.The incidence of intrauterine fluid collections during dioestrus (12/43, 28%) and uterine cysts throughout the oestrous cycle (11/73, 15%) found in this study indicates that these ultrasonically detectable abnormalities are prevalent in mares. The hypothesis that uterine cysts do not affect pregnancy was not supported. Intrauterine fluid collections at dioestrus represented the presence of an inflammatory process as indicated by a high biopsy score, reduced progesterone concentrations, and a shorter interovulatory interval. Mares with fluid collections at dioestrus had a lower pregnancy rate a...
Treatment of chronic back pain in horses. Stimulation of acupuncture points with a low powered infrared laser.
Veterinary surgery : VS    January 1, 1987   Volume 16, Issue 1 106-110 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1987.tb00919.x
Martin BB, Klide AM.Fourteen horses that could not perform at their expected standards due to chronic back pain of 4 to 48 months duration, and had not obtained lasting improvement from other forms of therapy, were treated by stimulating nine acupuncture points using a low powered infrared laser (300 microW, 904 nm). The treatments were performed weekly, and consisted of stimulating each point for 2 minutes with a pulse frequency of 360 pulses per second. After completion of a mean of 11 treatments, clinical signs of back pain were alleviated in 10 of the 14 horses, there was no change in three, and one was lost ...
Antepartum evaluations of the equine fetus.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 565-573
Adams-Brendemuehl C, Pipers FS.Measurements were made by real-time ultrasonography in 14 healthy mares to assess fetal growth and estimate newborn foal weights. Intrauterine fluid volumes were estimated and the placenta was measured and observed for maturational changes. The onset and incidence of echogenic particles in the allantoic fluid were recorded. In the second approach, baseline fetal heart rate, physiological rate variations and number, amplitude and duration of recorded accelerations were measured. Estimates of birth weights were within +/- 3.49 kg. Allantoic fluid was evident in all sonographic planes within the ...
Dynamics of the acute uterine response to infection, endotoxin infusion and physical manipulation of the reproductive tract in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 317-325
Williamson P, Munyua S, Martin R, Penhale WJ.The uterine responses after the infusion of saline (PBS), a bacterial suspension, or lipopolysaccharide derived from Escherichia coli, and after stimulation of the reproductive tract were compared. All infusions provoked a response involving both serum proteins and leucocytes. Protein levels peaked within a few hours of infusion, whereas leucocyte concentration peaked later at around 6 h. Bacterial recovery from the uterus followed a similar pattern, with recovery falling dramatically by 12 h. In mares known to be susceptible to infection large numbers of bacteria were again recovered after 24...
Consequence of excess iodine supply in a Thoroughbred stud in southern Brazil.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 529-533
Silva CA, Merkt H, Bergamo PN, Barros SS, Barros CS, Santos MN, Hoppen HO, Heidemann P, Meyer H.Excessive iodine supply of at least 700 mg inorganic iodine in foals and of more than 350 mg iodine in pregnant and lactating mares cause a high incidence of goitres in the newborn and disorders in the long leg bones of foals. Elevated phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase content in the blood may indicate a severe disturbance in the bone metabolism. Of 39 pregnant mares 17 aborted and some of the mares also showed goitres. After withdrawal of the iodine supply normalization took place. Foals born more than 6 weeks later showed normal conditions. The goitres in the mares and the high blood level...
PGF-2 alpha release, progesterone secretion and conceptus growth associated with successful and unsuccessful transcervical embryo transfer and reinsertion in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 419-427
Sirois J, Betteridge KJ, Goff AK.The outcome of 23 collections and reinsertions of conceptuses on Days 10.5-13.5, 4 transfers of Day-10.5, and 13 transfers of Day-6.5 embryos (ovulation = Day 0) was monitored in 30 mares. Blood samples were taken before and after each procedure to measure plasma 15-keto-13,14-dihydroprostaglandin F-2 alpha (PGFM), and then daily for progesterone determinations. Mares were also subjected to daily teasing for detection of oestrus, and to uterine ultrasonography for tracing the development of the conceptus. After the reinsertions, 12/23 conceptuses were detectable immediately after the procedure...
Role of anaerobic bacteria in equine endometritis.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 343-351
Ricketts SW, Mackintosh ME.This study, performed over 3 breeding seasons, surveyed anaerobic and aerobic bacterial isolates from 362 clitoral and endometrial swabs and uterine washes from 263 Thoroughbred maiden, foaling, foal heat and barren mares, and from 113 urethral, urethral fossa, preputial and pre-ejaculatory fluid swabs from 29 Thoroughbred stallions. The significance of isolates was determined by their association with acute endometritis, as determined by concurrent endometrial smear results and by consideration of age and reproductive status before and after the survey. The results suggest that the horse uter...
