The isolation and identification of Potchefstroom virus: a new member of the equine encephalosis group of orbiviruses. Virus was isolated from the blood of horses (n = 5) showing fever and jaundice and was identified as equine encephalosis virus. In cross neutralisation tests, the isolates were shown to belong to a new serotype related to Gamil, one of the 6 known serotypes of equine encephalosis virus. The name Potchefstroom has been proposed for this new serotype.

In vitro interaction between oviduct epithelial and equine sperm. Coculture of stallion sperm with monolayers of equine oviductal epithelial cells (OEC) was evaluated. Monolayers were obtained from frozen-thawed OEC. Live sperm attached to the OEC in vitro, whereas sperm killed by heat treatment or glutaraldehyde fixation did not. Furosemide magnifies the exercise-induced elevation of plasma vasopressin concentration in horses. Kanamycin concentrations in synovial fluid after intramuscular administration in the horse. Six adult ponies were injected in the same intramuscular site with kanamycin sulphate (10 mg/kg). Two hours later, arthrocenteses of the right metacarpophalangeal, radio-carpal, intercarpal, tibio-tarsal and metatarsophalangeal joints were performed within 3 minutes. Diagnosis and prediction of cervical vertebral malformation in thoroughbred foals based on semi-quantitative radiographic indicators. Over a period of 5 years on a central Kentucky Thoroughbred stud farm 132 foals were evaluated for the presence of cervical vertebral malformation (CVM). Twenty-four hour gastric pH monitoring and blood gastrin concentrations in fasted ponies. Gastric pH varied widely among eight fasted ponies, of which seven exhibited discrete episodes of spontaneous alkalinisation (SA). Radiographic evaluation of ossification of the collateral cartilages of the third phalanx in Finnhorses. Of 462 Finnhorses (age 1-20 years) evaluated and graded (scale 0-5) radiographically for ossification of the collateral cartilages of the 3rd phalanx of the front feet, 22.9% were totally free from sidebones (Grade 0), and 49.1% had minimal or mild ossification (Grade 1 or 2) at the base of 1 or more of the cartilages. Effects of neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser irradiation on equine endometrium were evaluated in vitro and in six mares with endometrial cysts. Purification and characterization of equine complement factor C3. A rapid method for purifying equine C3 which yields milligram quantities of pure C3 is described. Protein from equine plasma was selectively precipitated with polyethylene glycol, and the C3 was purified by anionic and cationic exchange HPLC. The yield from this procedure was 12%. Diffuse cerebral encephalopathy associated with hydrocephalus and cholesterinic granulomas in a horse. Cholesterinic granulomas, commonly found at necropsy in aged horses, may cause neurologic signs by obstructing the interventricular foramina, resulting in hydrocephalus. Diffuse cerebral disease in horses may not always result in rapid progression of clinical signs. Intermittency of neurologic signs may be associated with intermittent increases in CSF pressure.
