Multiple hemangiosarcomas in the tarsal synovial sheath of a horse. A 2-year-old Standardbred colt with a history of intermittent lameness of the left hindlimb had hemangiosarcomatous involvement of the tarsal synovial sheath. Tibiotarsal and proximal intertarsal synovial sacs were visibly distended and there was pronounced distension of the tarsal synovial sheath. A large, firm mass was palpable in the sheath at about the level of the tuber calcis. Three circumscribed sessile growths were surgically excised from the sheath. The fluorescent antibody technique in the diagnosis of equine rhinopneumonitis virus abortion. Using two known positive equine viral rhinopneumonitis (EVR) sera, conjugates were prepared with fluorescein isothiocyanate and tested for specificity using EVR infected tissue culture cells. The conjugate was then applied to selected tissues from 32 aborted fetuses and foals submitted during a natural outbreak of EVR. Antigen was detected in various tissues by immunofluorescence in 20 cases (62.5%). The autoxidation of horse hemoglobin: the effect of glutathione. The reduced glutathione in the erythrocyte was found to inhibit the autoxidation of purified horse hemoglobin. It was observed that much higher concentrations of oxidized glutathione also stabilize hemoglobin. The stabilization by oxidized glutathione most likely involves the formation of a mixed disulfide with the reactive β-93 sulfhydryl groups on the hemoglobin. A similar effect is also observed with N-ethyl- maleimide and HgCl2 which also react with the sulfhydryl groups.
