Pharmacokinetic profile of sulphamonomethoxine-trimethoprim in horses after intravenous, intramuscular and oral administration. The pharmacokinetic profile of a sulphamonomethoxine-trimethoprim (SMM-TMP) combination was investigated in five horses. The combination was administered intravenously, intramuscularly and orally at a constant dose of 20 mg SMM plus 4 mg TMP kg-1 bodyweight. Characterisation of equine influenza isolates from the 1987 epizootic in India by nucleotide sequencing of the HA1 gene. Two A/Equi-2 (H3N8) isolates were obtained during the 1987 Indian equine influenza epizootic. The sequence of the Ludhiana/87 HA1 gene revealed that this isolate was very similar to recent European and North American isolates of equine influenza. Effect of surgical removal of endometrial cups on concentrations of chorionic gonadotrophin and subsequent fertility in the mare. Surgical treatment of intramural esophageal inclusion cysts in three horses. Three horses were diagnosed as having esophageal inclusion cysts. Clinical signs included dysphagia, swelling of the cervical esophagus, and salivation. Surgical removal of the cyst was attempted in two horses. Muscle characteristics in standardbreds of different ages and sexes. Biopsy samples were taken from the middle gluteal muscle in 107 health Standardbred horses. Clinical evaluation of an infusion of xylazine, guaifenesin and ketamine for maintenance of anaesthesia in horses. General anaesthesia was maintained in 40 horses by the continuous intravenous infusion of a mixture of 500 ml 10% guaifenesin solution, 1 g ketamine and 500 mg xylazine. An immunohistological study of MHC class II expression and T lymphocytes in the endometrium of the mare. The distribution of T lymphocytes and of cells bearing MHC Class II antigens in the endometrium of the mare was studied using an avidin-biotin-peroxidase staining method. The incidence and severity of intercarpal ligament damage in the equine carpus. The arthroscopic findings in 104 intercarpal joints in 76 horses were reviewed to determine the incidence and severity of changes in the medial intercarpal ligament. Damage to the intercarpal ligament was observed in 43 joints in 35 horses, ranging from mild fraying of the edges of the ligament to complete disruption of all fibres. Evaluation of ivermectin at an elevated dose against encysted equine cyathostome larvae. The efficacy of a high dose of ivermectin (1.0 mg per kg Eqvalan liquid drench) on encysted cyathostomes was tested in a controlled study using 12 adult ponies with naturally acquired cyathostome infections. Recognition of Pneumocystis carinii in foals with respiratory distress. Five 3-month-old foals presenting with fever and respiratory disease were found to have pulmonary abscesses with patchy to diffuse alveolar and interstitial pneumonia on post-mortem examination. Horse-related fatalities in the Province of Alberta, 1975-1990. People use horses for work and recreational purposes on farms and ranches in Alberta, Canada. This retrospective descriptive review examines the records of all those people killed while around horses between 1975 and 1990. The intent is to ascertain features common to these injuries and to suggest prevention strategies. Use of ventral cervical stabilization for treatment of a suspected articular facet fracture in a horse. A 3-year-old Thoroughbred filly examined because of poor performance after a fall was found to be ataxic. Radiography revealed a linear defect in the right dorsal cranial articular facet of the fifth cervical vertebra. The defect was thought to be a fracture or a developmental defect. Arthrodesis and stabilization were achieved by ventral implantation of a Bagby basket in the articulation between the fourth and fifth cervical vertebrae. ADP induces desensitisation of equine platelet aggregation responses: studies using ADP beta S, a stable analogue of ADP. Pre-incubation of equine platelets in platelet-rich plasma with adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP) induced a reduction in aggregation responsiveness to subsequent additions of ADP.