[Diagnosis of liver diseases in dogs, cats and horses].
Tierarztliche Praxis    January 1, 1987   Volume 15, Issue 4 343-347
Kraft W.Clinical symptoms of hepatopathies are not specific and must be verified by further investigation. Laboratory diagnosis is a very useful method to decide if liver disease is present or not. In individual cases laboratory methods can give hints as to the aetiology of the illness. If necessary, biopsy, angiography or/and cholecystography can be carried out for further clarification of the diagnosis.
Ventilatory and blood gas dynamics at onset and offset of exercise in the pony.
Journal of applied physiology (Bethesda, Md. : 1985)    January 1, 1987   Volume 62, Issue 1 141-148 doi: 10.1152/jappl.1987.62.1.141
Powers SK, Beadle RE, Thompson D, Lawler J.The purpose of these experiments was to examine the temporal pattern of arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) to assess the relationship between alveolar ventilation (VA) and CO2 return to the lung at the onset and offset of submaximal treadmill exercise. Five healthy ponies exercised for 8 min at two work rates: 50 m/min 6% grade and 70 m/min 12% grade. PaCO2 decreased (P less than 0.05) below resting values within 1 min after commencement of exercise at both work rates and reached a nadir at 90 s. PaCO2 decreased maximally by 2.5 and 3.5 Torr at the low and moderate rate, respectively. Aft...
Evaluation and management of respiratory disease in the horse.
Tierarztliche Praxis. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 2 21-23
Johnston AM.Respiratory disease is one of the commonest medical reasons for referring a horse to the Royal Veterinary College, with coughing the main presenting sign. Investigation requires the taking of a detailed history, clinical examination, the use of appropriate diagnostic aids and noting response to medication and management changes. On arrival the horse is stabled in a minimal dust environment, remaining there until discharge. The use of a dust-free box frequently produces a favourable response without the use of medication which in itself is diagnostic. The problem of a horse which is asymptomati...

[Diagnosis and therapy of air sac mycoses in the horse].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 2 10-14
Grabner A.Mycosis of the guttural pouches is a sporadic disease characterized by diphtheroid-necrotizing inflammation, and is caused by different fungal species, mainly by Aspergillus spp., Penicillium spp. and Candida spp. Highest incidence is during summer in stable horses. Proper diagnosis often requires--besides detection by mycological techniques--histological examination of tissue obtained by bioptic endoscopy. Prognosis is hopeless in late stages of the infection because of the erosion of the carotid artery or accompanied by the fatal complications of a not reparable cranial nerve damage also in ...

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    December 15, 1986   Volume 189, Issue 12 1600-1603
Markel MD, Wheat JD, Jang SS.Nine Thoroughbred racehorses were admitted with cellulitis (of one or more limbs) associated with coagulase-positive staphylococci. The right hindlimb was affected in 4 horses, the right forelimb in 2, the left hindlimb in 1, and both hindlimbs in 2. Typical abnormalities included high values for rectal temperature (9 horses) and heart rate (5 horses), hyperfibrinogenemia (7 horses), leukocytosis (7 horses), and neutrophilia (6 horses). The staphylococcal isolants were speciated in 3 horses and classified as Staphylococcus aureus. Complications included skin loss (5 horses), laminitis of the a...
Surgical management of chronic laminitis in horses: 13 cases (1983-1985).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    December 15, 1986   Volume 189, Issue 12 1604-1606
Allen D, White NA, Foerner JF, Gordon BJ.Thirteen horses with chronic refractory laminitis were evaluated and treated. In each horse, deep digital flexor tenotomy was performed on all affected limbs at the level of the midpastern. Five horses returned to limited athletic endeavors, 6 horses improved and were comfortable on pasture, 1 horse improved clinically, but was euthanatized for economic reasons, and 1 horse improved, but deteriorated 9 months after surgery and was euthanatized. Results of this study indicated that deep digital flexor tenotomy at the level of the midpastern can be used effectively as a salvage procedure in hors...
[Avulsion fracture of the tendon of origin of the long extensor muscle of the toe in a horse and a cat].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    December 15, 1986   Volume 111, Issue 24 1225-1228
Voorhout G, Klein WR, Meutstege FJ.An avulsion fracture of the tendon of origin of the extensor digitorum longus muscle is reported in a horse and a cat. This avulsion fracture was due to injury in both animals. There was a striking similarity of radiographic findings in these animals, with involvement of the lateral trochlear ridge and lateral condyle of the femur. The horse was slaughtered because of a poor prognosis as a riding-horse. Fixation of the avulsed fragment with two Kirschner wires resulted in complete recovery in the cat.
